I Was Passed Over for a Promotion: How to Handle Rejection Without Questioning Your Self-Worth

Send us Fan Mail Being passed over for a promotion hurts. Even when you know your worth. Even when you're confident. Even when you spend your days reminding other women to trust themselves, take up space, and stop waiting for permission. I know because I was passed over for a promotion, and it knocked the wind out of me. I had prepared for the interview. I had years of experience with the agency. I knew I was capable of doing the job. And when I heard, “We went with someone else,” my ego wasn't the only thing that got bruised. For a few hours, I let rejection get very loud. My inner mean girl showed up with receipts, questioning my competence, my ambition, and whether I had been foolish to believe I was actually good enough. But underneath the disappointment was something even harder to admit: I was angry with myself because I realized I had started waiting to be chosen again. I had put parts of my life and business on pause while waiting to see whether someone else would give me the opportunity I wanted. And that realization became the beginning of me coming back to myself. In this episode of The Main Character Experience, I'm getting real about what it looks like to experience rejection when you're the woman who teaches confidence and self-trust for a living. We're talking about: What it actually feels like to be passed over for a promotionWhy rejection can hit harder when you've worked incredibly hard for an opportunityThe connection between rejection, self-worth, perfectionism, and people-pleasingHow being overlooked can trigger the belief that you're not good enoughWhy someone else's decision is information—not a verdict on your worthWhat to do when rejection makes you question your competenceThe danger of putting your life, business, or dreams on hold while waiting to be chosenHow to remember who you are outside of your job title, career, relationship, or other people's opinionsWhy you don't need everyone to recognize your valueWhen rejection is an invitation to change direction—or build your own tableWhat it really means to choose yourself after disappointmentBecause here's what I'm learning: Someone else's “no” does not automatically mean you're not enough. Sometimes it means the timing isn't right. Sometimes it means the opportunity wasn't yours. Sometimes it means you need to change direction. And sometimes? Sometimes it means it's time to build your own damn table. But you don't get to let somebody else's decision write the story of who you are. You can be disappointed and still know your worth. You can cry and still trust yourself. You can be passed over and still refuse to abandon yourself. Because you don't need everybody to choose you. You need to choose yourself. And that's exactly where I'm at now. I'm not waiting for permission to become the woman I already know I'm capable of being. I'm back building, laughing, growing, creating, taking up space—and embracing the messy middle of becoming the woman I'm meant to be. Because this is what it looks like to actually live the work. Not perfection. Not pretending rejection doesn't hurt. Not having everything figured out. The messy middle. The plot twists. The uncomfortable transitions. The moments when you know you're becoming—but you're still figuring out how to become her. Welcome to The Main Character Experience. This chapter is going to be a wild one. Don't hand someone else the pen and let them write your identity based on their opinion of you. You can be overlooked without being less valuable. You can be rejected without being rejected as a person. And you can walk away from a closed door without deciding that you don't deserve to enter another one. Choose yourself. Then keep going. 🎬 💥 KEEP THE CONVERSATION GOING, GORGEOUS Enjoyed this episode of The Main Character Experience? Identity, Growth & Letting Go of Who You Thought You Had to Be

Send us Fan Mail What if the version of yourself you've been working so hard to become isn't actually the version of you that needs to show up next? There comes a point in personal growth when you have to ask a different question. Not “Who am I becoming?” But: “Who am I when I stop performing?” If you've spent years building an identity around being successful, confident, accomplished, dependable, healed, strong, or “the woman who has it all together,” you may eventually discover something uncomfortable: The identity that helped you survive one season may not be the identity you want to carry into the next one. And letting go of that identity can feel a whole lot like failure. In this episode of The Main Character Experience, we’re talking about identity, personal growth, self-discovery, reinvention, confidence, and the uncomfortable process of letting go of who you thought you had to be. Because sometimes the greatest evidence that you've grown isn't that you've become someone completely different. It's that you finally feel safe enough to be yourself. When Growth Feels Like Failure Nobody talks enough about how messy personal growth can be. Growth isn't always a glow-up. Sometimes it's grief. Sometimes it's disappointment. Sometimes it's realizing that the career, relationship, business, goal, identity, or version of success you worked so hard to build no longer fits. Sometimes it's starting over. And sometimes it looks suspiciously like failure. If you've ever thought: I should be further along by now.Why does starting over feel like I've failed? What if I don't want what I used to want anymore?Who am I if I stop being the successful one? What happens if the identity I've built no longer feels like me?Am I evolving, or am I just constantly reinventing myself? This conversation is for you. The Identity You Built May Have Served a Purpose There is nothing inherently wrong with creating identities, pursuing goals, building careers, starting businesses, reinventing yourself, or becoming more confident. The question is: Are you choosing that identity—or are you performing it? Sometimes we become so attached to who we're supposed to be that we lose touch with who we actually are. We learn to perform confidence. We perform success. We perform healing. We perform independence. We perform having it all together. And eventually, the performance can become so convincing that we forget there's a woman underneath it who simply wants to exist without constantly proving that she's enough. You Are Allowed to Outgrow Yourself Outgrowing an old version of yourself doesn't mean she was fake. It doesn't mean you wasted your time. It doesn't mean you made the wrong choices. And it certainly doesn't mean you've failed. It means you lived. You learned. You changed. You gathered new information about yourself. And now you're allowed to make different choices. You can honor the woman you were without continuing to live as her. You can appreciate the identity that carried you through one chapter without forcing her to lead the next one. Evolution isn't evidence that you were wrong. It's evidence that you're alive. What Happens When You Stop Performing? There is a particular kind of confidence that comes from no longer needing everyone to understand you. You don't need the perfect title. You don't need the perfect aesthetic. You don't need another five-year plan. You don't need to package yourself into something easier for other people to consume. You can simply ask: What feels true for me now? And then have the courage to live from that answer. That is where identity and self-trust meet. Because becoming more confident isn't always about adding something to yourself. Sometimes confidence is removing everything that was never really yours. In This Episode, You'll Explore: Why personal growth can feel like failureHow to recognize when you've outgrown an old identityThe difference between becoming and performingWhy starting over doesn't mean you've failedHow identity changes throughout different seasons of lifeWhat happens when your definition of success changesHow burnout can force you to reevaluate what actually mattersThe difference between a failed strategy and a lost purposeWhy you don't have to abandon your calling just because your current approach isn't workingHow to let go of labels, titles, and identities that no longer fitWhy self-trust is essential to authentic growthHow to stop performing confidence, success, and healingWhat it means to unapologetically take up spaceHow to reconnect with yourself beneath your accomplishmentsWhy you are allowed to change your mindHow to embrace reinvention without constantly searching for a “better” version of yourselfWhat it looks like to choose authenticity over performanceA Question Worth Sitting With Who are you when you stop trying to prove who you are? Not your job. Not your accomplishments. Not your relationship status. Not your business. Not your title. Not your social media presence. Not the version of yourself you think other people need you to be. Who are you underneath all of that? Maybe you don't need to become someone new. Maybe you need to give yourself permission to stop performing and start existing. Because there is magic in realizing: You don't have to become someone else to be worthy of taking up space. And you don't have to have everything figured out to begin again. You simply get to be. And maybe, for this season of your life, that is enough. 🎬 The Main Character Experience The Main Character Experience is for women who are ready to stop shrinking, stop performing, and start living from a deeper sense of identity, confidence, self-trust, and authenticity. Here, we talk about what it really looks like to navigate personal growth, identity shifts, boundaries, confidence, self-discovery, life transitions, and the messy process of becoming more fully yourself. Because your life isn't waiting for you to become perfect. You're already the main character. 🎬 💥 KEEP THE CONVERSATION GOING, GORGEOUS Enjoyed this episode of The Main Character Experience? My Childhood Crush Blocked Me: Here’s What It Taught Me About Self-Trust

Send us Fan Mail My childhood crush blocked me on social media. And honestly? I was surprised. I said, “Well, damn.” And then I kept scrolling. The old me would have handled this VERY differently. I would have wanted to know why. I would have investigated. I would have wondered what I did, whether someone said something, whether I misunderstood something, and (if we're being completely honest) I probably would have launched a full Facebook investigation. 😂 But this time, I didn't. And that moment made me realize something important about self-trust, emotional maturity, rejection, boundaries, and confidence: Sometimes self-trust isn't knowing exactly why something happened. Sometimes self-trust is being okay with not knowing. In this episode, I’m talking about what it means to stop chasing answers, stop taking other people's decisions personally, and trust yourself enough to respect someone else's boundary without needing an explanation. Because not every unanswered question needs an investigation. Not every relationship needs to be salvaged. And someone choosing distance from you does not automatically mean something is wrong with you. Sometimes people make decisions based on what they need for their own lives, relationships, peace, or growth. And you can respect that without turning their decision into a referendum on your worth. This is what emotional growth looks like: You notice. You feel what you feel. You say, “Well, damn.” And you keep living. In this episode, we talk about:  What getting blocked can teach you about self-trust Why needing to know why someone changed toward you can become a form of emotional spiraling  The difference between self-trust and needing certainty How to stop taking rejection personally  Why you don't need closure from everyone  Respecting someone else's boundaries without abandoning yourself  How people pleasing can make you feel responsible for other people's feelings  Why you don't have to convince everyone that you're a good person  How emotional maturity changes the way you respond to rejection  Letting go of the need to control how other people perceive you  What it looks like to genuinely trust yourself  Why protecting your peace sometimes means not investigatingThe biggest lesson? You don't have to understand someone's decision to respect it. And you don't have to chase someone down, defend yourself, or investigate every unanswered question just to feel secure in who you are. You can trust yourself. You can respect the boundary. You can keep your peace. And yes… You can say “Well, damn” and keep living. Because apparently, my childhood crush blocked me. And you know what? I'm good. KEY TAKEAWAYS:  Self-trust isn't always having the answer. Sometimes it's trusting yourself even when you don't have all the information. Rejection isn't always a reflection of your worth. Someone else's decision about their relationship with you doesn't have to become a statement about who you are. Boundaries don't require an explanation. You can respect someone's need for distance without chasing them for closure. Emotional maturity is knowing when to leave something alone. Not every unanswered question deserves your energy. Peace is more valuable than proving your point. Sometimes the most confident thing you can do is shrug your shoulders and keep going. 🎬 💥 KEEP THE CONVERSATION GOING, GORGEOUS Enjoyed this episode of The Main Character Experience? How to Get Unstuck and Create Real Change in Your Life

Send us Fan Mail Feeling stuck? Tired of saying “I’m going to change” and finding yourself right back in the same patterns a week later? This episode is for you. In this episode of The Main Character Experience, Coach Kala Simmons breaks down a simple, practical approach to creating real change when you feel overwhelmed, unmotivated, or unsure where to start. You do not need to completely reinvent yourself overnight. You don't need a perfect five-year plan. And you don't need to wait until Monday, January 1st, or some magical moment when you suddenly feel ready. You need to make a decision, choose one small behavior you can control, and prove to yourself that you can keep a promise. Coach K walks you through the exact process she uses to help women get unstuck and start building momentum: 🎬 Decide: “I’m not staying here.” Every major change starts with a decision that your current situation, mindset, relationship, habits, or circumstances are no longer acceptable. 🎬 Choose one micro habit. Instead of trying to change your entire life at once, choose one small behavior you can realistically control and commit to it for a short period of time. 🎬 Build self-trust through repetition. The goal isn't perfection. It's proving to yourself that you can do what you said you were going to do. 🎬 Rinse and repeat. Once you've built consistency with one habit, you can begin adding another. That's how lasting change is created. 🎬 Build a new habit. Build a new future. The woman you want to become isn't created through one massive transformation. She's built through the small choices you make consistently. And here's the truth Coach K really wants you to hear: If you are the problem, congratulations. You are the solution. That doesn't mean everything happening in your life is your fault. It means you have more power than you may realize when you stop waiting for your circumstances, other people, motivation, or the perfect moment to change. This episode is your permission to stop overcomplicating personal growth and start with one thing. Because once you experience a quick win, you can begin to imagine what becomes possible when you stop doing the bare minimum and go all in on you. In this episode, you'll learn:  How to get unstuck when you feel like you're not making progress  Why trying to change everything at once usually doesn't work  How micro habits can create lasting behavior change  How to build self-discipline without relying on motivation  Why keeping small promises to yourself builds self-trust  How to stop making excuses and start taking ownership  How your everyday habits shape your identity and future  Why consistency matters more than dramatic transformation  How to create momentum when you're struggling to change  How small changes can help you become “that girl”  Why identity, mindset, and confidence are essential for sustainable change  What it really means to go all in on yourself Your Main Character Era doesn't begin when everything changes. It begins when you decide you're not staying here. 🎬 💥 KEEP THE CONVERSATION GOING, GORGEOUS Enjoyed this episode of The Main Character Experience? I Spent 3 Years Teaching Women to Find Their Voice…Then I Learned This

Send us Fan Mail What happens when the woman who spent years teaching other women to find their voice, speak up, set boundaries, and stop shrinking realizes that confidence isn't always about saying more? In this return episode of The Main Character Experience, Coach Kala Simmons gets honest about what the last season of her life has taught her about confidence, self-worth, boundaries, personal growth, identity, and learning when to speak—and when to let silence speak for you. For the past three years, Kala has encouraged women to stop abandoning themselves, use their voice, take up space, and walk confidently in their truth. But growth has a way of teaching us that sometimes the lesson evolves. There is a difference between being silenced and choosing silence. There is a difference between being afraid to speak and being secure enough to realize you don't have to respond to everything. And there is a different kind of confidence that comes from knowing who you are without needing everyone else to understand, approve of, or agree with you. In this episode, Kala explores: ✨ Why finding your voice is only the beginning of confidence ✨ The difference between speaking up and feeling like you have to respond ✨ Why you don't have to explain yourself to everyone ✨ How boundaries and self-worth change the way you communicate ✨ The connection between confidence and emotional maturity ✨ Why being misunderstood doesn't mean you need to defend yourself ✨ The difference between choosing silence and being silenced ✨ What it means to use your voice with intention ✨ Why your truth doesn't become less true just because you didn't announce it ✨ What Kala learned during her time away from the podcast This isn't about becoming quieter. It's about becoming more intentional. Because the goal isn't to become a woman who never speaks. It's to become a woman who knows when her voice is needed, when her actions speak louder, and when she can simply keep moving. If you're navigating a season of self-discovery, personal growth, confidence building, setting boundaries, finding yourself, or becoming the woman you've been working so hard to become, this episode is for you. Welcome back to The Main Character Experience. The next chapter starts here. Follow the podcast and join the movement for women who are ready to stop shrinking, trust themselves, and become the main character in their own lives. 🎬 💥 KEEP THE CONVERSATION GOING, GORGEOUS Enjoyed this episode of The Main Character Experience? How Trying Something New Can Transform Your Confidence and Your Life

Send us Fan Mail Have you ever felt like you were constantly producing, performing, or trying to prove yourself? After months of workshops, speaking engagements, and nonstop commitments, I intentionally stepped away from social media to spend more time living than documenting. What I discovered during that break completely shifted my perspective on confidence, growth, and becoming the person I want to be. In this episode, I'm sharing the unexpected lessons I learned during my very first Pilates reformer class—and why stepping into a room full of strangers reminded me that confidence isn't something you're born with. It's something you build. We'll talk about:  ✨ Why becoming a beginner again is essential for personal growth  ✨ How doing things while you're scared builds genuine confidence  ✨ The surprising power of keeping small promises to yourself  ✨ Why slowing down can help you reconnect with who you really are  ✨ How living more and scrolling less can transform your mindset If you've been feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or like you're waiting until you're "ready," this episode is your reminder that courage comes before confidence—not the other way around. Remember: Confidence isn't built in one big moment. It's built every time you honor your word to yourself.
