The Virgin Suicides with Derrick McDuff

"We knew the girls were really women in disguise, that they understood love, and even death, and that our job was merely to create the noise that seemed to fascinate them..." In the latest episode of AT THE MOVIES IN THE 90s, your host Emma Arneil is joined by brand new guest Derrick McDuff to discuss Sofia Coppola's striking 1999 directorial debut, The Virgin Suicides. Tackling psychological themes with a serious dollop of angst, and boasting an incredible cast young and old, Coppola's debut was assured and profound, telling the story of sisters in 1975 Detroit. We wonder if it still carries the same power today... Host / Editor Emma Arneil Guest Derrick McDuff Executive Producer A. J. "Welcome to the Rock..." In the latest episode of AT THE MOVIES IN THE 90s, your host A. J. Black is joined by previous guest Baz Greenland to tackle Michael Bay's explosive 1996 action thriller, The Rock. Pairing screen legends Sean Connery and Nicolas Cage, this could well be Bay's most proficient picture. A slick, funny and exciting tale which stands as one of the defining action pictures of the 1990s. They discuss tethers to the 60s via Connery and much more... Host / Editor A. J. Boogie Nights

"Aim it at her t**s, kid..." In the latest episode of AT THE MOVIES IN THE 90s, your host Mark McManus and brand new host Emma Arneil dig deep into Paul Thomas Anderson's sprawling 1997 exploration of the 70s porn industry, Boogie Nights. One of the most celebrated films of the decades, putting PTA and Mark Wahlberg on the map, plus revitalising the career of Burt Reynolds, this serves as a searing Altman-esque look at the dark side of an already seedy industry. Decades on, does it have the same power? And is that final moment still able to take your eye out? We find out! Host / Editor Mark McManus Co-Host Emma Arneil Producer A. J. Braindead with Colin Jackson-Brown

"Where you gonna go, where you gonna run, where you gonna hide? Nowhere... 'cause there's no one like you left." In the latest episode of AT THE MOVIES IN THE 90s, your host Mark McManus is joined by previous guest, podcaster Colin Jackson-Brown, to look at Peter Jackson's 1992 comedy splatter film, Braindead. An absolute giant of the gore low-budget comedy horror genre, Jackson's film serves as a growing calling card that will lead him down the road to, eventually, Middle Earth. But has it stood the test of time? We find out! Host / Editor Mark McManus Guest Colin Jackson-Brown Producer A. J. At the Movies in the 80s... E.T. The Extra Terrestrial

""I'll... be... right... here." In the latest episode of AT THE MOVIES IN THE 90s, we get in our DeLorean head back to the 1980s, as your host A. J. Black looks at Steven Spielberg's 1982 science-fiction drama, E. T. The Extra Terrestrial. Joined by co-host James Harvey, this was initially the pilot for an intended 80's focused spin-off podcast show, timed to co-incide with Spielberg's new film Disclosure Day. While the spin-off might still one day happen, it felt a shame to leave this conversation on the shelf. Let us know if you thirst for an 80s version of our show! James and I nonetheless look at E.T. through a personal and indeed critical lens, getting under the skin of a film oft-remembered for the wrong reasons... Host / Editor A. J. Dick Tracy

"I know how you feel. You don't know if you want to hit me or kiss me. I get a lot of that." In the latest episode of AT THE MOVIES IN THE 90s, your hosts Mark McManus & A. J, Black dig into Warren Beatty's 1990 adaptation of classic American comic book detective, Dick Tracy. In the wake of Tim Burton's Batman, Beatty brings to life his passion project with a galaxy of stars, a palette of vibrant colour, and an unashamed adoration for the gangster film of old. But did it work then and does it work now? We try to find out... Host Mark McManus Co-Host / Editor A. J. Body Snatchers with Emma Arneil

"Where you gonna go, where you gonna run, where you gonna hide? Nowhere... 'cause there's no one like you left." In the latest episode of AT THE MOVIES IN THE 90s, your host Mark McManus is joined by previous guest, horror podcaster Emma Arneil, to look at Abel Ferrara's 1993 sci-fi horror, Body Snatchers. Remaking the classic Invasion of the Body Snatchers narrative, this gives the terror a chilling modern, middle-American sheen. But why is it less vaunted or remembered than its predecessors? We try to find out... Host / Editor Mark McManus Guest Emma Arneil Producer A. J. Rush Hour with Dev Elson

"This is the LAPD. We're the most hated cops in all the free world. My own mama's ashamed of me. She tells everybody I'm a drug dealer." In the latest episode of AT THE MOVIES IN THE 90s, your host A. J. Black is joined by brand new guest, host of spin-off AT THE MOVIES IN THE NOUGHTIES, Dev Elson, to look at the action buddy comedy from 1998, Rush Hour. The first of a hugely successful trilogy that cemented Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker as one of the key buddy cop duo's of the late 20th century, Brett Ratner's film (and sequels) have nonetheless been questioned on several fronts in recent years, particularly from a racial perspective. But are they more inclusive and appreciated than people might expect? And what buddy movie lexicon are they part of? We find out! Plus, don't miss Tony and Dev next week over on ATMIT00s discussing the sequel, Rush Hour 2... Host / Editor A. J.
