  1. Ep12 - Community

    Ep12 - Community

It’s been said that “It takes a village to raise a child”, which emphasises the communal effort required for the upbringing of a child. The same could be said of the all-in efforts and all-round resources required to take care of a person with terminal illness at the end of life.  In this episode, we discuss community and its importance in palliative care. Palliative care is not the sole province of multidisciplinary care teams; the field has widened to include grassroots organisations, social service agencies, ethnic and religious groups, workplaces, neighbours, extended family members, friends, and the community at large, all of whom play important roles across different settings. They support those at end-of-life and their families through the progression of illness, death and bereavement. This is an aspirational vision of what a compassionate community in action would look like. Compassionate communities are part of a broader public health approach to palliative care and serve to improve access to services, increase the capacity of caregiving, raise death literacy, and boost social, emotional and spiritual support so as to enable as many people at their end-of-life the comfort and ease of dying at home surrounded by their nearest and dearest family and friends. 2. Ep10 - Forgiveness

    Ep10 - Forgiveness

Reconciliation plays an important role in the psychosocial and spiritual aspects of palliative care, especially when addressing the profound impact of anger and regret. The act of forgiveness becomes significant towards the end of life as it holds the power to bring healing to both the forgiver and the forgiven. Expressing sentiments like "I am sorry" and "I forgive you" becomes particularly meaningful in this context. Forgiveness is not only a gift bestowed upon others but also a profound act of self-compassion. The ability to let go of the past facilitates inner peace and serves as a powerful relief from the burden of resentment or grievances, thereby contributing to the reduction of psychological and spiritual pain. This episode’s theme is forgiveness and we explore how uttering the words "I forgive you" opens pathways for deeper emotional connection and sharing during the remaining time, fostering a sense of closure and understanding. In the realm of end-of-life care, embracing forgiveness emerges as a transformative and therapeutic practice that brings solace to those involved. Today, we hear from 3 guests who've experienced forgiveness & reconciliation Interviews:Lim Yu Beng, Actor, Writer, Director & MusicianJoyce Cheah, Manager, Clinical Pastoral Care, Assisi HospiceAmy Toh, Art Therapist, Dover Park Hospice Follow us and find out how you can "Live Well and Leave Well". Ep9 - Resilience

Resilience can be defined as the remarkable capacity to endure, withstand, and recover from adversity—a testament to one's toughness in the face of challenges. Patients facing life-limiting illness demonstrate resilience in how they navigate the emotional and existential challenges, adapt to their changing circumstances and find strength during adversity. This episode also explores the realm of caregiving and how caregivers summon the determination to face each day and provide unwavering support to their ailing loved ones. While facing the prospect of losing their loved one, how do they navigate and cope with moments of profound difficulty? Palliative care teams emerge as crucial pillars of support in this time. How do healthcare professionals play a role in supporting patients and their caregivers? How do they lend their strength to families who have lost their loved one? This episode seeks to highlight their indispensable role in offering guidance, solace, and a collaborative approach to end-of-life care.
