From the 1960s through the mid-1980s, Don had a front-row seat to the artists, songs, and cultural moments that forever changed American music and radio. Early in his career, a memorable interview with Muhammad Ali became a turning point, opening more doors in broadcasting and leading to a lasting friendship with the legendary champion. As Don's career flourished, he also formed friendships with some of music's biggest names, including Michael Jackson, and hip-hop pioneers Eazy-E and N.W.A. Those relationshipsMary Wilson of The Supremes, gave him a unique, behind-the-scenes perspective on the artists whose music shaped generations and transformed the sound of American culture. As an on-air personality at influential stations like KGFJ and the legendary KDAY, Don witnessed the rise of rhythm and blues, soul, funk, disco, and the birth of hip-hop. More than introducing hit records, he experienced firsthand how Black music became a powerful expression of creativity, resilience, culture, and social change. Don also shared that music with American service members through the Armed Forces Radio and Television Service (AFRTS), bringing a welcome connection to home for military families stationed around the world. Whether listeners were in Los Angeles, Europe, Asia, or aboard Navy ships at sea, his broadcasts carried the voices and rhythms that defined an era. Throughout this episode, Don reflects on the changing landscape of radio, the unforgettable artists he met along the way, and the enduring influence of Black music on American culture. His stories offer a rare glimpse into a time when radio personalities helped introduce future legends to the world and when every record had the power to unite communities. Join us as we honor Black Music Month through the eyes of a broadcaster who lived the music, respected the artists, and understood the power of radio to connect communities. Don Tracy's memories remind us that every great song tells a story—and every generation has a voice that helps carry it forward.
