    Learning More About The NICU

EPISODE 45: In today’s episode I visit with a Neonatologist who has been practicing in the academic and private practice settings for over 49 years. He served a ten-year term as a member and Co-Chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) Steering Committee, to create guidelines for neonatal resuscitation. He is an expert in the field of neonatal encephalopathy. He is an educator of patients and physicians and an advocate for babies in the NICU. Guest: Dr. Jay Goldsmith In this episode, we cover asking the important questions, like: • What is the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU)?  • Who cares for babies in the NICU?  • How can I help if my baby goes to the NICU?  • How many babies are born prematurely in the United States?  If you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or supporting someone who is, this conversation is about educating yourself. The goal is to help you feel informed, supported, and empowered. SPANISH FOR OB ULTRASOUND SERIES: Common Terms Part 2

EPISODE 42: In this Medical Spanish episode, we're covering common pregnancy and ultrasound terms that healthcare providers use every day when caring for Spanish speaking patients. FREE DOWNLOAD of today's common terms at https://www.drlexihill.com/spanishpart4 Joined by Dr. Antonio Santos and maternal fetal medicine sonographer Cynthia Evans, we discuss practical ways to explain pregnancy concepts, ultrasound findings, fetal growth, twin pregnancies, anatomy scans, and more using patient friendly Spanish. Topics covered include: - Pregnancy and gestational age - Due dates and fetal heartbeats - Amniotic fluid, gestational sacs, and yolk sacs - Cervix, uterus, and ovaries - Growth ultrasounds and fetal measurements - Anatomy scans and Doppler studies - Fetal movement and fetal position - Breech presentation - Twin pregnancies, including monochorionic and dichorionic twins - Common ultrasound terminology used in maternal fetal medicine One of the most important lessons from this discussion is that translation is only part of the equation. Clear communication means using language that patients understand while still explaining complex medical concepts accurately and compassionately. SPANISH FOR OB ULTRASOUND SERIES: General Phrases Part 2

EPISODE 40: One of my favorite things about medicine is learning from other people and hearing how care looks a little different depending on where you trained, where you’re from, and who you care for. So for this episode of The Dr. Lexi Show, I brought together a group of friends and colleagues from different backgrounds to talk about something that honestly does not get discussed enough - communicating with Spanish speaking patients during pregnancy care and ultrasound visits. Guests:  • Dr. Mauricio La Rosa, MFM physician, from Peru • Dr. Antonio Santos, MFM fellow, from Puerto Rico • Cynthia Evans, MFM sonographer, from Mexico Let me tell you, this episode turned into one of the most fun conversations. We talked about: - Common phrases used during fetal ultrasounds - Differences in Spanish between countries and regions - Words that mean totally different things depending on where someone is from - How sonographers and providers can better connect with patients - Why simply trying to speak someone’s language can make such a difference This episode is not about being perfect. It’s about making patients feel comfortable, respected, and cared for. Whether you’re an OB, MFM, sonographer, nurse, trainee, or just someone interested in medical communication, I think you’ll really enjoy this one. SPANISH FOR OB ULTRASOUND SERIES: General Phrases Part 1

EPISODE 39: In this episode of The Dr. Lexi Show, I sit down with three incredible guests to talk through real life Spanish phrases commonly used in maternal fetal medicine, ultrasound, and obstetric care. We discuss how language varies across countries, why certain phrases may mean very different things depending on culture, and how simply trying to communicate can help patients feel more comfortable and supported. Guests:  • Dr. Mauricio La Rosa, MFM physician, from Peru • Dr. Antonio Santos, MFM fellow, from Puerto Rico • Cynthia Evans, MFM sonographer, from Mexico We cover: - Common phrases used during fetal ultrasounds - How to explain pressure, movement, positioning, and exams - Differences between Spanish spoken in different countries - Funny and important cultural misunderstandings - Tips for sonographers, OBs, MFMs, nurses, and providers - Why patient communication and self advocacy matter so much I also share a little bit about my own journey learning Spanish from Texas to Spain to Costa Rica and how my accent became a very interesting mix along the way. 😂 One of my favorite parts of this conversation is how honest and real it is. Language is imperfect. Accents are different. Vocabulary changes from country to country. But patients notice when you try, and that effort can go a very long way in helping someone feel safe and cared for during pregnancy. Whether you are a provider, sonographer, student, or simply interested in medical communication, I hope this episode gives you practical tools and a few laughs along the way.
