    159: Rejecting The Enemy's Lies About Birth (Home Birth, Natural Birth, Postpartum Complications) [with Patricia Eastman]

    Growing up Patricia said she would never get married and never have children. Living in the secular world she had bought into the enemy’s lies that childbirth was scary, that children were a burden, that they would hold you back, cost a lot of money and take up all of your time. But the Lord had a plan for her life that would not be derailed. After re-committing her life to Jesus and getting plugged in at a local church with a deep, Christian community, she could hear God speaking to her through His word, and her and her boyfriend decided to get married and have children. It didn’t take long for her to land on having a home birth, a decision which the Lord would continue to confirm throughout her pregnancy.     158: When Postpartum Is Harder Than Giving Birth (Birth Center Birth, Wrongful Diagnosis, Meconium Aspiration) [with John & Makenzie Payne]

    As a first time mom, Mackenzie’s pregnancy and labor were relatively smooth. A long early labor, yes, and a later gestation, but a quick active labor and a very quick pushing stage, although that part was forced upon her. For Makenzie and John, pregnancy and labor would be the easy part. It was postpartum that things would get hard. After getting home from a hospital transfer for meconium aspiration, they thought the postpartum drama was over, but unfortunately, it was just getting started. Little did they know they’d be spending their next few days in the hospital, and unfortunately, completely unnecessarily! But God has purpose in everything in our lives, He’s faithful, and so is his supernatural peace that He gives us in the process!     After a very poor experience at the hospital with her first baby, Rebekah would be choosing home birth from this point on. She did not want a repeat of her first birth and especially her first postpartum. Thankfully, she was able to find a home birth midwife in her area that she jived with and would go on to have two beautiful home births, while also having to address the anxieties from her first birth head on when it came to pushing!     156: The Birth Was Painless But The Experience Wasn't - Part 1 (Hospital Birth, Natural Birth, Shoulder Dystocia) [with Rebekah Watkins]

    When your husband is a paramedic and you watch lots of birth videos, what else is there to need going into your first unmedicated birth, and a hospital birth at that? Well, while Rebekah’s first labor went quickly and smoothly, the actual delivery did not. A supposed shoulder dystocia and then a quick cutting of the cord and whisking away of her baby would leave her traumatized and completely alone. If that wasn’t enough, she would practically be held hostage at the hospital for the next several days with NICU policies and threats of rare and dangerous diseases her perfectly healthy baby did not have. All of this would feed directly into her postpartum experience (not to mention her deep second degree tear) leaving her anxious, fearful and altogether unwell.     154: God's Will For Your Birth Can Look Different Each Time (Hashimotos, Natural Birth, Hospital Birth) [with Miriam Jussila]

    When your mom has had six natural births, five of which were in the hospital, and one home birth that wasn’t actually a great experience, it’s only natural that you’d want to have a hospital birth. SO when Miriam got pregnant with her first, that’s just what she chose, and thankfully, this specific hospital was actually quite accommodating for a hospital and she had a great midwife team and amazing volunteer doula! As her births continued and as she became more and more educated, she realized her deep desire for a home birth, but she would have to surrender that desire to the Lord in order to experience His peace during her pregnancy and lean into His timing, not hers!     153: Navigating the Surprises of Pregnancy with Grace (Hospital Birth, Home Birth, Twins) [with Kelli Ford]

    Kelli was anticipating a beautiful, unmedicated hospital birth for her first, but an assumed diagnosis of cholestasis would have her being induced on pitocin and change all of her plans. Next time she was anticipating the same outcome, but thankfully had the birth she had planned the first time, but realized that she no longer wanted to fight the battle of trying to have a natural birth in the hospital and being questioned about every decision she was making. So when she got pregnant with twins, she and her husband landed on having a home birth! This didn’t mean, however, that her anxiety around the delivery vanished, as God would have to teach her that surrendering her plans and giving Him control was the only way that would happen, regardless of where or how she gave birth!     152: How Postpartum Complications Strengthen Your Faith (Hospital Birth, Natural Birth, Infant Illness) [with Scotlyn Harrison]

    A lot of second time moms think they have a longer labor ahead of them than they actually do…and it was no different for Scotlyn when her labor zoomed by and nobody made it to the labor and delivery room before her daughter was born, not even Scotlyn! But a dream birth doesn’t always make for a dream postpartum. When Scotlyn’s daughter, Winnie, was two weeks old, her and her husband would face a challenge harder than birth itself as their daughter was rushed to the ER with vitals that wouldn’t stabilize, and eventually taken to Duke’s pediatric cardiology department. Seeing her daughter in this state was incredibly difficult for Scotlyn, but God used this situation to bring Scotlyn closer together with her husband, closer together with God himself, and to allow her to never take the gift of life for granted.
