I'm Missy Eversole, author, speaker, podcaster, and Colson Fellow, and I believe the stories we read and the truth we take in can shape the way we live out our faith. Each week, we'll pull up a chair and talk with Christian fiction and nonfiction authors about their books, their faith, the stories behind their writing, and the biblical truths God has placed on their hearts. Some conversations will take us into fictional worlds that remind us of courage, redemption, hope, and grace.     What does it look like to care for vulnerable children when God has not called you to foster or adopt? In this episode of Bold Faith Now, Missy talks with author, editor, adoptive mom, and foster care advocate Katie Cruice Smith about the beautiful and sometimes difficult journey of adoption and foster care. Katie shares how God redirected her dream of motherhood after years of infertility and ultimately grew her family through the adoption of three biological siblings. She also challenges the church to look beyond labels and circumstances and see every child as someone created by God, loved by Him, and worthy of welcome and support. Katie also shares the incredible story behind her children's book, Why Did You Choose Me?, which began as an essay she wrote while applying for an adoption grant. In this episode, Missy and Katie discuss: How God used infertility and unexpected circumstances to lead Katie and her husband toward adoption and build their family in a way they never imagined. Why adopted and foster children should never be defined by their past, diagnoses, circumstances, or labels. Practical ways Christians and churches can support foster and adoptive families, even when they are not called to foster or adopt. How an adoption grant essay eventually became Katie's children's book "Why Did You Choose Me?" Katie reminds us that while not every Christian is called to foster or adopt, Scripture does call us to care for vulnerable children. Sometimes that looks like opening your home. Other times it looks like bringing a meal, offering respite care, helping with homework, sending an encouraging text, praying faithfully, or simply making sure a family knows they are not walking alone.
