    Follow Well Before You Lead - Part 1

    If you’ve ever thought, “I could run this better,” you might be skipping the one skill that makes great leaders: followership. We’re Elmer Cañas Jr. and Willie C. Simpson, and we go straight at the uncomfortable truth most people avoid. Everyone wants influence, but very few people want submission, patience, or the discipline of being led. We ground the conversation in 1 Samuel 24, where David has a perfect chance to take out King Saul and chooses restraint instead. That story opens a bigger discussion about honoring authority without excusing sin, and why most of our frustrations with leaders are not about biblical wrongdoing or illegal behavior but about preference. We unpack a simple filter that changes everything: is the tension about policy or preference? We also talk about how modern consumer culture, YouTube, and AI can create the illusion that we don’t need leaders, mentors, or craft, and how that mindset shows up at work, at home, and on worship teams.     The Ownership Shift

    If something breaks at church, do you call “the landlord,” or do you grab the toolbox? We’re naming a tension every ministry team feels: the difference between showing up like an employee and serving like an owner. That ownership shift changes how we handle messes, gaps, broken systems, and the quiet moments where someone needs prayer and nobody is officially assigned.  We anchor the conversation in Nehemiah 4:6, where the wall gets built because the people “had a mind to work.” That line pushes us toward unity of heart and shared responsibility. We also talk through what ownership looks like in real church leadership: not doing everything yourself, not measuring people by productivity, and not mistaking control for commitment. Owners sound different, too. They naturally say “our church” and “our people,” they care about how things could be better, and they stay close to the front line where ministry actually happens.  From worship teams to small groups, we share stories of leaders who grew into ownership through trust, clarity, personal investment, and discipleship. We also get honest about how leaders can accidentally kill ownership by saying no for volunteers, making assumptions about people’s capacity, or crowding the space where others need to grow.     Discipling Busy People

    Your schedule isn't just packed, it's preaching. If we're not careful, the calendar becomes the loudest voice in the house, quietly training us to believe we don't have time for spiritual formation or real discipleship. We talk through how to disciple busy people without adding another exhausting program.     Character Before The Platform

    The platform you want might be the very thing that exposes what you've been avoiding. We talk about character before the platform, because results can look amazing while the inner life quietly erodes.
