Ep 119: Joe Rivers Nominates Chic’s “C’est Chic”

Season 10 grooves right along with the return of yet another dear friend-of-the-pod. This week it’s everyone’s favorite Brit Down Under - Joe Rivers! You might recall Joe’s first appearance on the pod, during which we got schooled on the late hyper-pop elder SOPHIE, it was a banger. Joe’s bringing disco heat this week in the form of “C’est Chic” by Chic.  You’ll certainly know this album’s tentpole track - “Le Freak” - if you haven’t been living with a tribe of isolated Amazonian hunter-gatherers for the last 50 years. But as you might imagine, Joe does a bang-up job of expressing how this album is so much more than a freak out at a wedding. Disco is JOY. And we couldn’t agree more with Joe’s stance that we could all use a bit more unabashed joy in our lives. But does Joe have the necessary moves to turn this party out and gain “C’est Chic” a place in the pantheon? FREAK (AND FIND) OUT. And why don’t you give Joe’s Substack One Life a read?? Ep 118: Doug Morrell Nominates Les Paul & Mary Ford's "How High the Moon"

This week things are getting electric. But also a little bit analog. Professor* Doug Morrell is schooling us on the history of the electric guitar and multi-track recording, as we discuss Les Paul and Mary Ford's recording of "How High the Moon." The last time Doug spoke with us, he brought his engineering brain to our conversation about Wendy Carlos and "Switched On Bach, so you know he's going to come correct (as the kids say). *not a real professor This episode also comes as a playlist on our YouTube channel. O Tyler Riiiife… O Laurie Andersoooooon.O Mom and Dad… Our buddy Tyler Rife has brought his big ole hunk of a brain and beard back to the pod to extoll the virtues of avant garde artist/musician Laurie Anderson’s “Big Science”. And boy does he bring it! Tyler puts his full repertoire of analytical acumen to the task and it makes for one beautiful conversation. Full of sharp takes and passionate verve, Tyler is an exemplary dude and we feel very lucky to know him. But will his case be enough to earn spot for “Big Science” in the TOGT11 pantheon? Ep 116: Eric Matthew Richardson Nominates Randy Newman's "Good Old Boys"

Music? We love it! And we loved talking shop with our newlywed friend Eric Matthew Richardson about Randy Newman's 1974 album Good Old Boys. FYI: If you think you're in for an hour-long conversation about jaunty tunes from the Toy Story franchise, you're in for a surprise. This one has real satirical bite and will make you think about the potential role of musicians and recording artists as activists. But will Eric make a strong enough case for this album to join the pantheon? He may have a friend in us, but we've still got standards. Check it out. Ep 115: Kristen Bonstein Nominates Patti Smith's "Horses"

We’ve been talking about punk a lot this season, so it’s only fitting that we finally consider the Godmother herself - Patti Smith - and her hugely influential debut album, Horses. Returning guest Kristen Bonstein talks about seeing Gilda Radner’s Patti Smith impersonation on SNL, enjoying the Riot Grrrl music that Smith inspired, missing the final show at CBGB where Smith performed, and using this album as warmup music for a college show (directed by none other than Michael Osinski). We’ve been waiting to cover this one for a while now, but will it join the pantheon? Come along with us to Birdland and find out! Once again, no thanks to Riverside, this one's got some audio issues. We humbly apologize. This episode also comes as a playlist on our YouTube channel. Ep 114: Meg Williams Nominates The Clash's "London Calling"

Guess who’s back in the house. Or perhaps the supermarket. It’s our most frequent guest on the podcast - the inimitable Meg Williams - and she’s here to talk with us about “the only band that matters.” There’s a reason why The Clash’s 1979 album London Calling ends up on all of those “best of all time” lists (even if it is a bit on the long side). It’s when the band really started veering from their punk roots and experimented with other genres, all without compromising their politics. But what else will Meg say to make a case for this one to enter the pantheon? Will she be derailed by our inevitable tangents? Will the final verdict be death or glory? (Spoiler alert: no one died during the recording of this episode.) Apologies for the subpar sound quality on this one, y'all. Let it be known that Riverside is not the greatest recording tool. 7. Ep 113: Lindsay Teske Nominates The Monkees' "More of The Monkees"

Ep 113: Lindsay Teske Nominates The Monkees' "More of The Monkees"

Our Season 10 returning guest extravaganza rolls right along this week with our buddy Lindsay Teske! You might recall Lindsay's first appearance on the pod extolling the punk virtues of Never Mind The Bollocks, Here's The Sex Pistols by, ahem, Sex Pistols. She checks back in from London this week with what might seem at first like a radical departure from her wheelhouse - The Monkees' 1967 release More of The Monkees. A heaving thirty track tome, More of The Monkees actually turns out to illustrate a classic story of the artist struggling to stand in their values in the face of crushing corporate constraints. Lindsay threads the needle on her argument like the pro she is - bringing in her own personal dedication to the album while also reminding us how punk comes in all shapes and sizes, as long as it costs the artist something. A necessary reminder that just because we might snicker at some bands as we look back on them now, they really did do the damn thing in their time. Will Lindsay's argument cut the proverbial mustard? Only one way to find out. Ep 112: Jess Winingham Nominates Joan Armatrading's "Joan Armatrading"

Reunited and it feels so good! Get ready to see a lot of familiar faces, because for our tenth season, we’ve asked some of our favorite guests to come back into our virtual living room to nominate an album that came out before they were born. This week Jess Winingham - who previously nominated Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours - has brought the 1976 self-titled album from Joan Armatrading. We talk about the sound of 70s music and the tendency to lump Armatrading in with all the other female recording artists of the era. (Smashing the patriarchy is a multi-step process, y’all.) Will Jess get a second album into the pantheon? Or will her love for Led Zeppelin distract her from the task at hand? Guess you’ll have to listen to find out.
