#183 - Leveraging Your Personal Story - Joel Staley

Today I sat down with Joel Staley, Owner of Total Reset Coaching. He helps business owners, executives, and leaders uncover hidden gaps in their energy, focus, and performance so they can lead their teams, families, and lives at the highest level. Over the years, he’s worked with over 2,000 high-performing men who are already successful on paper, but still feel drained, distracted, or stuck in routines that quietly limit their influence, stamina, and results. His clients don’t just improve their health and fitness, they unlock a new version of themselves: sharper, more disciplined, more commanding, and more capable of handling the pressures of high performance.  Joel is a pro-physique competitor, author, podcaster, and business owner, and has personally faced challenges that would test anyone’s energy and focus, including surviving late-stage cancer, while still raising a family and running a successful business. Because of this, he coaches from experience, not theory, and knows what it takes to optimize every area of life under real-world pressure. His approach combines evidence-based routines, mental performance strategies, and subtle identity shifts that create lasting change without burnout, gimmicks, or extreme measures. He has seen firsthand how a small set of adjustments, guided by a fresh perspective, can create massive breakthroughs in energy, focus, and leadership. #178 - The Hybrid Athlete Blueprint - Cody Miller

In this episode, I sit down with the Strength Coach and Founder of Hoopie Hybrid, Cody Miller.  Cody and I met in 2010, when we were both working at Robert Morris University and have been friends ever since.   Cody spent over 10 years as a collegiate strength and conditioning coach before transitioning to tactical strength and conditioning 3 years ago. He runs and lifts (the kids call this “hybrid”) and is training for a 100-mile race in February. He cofounded Hoopie Hybrid with his beautiful wife, Cayt. It launched in January 2024 and comprises online, hybrid training groups and programs. Cody and Cayt enjoy hanging out with their two pitbull mutts, Millie and Ollie, and enjoy going to the beach every spare moment they can. We discuss: Cody's career trajectory from college strength and conditioning to the U.S military.  Using your athletic pursuits to fuel your career.  True effort comes from finding the extremes in your pursuits.  Chaos, heart rate and zone training.  An argument for zone 2 maxing.  An argument against zone 2.  Why must you practice what you coach?  Being fit enough to push aerobic capacity.  Using training to improve mental resilience.  Creating wins and handling losses. Approaching an exercise modality where mechanical failure does not exist.  The concept of durability and toughness.  Eye-opening experiences in training tactical populations.  A common person who can do uncommon things.  Running won't affect gains… If you suck at both.  Seasons of life and what's to come.  Path dependency.  The Biggest lesson for a young Cody.  Greatest achievement as a coach.  Find Cody: Website - hoopiehybrid.com Instagram - @hoopiehybrid @cody_hoopiehybrid @cayt_hoopiehybrid __________ Paul's singular goal is to raise the bar for coaching. #175 - Building Humans Who Are Harder To Break - Tomasz Deren

Today I sat down with Tomasz Deren, who is a military strength and conditioning specialist, hybrid athlete coach, and ultra-endurance athlete with nearly two decades of experience building resilient, high-performing humans. He holds a Master’s degree in Physiology, is an Exercise Physiologist, and has spent over a decade working within the Canadian military, coaching everyone from everyday service members to elite tactical athletes. He’s also a two-time finisher of 100-mile ultramarathons, a former gym owner, and a lifelong strength athlete who believes performance should never come at the expense of durability, leadership, or family. Tomasz is the founder of The Warrior Collective and co-host of The Warrior Collective Podcast, a training philosophy and community built for those who lift heavy, run far, and refuse to separate strength, endurance, and aesthetics. His approach is battle-tested and science-backed—no gimmicks, no fear-mongering, and no random intensity. Whether working with soldiers, busy professionals, or competitive hybrid athletes, Tomasz focuses on building people who are harder to break, capable under fatigue, and disciplined in both training and life. At the core of his work is a simple belief: real fitness should make you more useful, more resilient, and better equipped to lead—on the battlefield, in the gym, and at home.
