The prodigal son parable, also known as the Parable of the Loving Father, highlights the father's patience, compassion, and unwavering love. The son's journey involves asking for his inheritance, squandering it in reckless living, facing the consequences, and eventually coming to repentance. The young man's repentance follows a pattern: confessing his sin, forsaking the sin, expressing humility, and accepting any judgment or penalty. The father's reaction to the returning son is one of compassion, running to greet him, embracing him, and celebrating his return. Quick to forgive and celebrate when the lost son returns. Illustrates the heart of our Heavenly Father. Insights from the Parable Reveals much about the heart of the elder son who rebukes those unwilling to receive the lost who repent. Passage: Luke 15:11-32. Exposition of the Parable Younger son's impatience and desire for freedom. Father grants his request, knowing it might not end well. Younger son squanders his inheritance in reckless living. Finds himself in a desperate situation, feeding pigs during a famine. Comes to himself and decides to return to his father, confessing his sin. Repentance Pattern in the Parable Confession of sin: Acknowledging wrongdoing. Forsaking sin: Resolving to turn away from past mistakes. Humility: Returning without expectations, willing to be a servant. Acceptance: Willing to accept whatever judgment the father deems. Father's Reaction Father sees the son from afar and runs to him. Demonstrates the father's longing and love for the lost. Father's heart mirrors our Heavenly Father's excitement when sinners repent.
