    Autumn Equinox and the Alchemy of the Dark

    In this episode of The Awen and Amen Podcast, I reflect on autumn as more than a seasonal change. It is a spiritual invitation to gather the harvest of our lives, release what has finished, and begin the inward descent into the quiet work of transformation. True flourishing does not mean living in eternal summer. There are seasons of inspiration, creation, movement, and growth, but there are also seasons when we are called inward. Into stillness. Into reflection. Into the darkness of the cocoon, the womb, and the soul where real alchemy begins. This is the Amen to the Awen: the sacred pause after inspiration, when what we have gathered is allowed to deepen, transform, and eventually become something new. We explore the illusion of permanence, our fear of change, the cycles that shape our lives, and the presence of the Divine within us through every season. The illuminating Christ, the inner fire, does not disappear when the light fades. The Divine sits with us in the darkness too. As the scales tip toward winter, the question becomes: What are you ready to release, and what are you ready to carry inward so it can become something new?

    Love the Legacy of Father Mychal Judge

    Love the Legacy of Father Mychal Judge Twenty-five years after September 11, 2001, I find myself thinking less about the fear and anger of that day and more about something else I remember: the way ordinary people showed up for one another. In this episode of Awen & Amen, I reflect on the life and legacy of Father Mychal Judge, the Franciscan friar and FDNY chaplain whose ministry embodied a love that did not stop to ask about politics, religion, sexuality, status, or whether someone had somehow earned compassion. Father Mychal was imperfect, as all of us are. Yet he chose presence. He chose service. He chose to enter suffering rather than turn away from it. His life raises a question that feels especially important twenty-five years later: Have we actually learned how to love one another any better? From the communal response to 9/11 to a culture that can sometimes place laws, institutions, ideology, and self-interest ahead of human need, I explore what it might mean to recover something deeper: agape love, grace, generosity, and our shared human communion. We do not have to agree about everything to recognize one another as part of the same human family. Beneath our divisions, we belong to one another. And perhaps the legacy of people like Father Mychal Judge is not simply that we remember them, but that we continue what they embodied. So this episode is both remembrance and invitation: show up for someone. Offer grace. Feed someone who is hungry. Sit beside someone who is hurting. Love where love is needed. Drawing from John O’Donohue, Jesus, the Qur’an, the Upanishads, the Bhagavad Gita, the Gospel of Thomas, Christian mysticism, and Celtic spirituality, we explore Divine nearness, abiding, grace, and the possibility that the spiritual journey is less about finding God somewhere else and more about awakening to the Sacred already within, among, around, and through us. Perhaps flourishing begins with remembering. Grace is nearer than your breath. Love is already here.
