Living Our Values: Connected on Purpose Speaker: Rev. Dr. Ho-Ming J. Tsui Scripture: John 17:20-23 What does the world see when it looks at us? What creates this disunity? The problem is what sin does with our differences. I. We SEE through the lens of grace Shared experience creates unity. II. We SPEAK the language of love Love is willing to be known, and love is willing to know: • Choosing vulnerability over strength • Choosing curiosity over assumption III. We SHAPE what’s next, together Wisdom and imagination belong at the same table

Living Our Values: Compelled by Love Speaker: Rev. Dr. Shu-Ling Lee Scripture: 2 Corinthians 5:14-21 (NIV) Introduction – Values Review • Rooted in Grace • Here for the City • Commissioned to the Next • Compelled by Love ----- I. What "Compels" You? (2 Corinthians 5:14) • Defining the Word, “Compel” • Biblical Definitions: -- Anagkazo (ἀναγκάζω): Morally urged into action, deeply persuaded not by physical coercion.(Luke 14:23) -- Synecho (συνέχω): Held together, gripped, or hemmed in by love. (2 Corinthians 5:14) • How do we know what KIND of love should compel us? By the truth of God’s word! II. The Foundation: Christ and the Truth of God’s Word (2 Timothy 3:16-17) • We should be convicted by the Truth of God’s word embodied fully in Christ. (John 1:14) • Truth always needs to be accompanied by a posture of love. We need to hold both together! III. The Ministry of Reconciliation (2 Corinthians 5:15–20) • If we are compelled by Christ’s love, we have a Transformed identity as a new creation with a mission as Christ's ambassador. (2 Cor 5:15-17) -- Therefore, we have become messengers of reconciliation! (2 Cor 5:18-19) Pastor Rick Warren’s Quote: o Practical Discernment (1 Peter 3:15): Truth-Telling in a Christlike way should always seek to be accompanied by gentleness and respect. o Speaking Truth in Love (Proverbs 12:18): _Ask "For whose benefit am I speaking?"_ ----- Conclusion • Will RHCCC be known as a church community that is “Compelled by Love”? • Reflect on this week: _What are you really compelled by?_

Living Our Values: Commissioned to the next Speaker: Rev. Dr. Kelly J. Tam Scripture: 2 Timothy 2:1-7 Are we simply moving, or are we discerning what God is calling to us next? WHO WHAT WHEN WHERE…is God leading us next? You then, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. 2 And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others. 3 Join with me in suffering, like a good soldier of Christ Jesus. 4 No one serving as a soldier gets entangled in civilian affairs, but rather tries to please his commanding officer. 5 Similarly, anyone who competes as an athlete does not receive the victor’s crown except by competing according to the rules. 6 The hardworking farmer should be the first to receive a share of the crops. 7 Reflect on what I am saying, for the Lord will give you insight into all this. —2 Timothy 2:1–7 I. We are shaped by what we have received. (2 Timothy 2:1) II. We grow what has been entrusted. (2 Timothy 2:2) III. We pass on what we have been formed to live out. (2 Timothy 2:3–7)

E — Engage the City. E — Exhort the City with Hope. I. S — See the City as God Sees It When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. —Matthew 9:36 II. E — Engage the City After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them two by two ahead of him to every town and place where he was about to go. —Luke 10:1 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers. —Galatians 6:10 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. —Matthew 5:16 III. E — Exhort the City with Hope How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? —Romans 10:14 We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God. —2 Corinthians 5:20 We see the city (as lens of Jesus) We engage the city (good needs by hand) We exhort the city (words and life)

Courageous Yes & The Grace of Community

Courageous Yes & The Grace of Community Speaker: Rev. Susie Choi Scripture: Luke 1: 26-56 The Christian needs another Christian who speaks God’s Word to them. They needs them again and again when they becomes uncertain and discouraged… The Christ in their own heart is weaker than the Christ we encounter in one another, when our own hearts are uncertain, another can remind us of what is sure —Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Life Together (adapted for inclusive language I. Encounter: God’s Invitation - Unexpected divine encounter & invitation - Mary’s “Yes” is not devoid of questions, uncertainty, and fear - Courage is not the absence of fear or questions - Faith can mean saying “yes” while still wondering, “How can this be?” - Sometimes endings make room for new beginnings II. Community: God’s Provision - Mary goes to Elizabeth - Kin not only by blood but united by unmistakable work of God - God’s provision of community in the midst of isolation - Community can become relational well and sanctuary - A facet of God’s grace made tangible in the presence of another III. Encouragement: The Gift of Blessing - Elizabeth recognizes God’s work in Mary - To bless someone is to: — Recognize & Discern God’s work in them — Name what is seen (physically and spiritually) — Celebrate God’s grace in them - Who has helped you see what God is doing in you? - Whose courageous “yes” might God be inviting you to bless? IV. Song: When hope finds it’s voice - Mary’s hope finds its voice in community - Her personal encounter becomes a vision of God’s redeeming work in the world - Mary’s song is personal but it is not private - She does not sing in isolation
