    The Real Story - Food And Fuel | POET

    Doug Berven joined POET in March of 2003 and has served the organization in several key roles since then. In his current role as Vice President of Corporate Affairs, Doug promotes the corporate objectives of POET, the importance of agriculture, and the benefits of biofuels domestically and internationally. Doug currently sits on the U.S. Farmers and Ranchers Alliance Executive Committee and Board, the Fuels Institute Advisory Board, is a Senior Advisor to Solutions from the Land, is the Executive Director of the South Dakota Ethanol Producers Association, is team leader on the U.S. Grains Council Ethanol Advisory Team, and serves on several other industry associated work groups, committees, and associations. He also manages strategic corporate relations for POET, promotes state, national, and international policy objectives for the industry, and is a recognized authority on biofuels, renewable energy, and agriculture. Today, we get to hear from that wealth of experience and expertise on a topic that can be controversial in the biofuels world, food versus fuel. We are going to explore the growth of bioethanol in the US and how it has shaped rural economies over the past four decades and impacted our food systems. And then we are going to pivot to the global south and explore the challenges of food insecurity and how bioethanol could actually improve those dynamics rather than threaten the food supply. We discussed the innovative technology, regulatory environment, and supply chain dynamics that could help shape the future of the global south and see a huge shift in agriculture, allowing many countries to successfully produce their own food and fuel.

    Doubling the Impact - Bioethanol's Role in Emerging Markets | USGC

    Mackenzie Boubin serves as the Director of Global Ethanol Market Development for the U.S. Grains Council, a non-profit organization that operates globally to promote the use of U.S. barley, corn, sorghum and related products including ethanol. In this capacity, Mackenzie oversees development and execution of the Council’s global ethanol program including strategy development, program implementation, public affairs, and strategic partnerships.  Mackenzie has a broad experience in the ethanol industry - prior to joining the Council, she was the Biofuels and Industry Relations Director for the Minnesota Corn Growers Association (MCGA), and before that was with the Minnesota Biofuels Association.     The Clean Cooking Mandate of Global Agencies | UNIDO

    Mr. Jossy Thomas serves as an Industrial Development Officer and leads the Bioenergy Programme at the Just Energy Transition Unit of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). With over 25 years of international technical cooperation experience with UN-ESCAP and UNIDO, he has been actively involved in promoting universal energy access in developing countries. Currently, his focus lies on scaling up modern clean cooking solutions in developing countries and coordinating the Secretariat of the Council On Ethanol Clean Cooking (CECC), a network platform comprising 21 member countries dedicated to clean cooking initiatives. We dive deep into international development efforts in this episode, hearing about Jossy’s start with UNIDO developing some of the first mini-grids in Nigeria at the forefront of the clean energy transition.  Today, UNIDO is supporting, among many of their efforts, bioethanol cooking projects, and we will hear about the program in Tanzania, as well as the new endeavor in Madagascar.  We will also discuss why clean cooking transitions are so difficult and outline the three top opportunities to make a meaningful shift toward access to these technologies.  Lastly, we will learn a little more about the Council on Ethanol Clean Cooking - a new initiative started at COP28, as well as recent global movement in clean cooking commitments, motivated by a Clean Cooking in Africa Summit, hosted by the IEA this month.  It’s a packed episode with insights from an industry veteran that you won’t want to miss!

    Bioethanol Around the World: North America | Trenton Agri Products

    Tony Leiding is the President of Trenton Agri Products LLC in Trenton, Nebraska.  Prior to entering the renewable fuels industry, he was a Captain in the United States Army.  During his time in the Army, he was a UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter pilot and did tours in both Iraq and Afghanistan.  He holds a degree in Finance from Iowa State University, a Master of Business Administration from the University of Mary, and a Master of Science in Energy Management from the University of Colorado.  He is currently the President of Renewable Fuels Nebraska and is a Board Member and serves on the Executive Committee of the Renewable Fuels Association. Today Tony is going to walk us through what the bioethanol sector looks like in North America.  We will get a crash course on bioethanol production at the plant level, and learn about all of the amazing co-products that are also realized through bioethanol production.  We will also learn about the volumes produced for the North American market, how much of that stays in the country, how much is exported, and where all of the fuel and co-products ultimately end up.  Tony shares his vision for the future of bioethanol in North America and the potential it holds to benefit the rest of the world.  During his service in Afghanistan and Iraq, Tony noticed the pollution caused by cooking practices and poor quality fuels and sees a window of opportunity for bioethanol to impact in these areas as well around the world, creating a better quality of life in emerging markets.  Join us as we explore the biggest bioethanol market in the world, and the opportunity that comes with those markets.

    Bioethanol Around the World: Asia | Marquis Energy Global

    Johan Ullman started his career at Procter & Gamble SA (Geneva), eventually taking on the role of Global Strategy Owner for Ethanol Sourcing. He then transitioned to the trading side of the market, spending close to a decade in the ethanol trading divisions of Cargill and Bunge. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to play a pivotal role in the establishment of Marquis Energy Global in Singapore, where he presently holds the position of Managing Director and lives with his wife and four children. In this episode we tackle the enormous continent of Asia, and provide a high level overview of what bioethanol use, demand, and future potential looks like for the industry.  Johan will share the importance of understanding global markets and why it was important for Marquis as an American company to have a location based in Asia.  He will touch on the variety across Asia and what feedstocks are used in different regions, as well as how the use of co-products is different than what we might see in North America.  We will look at some success stories, including the Philippines, and how they have been able to leverage bioethanol for the transportation industry, and how policies have assisted in creating demand across the continent.  And of course, we will hear about the potential for bioethanol clean cooking and how it could fit into both a rural and urban space in Asia as clean fuels become more widely available.

    David Carpintero joined ePURE as Director General in June of 2022. Previously, he was Director General for a Brussels-based food trade association and he has a long international experience in the agricultural sector with postings in Europe and America. ePURE is the united voice of the European renewable ethanol industry and represents their members' interests to the EU institutions, industry stakeholders, the media, and general public. They are partnering with European biorefineries to build a more resilient future in Europe as they reduce carbon emissions, create secure food systems, and ensure energy independence. David is going to guide us as we land in our next global stop learning about bioethanol production around the world and share some insights on the production and market dynamics in Europe.
