    Larry Bird vs. Chuck Person: The TRASH TALKING Nobody Remembers 📼 1991 Playoffs Tapes

    Another entry from the CLNS archive vault — April 26, 1991, Boston Garden. Game 1 of the Celtics–Pacers first-round series, and the night a Larry Bird–Chuck Person rivalry that started in Person's rookie year boiled over on live TV. Bird was coming off a month of rest for his back. He shot 6-for-20 and still finished with a triple-double: 21 points, 12 rebounds, 12 assists and 3 steals in Boston's 127–120 win. Reggie Lewis scored 28, Kevin McHale added 25 in 27 minutes, and Robert Parish went 10-for-12. Chuck Person had 23 points, 8 rebounds and 7 assists. And in the middle of it, a Bird–Person staredown turned into a McHale shove, a technical foul, and a coach who was not happy about it.     Larry Bird Plays All 48 Mins of Game 7 vs Pistons | The 1987 Tapes

    Another entry from the CLNS archive vault — May 30, 1987, Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals, Pistons at Celtics in a sweltering Boston Garden. Four days after Larry Bird's steal saved Game 5, Detroit won Game 6 and came back to Boston one win from the Finals. Robert Parish played 42 minutes on a sprained ankle. K.C. Jones coached two days after his mother's funeral. Joe Dumars scored 35 on 21 shots. And late in the third quarter, Adrian Dantley and Vinnie Johnson collided head-on — Dantley left on a stretcher. Bird played all 48 minutes: 37 points, 9 rebounds, 9 assists, 10-for-10 from the line. Celtics 117, Pistons 114.     Why Larry Bird Shot Better With Goggles He Hated | The 1988 Tapes 📼

    Another entry from the CLNS archive vault — March 15, 1988, Market Square Arena, and Larry Bird is playing with a fractured orbital bone and a pair of goggles he couldn't stand. Nine days earlier, a Dell Curry elbow broke the bone under Bird's left eye. He finished that game seeing two rims. Three nights later he showed up in goggles and scored 36 on the Spurs. This is the fourth and final goggles game — 34 points, 12-of-22, zero fouls, against a Pacers team with a 22-year-old rookie named Reggie Miller who set a franchise rookie 3-point record that night. Bird played four games in the goggles and shot 55% from the floor. In his first game without them, he went 8-for-19 while Michael Jordan scored 50.     Jordan vs. Bird: 1988 Duel No One Remembers | The 1988 Tapes 📼

    Another entry from the CLNS archive vault — January 12, 1988, Chicago Stadium, and the Bird-Jordan duel almost nobody brings up. Maybe bc it wasn’t in the playoffs? Maybe bc time just skipped over it. Either way, CLNS The Tapes series is dustin off the vhs and breaking this one down..  Larry Bird went for 38 points, 9 rebounds and 8 assists in 44 minutes. Michael Jordan answered with 42 on 19-of-35. Both men had exactly 10 points at halftime. Then they combined for 60 after the break. But the number nobody talks about is zero. With 23 seconds left, the Chicago Stadium PA announcer called Michael Jordan for his sixth personal foul and sent him to the bench. The foul belonged to Charles Oakley. Jordan finished the night with ZERO personal fouls and ZERO turnovers in 43 minutes — and re-entered the game with two seconds on the clock. Also on this tape: Kevin McHale's 10,000th career point, Danny Ainge extending his three-point streak record on a 1-for-5 night, Robert Parish going 18 and 16, a rookie Reggie Lewis, Fred Roberts wearing Cedric Maxwell's number 31, and Ric Flair and Dusty Rhodes sitting courtside in fur coats. Boston won 104-97. Twenty-five days later both teams were back in this same building for All-Star Weekend.
