Growing Up With Vince & Jeremy

Rainbow Alley Productions

We grew up in the UK from 1970 to 1990. This show is all about the two of us looking back and putting bits of our shared past under the microscope, from the early ‘80s ‘Protect and Survive’ /Mutually Assured Destruction nuclear panic, to the theme music from The Incredible Hulk; from Wimpy Burgers to wimpy Orac from Blake’s 7; from the Falklands War to Falco’s Rock Me Amadeus. We look back with fondness and bafflement and sometimes with abject disbelief at what life was like when we were growing up.

Send us a text Episode 6: Languishing in Obscurity (November 22nd 2017) 'Non scientes quod ambitiosam (Never knowingly pretentious)' This episode: As we discover just how many times Critically Acclaimed UK Playwright™ Vince can easily be irked, Jeremy is turned into a dynamic pose-able action figure with eagle eyes and grip hands (just in time for the Christmas toy market); both men clash swords over the age-old debate of art vs commercialism, but both are in firm accord that romantic advances towards complete strangers should not involve needlessly over-complicated plumbing/messaging arrangements, and that Cockney Rhyming Slang is incomprehensible gibberish. The artists/bands rated and/or discussed are The Shadows, R.E.M, Radiohead, Mike + The Mechanics, and Tony Orlando and Dawn. In this spooktactular edition of what’s been called “the scariest podcast ever recorded” by bull**** ‘medium’ Derek Acorah (not really; just like him, we’re making it all up), Jeremy adopts a new non de plume for his Rock and Roll Name and accidentally insults the state of Texas; Vince solves a centuries old murder case by identifying pretentious middle-class totty actor Martin Shaw as Jack the Ripper, and confesses he’s never been to Wigan (Vince, that is: not sure about Martin Shaw – perhaps he can let us know in the comments section); and both friends fondly reminisce about their school days at a mediocre Comprehensive when they bossed the second-rate teaching staff into letting them write and film a terrible video adaptation of Dracula, which nonetheless was considerably better than the one made by Francis Ford Coppola fifteen years later. The artists/bands rated and/or discussed are Warren Zevon, R Dean Taylor, Talking Heads, Michael Jackson, and Classics IV. Send us a text Episode 4: The Clive Dunn of Glam Rock (August 24th 2017) 'You Wouldn't Like Us When We're Angry' This episode: 1970’s SPECIAL! As Operation Yewtree closes in on The Wombles of Wimbledon Common, Jeremy and Vince confidently (if unwisely) don flared trousers, platform heels, pseudo-silk kimonos and glitter face paint in celebration of “the decade of lurid wallpaper, silly hairstyles and burly men warming their hands around braziers,” to quote lurid and burly historian Dominic Sandbrook. Jeremy wonders if TV’s Dr David Banner (aka The Incredible Hulk) has the worst employment history of any medical professional in history; Vince unpicks a dastardly scheme by ‘Scrumpy ‘n Western’ cider-drinking yokel-funsters The Wurzels to thwart a proposal by a taskforce from the Environmental Agency and North Wiltshire County Council to tackle traffic congestion in Swindon Town; and both men express sadness and dismay at the unwaveringly tatty and unappealing kitsch that forms the vast majority of Elvis merchandising. The artists/bands rated and/or discussed are David Essex, Jeff Wayne, The Wurzles, The Stranglers, Marc Bolan and T-Rex, Blondie, and Elvis Presley. Send us a text Episode 2: Maverick Jazz Cops (June 15th 2017) '90 minutes of your life you’ll never get back! ' This episode:  As Jeremy considers a life on the run, hiding in the shadows (not the band), Vince ponders the lack of men named Colin in Rock and Roll.  Up for discussion by both is the staggering implausibility of hit BBC legal drama Judge John Deed; how U2 might possibly have been inspired by The Wombles; and the feeble arguments advanced by songwriters Rogers and Hart in their lyrics for The Lady is a Tramp - a song which on close inspection seems to entirely exonerate the character of the supposed loose woman.  The artists/bands rated and discussed are The Zombies, Jefferson Airplane/Jefferson Starship/Starship, New Order, Steely Dan, and Suzanne Vega. S02E05 Barely Intelligible (The Death of Elvis in 1977 / Wand'rin' Star by Lee Marvin from 1970 / Cheers and other US sitcoms)

Send us a text Vince puts on his blue suede shoes, curls his lip, shakes his hips and takes us back to the August of 1977, when, after years of sad decline, the incomparable Elvis Presley died, aged just 42. Was it drugs or a heart attack? Could it have been prevented if someone was actually caring for the King of Rock and Roll? And, most importantly, just how completely devastated was Vince's Elvis-loving mum? Our UK No 1 comes from 1970, when tough guy Lee Marvin growled that he was born under a wand'rin' star. You just wouldn't get this kind of song topping the hit parade these days. Imagine Jason Statham's low cockney rumble on (Googles popular musicals of the 21st Century) "Man Up" from "The Book of Mormon", or Liam Neeson's Irish monotone on "What is this Feeling?" from "Wicked "! Jeremy fondly remembers the first time he watched the wonderful US sitcom "Cheers" - broadcast in the early 1980s on the newly-formed fourth channel, Channel 4. "Cheers" leads us to other US sitcoms of the 70s and 80s that were cosy viewing for us young Brits, such as "Rhoda", "M*A*S*H*", and "Taxi". (RIP George Wendt) A big thank you to BG's Brok'n Record - an entertaining, chatty podcast from the US, all about the kinds of things we love (music, digressions, laughs).
