Dr Alex Lascu (she/they) is a skill acquisition amateur (lover of) and currently researches at the University of Canberra. Her passion for talent development and community sport is contagious, and she enjoys existing in the gap between research and practice in the hopes of bringing these two worlds together. Yleia (they/them) has a dual Bachelors in Sport Science and Psychology and completed their Honours project in mental fatigue in 2021. They are currently working on getting their thesis published and easing their way back into academia after a year of working in sports administration.

    Tongue Twisters: Exploring the Etymology of Existing Terminology

    We dare you to say the title of this episode three times fast. (Go on, you know you want to.) If the title wasn't enough of a hint, it's about to get very word-nerdy over here. In this episode, we break down blurry terminology with the help of Johnston and colleagues' (2023) paper, Language games and blurry terminology: Can clarity enhance athlete development? But don't be fooled by us geeking out over words! We do somehow transition from the dictionary to the field as we dissect semantics and etymology while discussing the importance of meaning and intention, not just as academics, but as coaches as well.

    Offroad Cycling

    We're back with the March episode of Paper by Paper! In this episode, we attempt to unpack expertise, which we think is best summarised by the following exchange- Alex: What does expertise mean to you? Yleia: Do I look at it as a player, a coach, or an academic? Turns out, we got through all of those with some help from Chapter 4 (written by M.R. Wilson, J. Causer, & J. Vickers) and Chapter 25 (written by I. Renshaw & A. Gorman) of the Routledge Handbook of Sport Expertise edited by J. Baker & D. Farrow (2015, 1st Ed). With a healthy dose of segues (bonus points if you can tell us what our running tally is for spin-off podcast ideas), TV show references, and memes, we manage to talk our way around expertise and settle on a few nuggets of wisdom. (Maybe. I mean, we've never claimed to be the experts on anything here.)

    The Gorilla in the Room

    Welcome back folks! We have learned our lesson, and this episode was recorded from the safety of our little WFH setups. Never recording outdoors ever again, the vibes are not worth it. In this episode, we discuss the concept of inattentional blindness. In this episode, we discuss observational learning and nonlinear pedagogy, touching on some textbook examples from Chapter 5 of the 'Nonlinear Pedagogy in Skill Acquisition' textbook by Chow et al.     Great Expectations

    It was such a pleasure to host our first guest on the podcast, welcome Darcey Johnson! Now I (Alex) must admit that this started as a selfish invite to fulfil a coaching dream of mine - to hear my coaching philosophy as described by an athlete I've coached.     Rules vs Principles

    It's the holiday gift that you've all been waiting for: another episode of 'Paper by Paper: A Sports Research Playbook'! In this episode, we discuss the difference (and relationship) between rules and principles with guidance from McKay and colleagues' (2021) paper "An ecological insight into the design and integration of attacking principles of play in professional rugby union: a case example".     The Ball Kids

    Welcome to Episode 1 of the Paper by Paper podcast! In this episode, we set the tone for the series by exploring sport science as an art of inquiry, as described by Woods and colleagues (2022) in their paper “Thinking through making and doing.”  We explore our 'science as biography' and how we've come to see the world, and weave the story of the paper through our own experiences with sport and science. We discuss the analogy of researchers as spectators in a stadium, and applied practitioners as 'the ball kids', somewhere between the team on the ground competing and the stands, contributing in occasionally helpful ways without interfering.  Host Note from Yleia re their use of notational analysis: credit to my supervisors (Dr Jocelyn Mara & Dr Kristy Martin) for recognising the need to develop notational analysis that could capture the context of technical skills to consider how mental fatigue influences skill execution
