What we carry when we flee

Maria, a 25-year-old Ukrainian Muslim woman, was forced to leave her home country and seek safety in Germany following the 2022 Russian-Ukraine war. In this interview, she shares her lived experiences over the course of seven months, from her initial departure to finally settling into her own apartment with her cat, Muslima. Amid significant adversity, Maria faced many of the questions common to young adults: how to find a home, build a new life, stay connected to family, and be independent. She reflects on navigating an unfamiliar culture and her identity as a young adult, while holding onto hope, her faith, and the responsibility of caring for those she loves—and carrying forward life-changing lessons.

Latasian speaks diaspora | China, Korea and Puerto Rico

Latasian! Korean, Chinese and Puerto Rican cultures and experiences collide in one interesting conversation. Today I have the pleasure to share a very deep conversation with two of my close friends, Hayoung Oh and Terence Lo. Both of them have insightful thoughts and opinions on what it means to be second generation migrant from Korea and China, and how that shapes mentality and life perspective. We talked about everything from how we define diaspora to how our parents named us, family responsibility, colonization, globalization, islander mentality and how we feel about the languages we speak. I won the VISA lottery | Ukraine

This is the first episode of Diaspora Redefined! During this episode Olga Bronetska, from Ukraine, shares how she won the VISA lottery. A friend told her that the reason she had never won anything in her life previous to that day was because she "saved all her luck for that one moment". During the conversation, Olga shared details about her life in Ukraine after the collapse of the Soviet Union in the early 1900's, the difficulties experiences back home and her journey coming to the United States and making America her home. After more than a decade living in the United States, Olga celebrates having her family with her and contributes back to the community while working in refugee resettlement for Ukrainian refugees in Southeast Michigan.
