State of the Workforce takes an in-depth look at the many services each division within the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development offers and how they each work towards creating jobs or a safe work environment for Tennesseans. From American Job Centers to Tennessee OSHA and the state's Elevator Unit, the Department provides citizens with diverse services. Each month, guests will discuss these services and how they impact the lives of tens of thousands daily.

    Kofee Broz

    In this episode, we visit Kofee Broz, a coffee shop that is doing far more than serving drinks in Robertson County. Kofee Broz is creating opportunities by opening its doors to individuals with physical and intellectual disabilities—providing workforce experience, hands-on training, and valuable skills that prepare them for future employment. We sit down with owner Elecxus Ellis, who shares how her dream of opening a coffee shop began when she was just 10 years old. Guided by faith and a passion for helping others, Elecxus built Kofee Broz with a mission to “bridge the gap where coffee meets education.” The conversation highlights how Kofee Broz is empowering people through meaningful work, building confidence, and creating an inclusive environment where employees can grow personally and professionally while serving their community.

    Thistle Farms

Through residential support, trauma-informed care, hands-on job training, and workforce development, Thistle Farms is creating pathways to lasting independence. We sit down with CEO Tasha Kennard, who reflects on nearly 30 years of impact in Nashville and the organization’s growth. What began in 2001 with a small workforce program making candles, lotions, and other products has expanded into a 25,000-square-foot manufacturing facility—equipping women with transferable skills for a wide range of careers. In the next segment, Tasha shares insight into Thistle Farms’ job readiness program, which combines classroom learning with real-world experience. From coaching women on workplace expectations to hands-on training in the Thistle Farms Café—where participants learn to navigate challenges like customer service and conflict resolution—the program prepares women for long-term success. She also discusses what’s ahead for the future of job readiness at Thistle Farms. Finally, we hear from Lacey Stone, a recent graduate of the program, who shares her journey and determination to continue growing. After completing the program, Lacey pursued additional training with UpRise Nashville and Titans Construction Camp (TC2), ultimately leading to employment and a promising future.

    Nuclear Renaissance in Tennessee

    In this episode, we explore the growing nuclear renaissance in Tennessee, with a focus on the innovation and opportunity emerging in Oak Ridge and across East Tennessee. We’re joined by Tracy Boatner, President and CEO of the East Tennessee Economic Council (ETEC), and Braden Stover, Chief Policy Advisor for the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development, to discuss why this is such an exciting time for the nuclear industry and its workforce. The conversation also highlights Oak Ridge’s historic role in the Manhattan Project and how that legacy continues to shape cutting-edge energy solutions and career opportunities today and into the future. Finally, we talk with Brandon Phinx, State Apprenticeship Deputy Director, about National Apprenticeship Week and the importance of expanding apprenticeship programs to build the next generation of skilled workers.

    Go Build Tennessee

    On this episode, we spotlight Go Build Tennessee and the growing demand for skilled trades professionals across the state. Next, we talk with Brent Davidson, a Go Build member, Project Manager at ABEC Electric Company, and Instructor at the Construction Trades Academy, about preparing the next generation of skilled workers and the hands-on training opportunities available to students. Finally, we hear from Jackson Art, a current electrician student at the Construction Trades Academy, who shares why he chose to pursue a career in the trades instead of the traditional college route—and how that decision is shaping his future.
