    58. The Man Who Builds Museums Under the Sea | Jason deCaires Taylor

We have better maps of Mars than of our own ocean floor. We've explored less than 5% of it. And the part we do know, the coral reefs, is dying fast. So how do you make people care about a world they can't see? Jason deCaires Taylor's answer: sink art into it. Jason is a sculptor, diver, and marine conservationist who has built 9 underwater museums and placed more than 1,200 sculptures on the seabed, from Mexico to Grenada to Lanzarote to the fjords of Oslo. He casts them from local people, anchors them to survive Category 5 hurricanes, and then steps back to let nature finish the work. Coral grows on them. Fish move in. In some sites, fish abundance has gone up 68% and biomass 415%. In this episode we talk about: What 40 years of diving have shown him about how fast reefs are changingHow a sculpture becomes a reef, and how a worm led to a fur seal in 18 monthsWhether this is conservation or tourism infrastructure dressed up as conservationWhy we're so afraid of the seaHis dream: an underwater sacred space where nature is the architectWhy AI might end up pushing us back to the real worldThe invention he's still waiting for: a regulator that pulls oxygen from water Plus, News from the Future: Mara Delgado reports live from Museo Atlántico Deep in 2076. Modernity or antiquity? Tech or nature? Maybe the ocean is where both meet. Stay curious. Question everything. #MizterRadShow #FutureOfHumanity __ Full episodes' transcripts: https://www.mizter-rad.com/episodes More about Jason's underwater projects: Jason's website
