    Ranger Tales (of the Spooky Kind) with Ranger Bruce

    Retired Ranger Bruce Bytner recounts his 24-7 two week stay at the 18th century Hampton Mansion of Hampton National Historic Site. The mansion, completed in 1790, was once the largest private home in America, contributing to its ghostly lore.which is known for its rich history and reputed hauntings.  Bruce is a great story teller and his fist hand accounting of his haunted encounter haunting had our spines tingling!!     If you want more ranger tales by Bruce, check out his book, A Park Ranger's Life: Thirty-two Years Protecting Our National Parks.     Ranger Talks with Rangers of the Lost Park

    Yosemite National Park; A "Killer" Hike

    Yosemite in 1974.  A young couple was hiking back to Bridalveil Campground after camping by a Ostrander lake when one of them was shot and killed.  Was it murder? or an accident? The deceased was found by hikers propped up beside the trail and they wondered... was this person alive or dead? At the scene, there was a pamphlet on the ground nearby called Spiritualism, Sorcery, and Witchcraft.  An arrest was eventually made and at the trial, a spiritual guide (or maybe a witch?) put a curse on Yosemite's Law Enforcement Specialist.  You can't make this stuff up!     When three people at Carey Hot Springs in Blaine County, Idaho, witnessed something involving a young child that deeply concerned them, they didn’t look away—they called 911. Their decision set off an investigation that eventually led hundreds of miles away to Yellowstone National Park.     Havasu Canyon; Attacked Eight Miles Down

    What was supposed to be an epic birthday adventure at Havasu Falls turned into a terrifying fight for survival. Two women traveled deep into the remote Havasupai Indian Reservation in Arizona to experience the turquoise waters and spectacular waterfalls of Havasu Canyon. But after the friends became separated near the village of Supai, one of them was followed and viciously attacked. With no roads into Supai and only one BIA law enforcement officer in the village that morning, the investigation unfolded in one of the most isolated communities in the country.  CORRECTION:  If you listened to this episode on the first day, we had some information wrong about getting a permit to visit the Havasupai Reservation.  We made the correction in the audio and the corrected info is this... According to the Havasupai Tribal Website, the Campground permits are $455 per person for a 3-night reservation and lodge permits are $2,277 for a 3-night reservation (allows up to 4 people per reservation).
