Saving Throes # 146 - Pages Through the Ages: Overlooked Monsters - Rot Grub

Welcome to the Saving Throes podcast! This is my Tabletop role-playing game podcast, part of the Red Rooster's Gaming Coop network where I talk gaming and gaming culture every week. Each episode will feature a topic or theme along with my take on current happenings in the world of tabletop role-playing games and semi regular updates on the games I am currently involved with, or new games or products I have come across. In my next entry of the Pages Through the Ages sub-series Overlooked Monsters, I wanted to take a look at the Rot Grub. At first blush, it is certainly a disgusting creature to see and is generally unpleasant, but many players don't fully appreciate just how unpleasant these things can truly be. In the early editions of the game, these were basically little "save-or-die" vessels that might make you feeling like the rug got pulled from under your feet, and in later editions, they lost most of their teeth and traded in the instant lethality for an annoying persistent damage (still lethal at the low levels). I compare and contrast each iteration of this menace, and then home-brew some new Rot Gubs that retain their teeth from the earliest editions, but retain a clean and mechanically fair presentation from later iterations. I think it puts them back on the map of enemies to avoid like the plague! Tune in to hear my thoughts on this critter throughout the years and how I would present them to my players today taking inspiration from each edition's interpretation.  If you would like to reach out, you can reach me at redroostersgamingcoop@gmail.com - I would love to hear from you! Saving Throes # 145 - Behind the Screen: The Adventure Design Philosophy in D&D 5e 2014

I came across 2 very interesting and rather insightful articles at Polygon.com, that detail out the design goals and thinking that went into designing many of 5e's most iconic adventures. These articles were more than just 5e fluff pieces and turned out to be quite informative to the approach they used. This information is coming straight from the horses mouth, as it is from an interview with Chris Perkins who was rather candid about the process. I was surprised by how much actually resonated with me and matched some of my own values when it comes to what I consider the best ways to play D&D. Although I haven't played or run all of the 5e hardcover adventure paths, this got me more interested in a couple of them, particularly Rime of the Frost Maiden. Tune in to hear about what adventure paths I have run and/or played in and my own take on these experiences.  If you would like to reach out, you can reach me at redroostersgamingcoop@gmail.com - I would love to hear from you!
