    La Crosse City Council member and candidate Mac Kiel (District 7) in studio discussing the future of the old Kmart, housing & zoning changes, homelessness and city services ahead of the primary election. Perhaps one of the more curious issues for city residents is the old Kmart, which is located in District 7. Kiel breaks down a recent update she listened to from the development group and when the building is coming down. Kiel is also on the working group studying the potential hiring of a city administrator, so she breaks down what they've learned so far and they will be doing next. Other topics included housing/zoning/homelessness, which all kind of correlate. We got into the weeds a bit on zoning changes that could promote housing. We also discussed some other changes with amenities, like the city ending large-item pickup and beginning to charge for use of the brush site. Kiel is one of three candidates running for District 7, so primary voting starts Feb. 4 and ends Feb. 18.     We got to know La Crosse mayor candidate Ellie McLoone, who stopped in the WIZM studio Tuesday for La Crosse Talk and discussed the experiences she brings to the position and her top priorities for the city.  Some of those included housing, homelessness, having a city administrator, attracting business and filling vacancies within the police department. Spent the first half of the show hearing about McLoone’s backstory, her roots in La Crosse, experiences and work history. After that, we got into some more specific thoughts McLoone has on different topics, including how this side of the state needs a mental health facility, plus how the city might balance its wants and needs. That led to a discussion on whether La Crosse should have a city administrator.  Capped off the show with more on the city’s housing dilemma.     Sara Eskrich on Final Five: A new way to vote to improve Wisconsin elections

    Sara Eskrich, executive director of Democracy Found, joined to discuss a new system of voting called Final Five. Eskrich will be in La Crosse to discuss this more with the public, along with UW-L political scientist Scott Scinta, during a LeaderEthics hosted chat from noon-1 p.m. Wednesday at the Black River Neighborhood. To take part, RSVP here. Lee Rasch, executive director, was in the WIZM studio along with Eskrich calling from her office near Madison, to break down what Final Five voting is, how it’s different from Ranked Choice voting and the benefits of moving to this kind of system.
