30th Birthday Special! (Feat. Jemma & Saten)

I turned 30 this month, and I wanted to mark it with the two people who have known me the best: my mom, Jemma, and my sister, Saten. This one is different from every episode I've made. No research, no framework, just my family at the table and the stories that shaped us. We go back to our first year in America, when my mom walked Saten to school every morning with me in tow, and unpack the "never late, never absent" rules we grew up with (and how Saten still ended up with 31 absences). We talk about the Vegas years, the letters and calling cards that kept us connected to grandma in Armenia, and the day we flew across the world to surprise her after seven years apart. And yes, we settle Buddy vs. Bella, revisit some fashion choices I can't defend, and finally ask my mom who her favorite daughter is. This is the mom I get my whole way of seeing the world from, and the sister who lived every chapter of it with me. We move between English and Armenian the way we do at home. Translations are on screen, so you won't miss a word. Thank you for spending my birthday with us. 00:00 Welcome — a very special birthday episode 00:26 Meet the guests: Mom (Jemma) & Saten 01:15 Mom at 30: two kids in a brand-new country 01:51 One year into America — the walk to school 03:29 Never late, never absent: the school rules 04:10 Saten's 31 absences 04:59 Sick-day negotiations with dad 06:07 Married at 24 — "those were different times" 07:36 Before kids: Russia, languages, and mom's goals 08:59 The Vegas years (and hiding the packing) 10:31 Shopping runs in the family 11:17 The fake-website dopamine trick 12:25 The hardest part of leaving Armenia 13:53 The calling-card era 16:58 Surprising grandma after seven years 17:41 Fashion crimes: the France outfits 19:46 Graduation sneakers & proud-mom moments 21:10 Buddy vs. Bella — and the favorite daughter 24:56 "Have we grown?" — reflections at 30 25:30 Boundaries, self-respect, and getting wiser 27:39 Armenian school cliques & the old rules 30:13 Teacher stories (and a little bit of fraud) 31:54 Wrapping up — gratitude & birthday wishes Check Out Previous Episode! https://youtu.be/6TEWOTXKJGA Follow Tatev Talks: Instagram https://www.instagram.com/tatevtalkspodcast/ TikTok https://www.tiktok.com/@tatevtalkspodcast Follow Dr. Sarkissyan: Instagram https://www.instagram.com/drsarkissyan/ TikTok https://www.tiktok.com/@drsarkissyan Guests: Jemma — Tatev's mom Saten — Tatev's sister Credits: Recorded and Produced by: @omnitherealproductions Creative Consultant/Talent Booker: @diannneekara Recorded at @omnitherealproductions Support the show
