The Hidden Reason You Keep Seeking Approval

How much of your life has been shaped by seeking approval from other people? In this powerful episode of The Secrets of Being, I welcome award-winning author, licensed clinical psychologist, and trauma expert Dr. Lesley Goth for a deeply meaningful conversation about self-compassion, healing, trauma recovery, and reclaiming your sense of worth. We begin with one of Dr. Goth's most powerful insights: *"I've liberated myself from the need for approval from others."* From there, we explore why criticism often carries more weight than praise, how early childhood experiences shape our beliefs about ourselves, and why so many of us become people-pleasers without even realizing it. Dr. Goth explains why self-compassion is one of the most important skills we can develop, especially after trauma. She shares practical ways to quiet our inner critic, release shame, and begin treating ourselves with the same kindness we naturally extend to the people we love. We also dive into the fascinating connection between trauma and the body. Dr. Goth explains how painful experiences are stored in our nervous system, how EMDR therapy helps process unresolved trauma, and why practices like walking, yoga, breathwork, mindfulness, and meditation can support emotional healing. Whether you've experienced childhood trauma, grief, anxiety, sexual assault, or simply carry emotional wounds that still affect your daily life, this conversation offers hope and practical tools for moving forward. If you've ever questioned your worth, struggled with self-criticism, or wondered whether healing is truly possible, this episode is for you. Dr. Goth reminds us that healing isn't about perfection. It's about learning to offer ourselves compassion, trusting the process, and believing that hope is always available. Thank you for being part of The Secrets of Being community. If this conversation resonates with you, please subscribe, share it with someone who may need encouragement today, and leave a comment about what spoke to your heart. Together, we can create a world where healing, compassion, and hope become contagious. With love, Dawn P.S. You can connect with Dr. Lesley Goth at https://denverfamilycounselingservices.com

Your Creativity May Be Trying to Heal You

What if the thing that seems to be falling apart in your life is actually making room for who you're becoming? In this episode of The Secrets of Being, I sit down with artist, author, and speaker Ellen Benfatti, author of Caterpillar Soup, for a fascinating conversation about creativity, spiritual awakening, nervous system regulation, the subconscious mind, resilience, and trusting the gifts that are trying to emerge through us. Ellen's journey didn't begin with a plan to become an artist. It began during a period when her life seemed to be unraveling. As her marriage, career, home, and familiar sense of identity changed, she kept receiving one simple nudge: paint. She didn't have formal supplies or a grand vision. She started with Crayola watercolors and computer paper because she simply needed somewhere to put what she was experiencing. Looking back, she now recognizes that painting had become a safe container where she could self-soothe, regulate her nervous system, grieve, and reconnect with herself. One of the things that struck me most about Ellen's story is that the people around her didn't necessarily understand what she was doing. Some even thought she'd lost her way. But she kept creating. We talk about why nobody else has to understand the dream that was given to you, how easily we dismiss the little breadcrumbs that appear along our journey, and what can happen when we finally trust ourselves enough to follow them. Ellen also shares the meaning behind Caterpillar Soup and offers a perspective I absolutely love. We spend so much time celebrating the butterfly that we forget what the caterpillar has to endure before transformation ever becomes visible. Sometimes the messy, uncertain, uncomfortable middle is exactly where we're becoming. We also dive into the subconscious mind, creativity as a form of healing, spiritual and creative awakening, limiting beliefs, fear, intuition, Reiki, and how Ellen now uses artwork as a mirror to help people explore what may be happening beneath their conscious awareness. Ellen makes clear that she approaches this work as an artist drawing from her own experiences rather than as a medical professional. If you're navigating a life transition, questioning who you're becoming, feeling called toward something others don't understand, or rediscovering a creative part of yourself you buried years ago, this conversation is for you. Your caterpillar season isn't the end of your story. It may be the part that's preparing you to fly. Thank you for being part of The Secrets of Being community. If this conversation speaks to you, subscribe, share it with someone who may be navigating their own season of transformation, and tell me in the comments: What creative breadcrumb has life been asking you to follow? He Walked Away From the Traditional Life and Never Looked Back

In this motivating and deeply honest episode of The Secrets of Being, I am joined by entrepreneur, baseball coach, mentor, and social media creator L.A. Gamo, also known as The Baseballogist. From the very beginning of our conversation, it became clear that L.A.’s story is about much more than baseball. It is about having the courage to take the road less traveled, trusting yourself when nobody else understands your vision, and building a life rooted in fulfillment instead of simply following society’s expectations. L.A. opens up about his early years playing baseball, discovering entrepreneurship through books like Rich Dad Poor Dad and The Compound Effect, and realizing at a young age that he wanted something different for his life. We talk about what it means to break generational patterns, challenge cultural expectations, and step outside the traditional “go to school, get a job, play it safe” mindset. As an Asian-American entrepreneur, L.A. shares the difficult but transformative process of trusting his own path even when the people around him did not fully understand it. Throughout this episode, we explore entrepreneurship, mindset, fear, confidence, purpose, social media growth, parenting, and the importance of defining success for yourself. L.A. speaks honestly about building his brand from the ground up with simple tools, consistency, and vision rather than waiting for perfect circumstances. He explains why success leaves clues, why comparison can destroy creativity, and why so many people stay stuck because they are afraid to take the first step. This conversation is filled with practical wisdom for anyone who has ever felt called to create something bigger for their life. One of my favorite parts of this conversation was hearing L.A. talk about fatherhood and fulfillment. He shares why one of his greatest accomplishments is not money or social media success, but the amount of time he gets to spend with his children. We discuss the importance of leading by example, teaching confidence, creating a life aligned with your values, and giving yourself permission to build a life that feels authentic to who you truly are. If you have ever questioned your path, struggled with fear, felt misunderstood, or wondered whether you should pursue the dream on your heart, I hope this episode reminds you that the most meaningful life is often found on the other side of courage. In this inspiring and educational episode of The Secrets of Being, I am joined by veterinarian, longevity specialist, and founder of Helping Pets Live Longer, Dr. Kevin Toman. Dr. Toman shares his incredible 40-year journey in veterinary medicine and how his passion evolved into helping pets not only live longer but thrive with better quality of life. We talk about the profound emotional bond between humans and animals and why our pets truly become family. We also discuss rapamycin, one of the groundbreaking longevity therapies being studied in both humans and animals, and how reducing inflammation may be one of the keys to extending lifespan. This conversation also explores the changing landscape of veterinary medicine and the importance of relationship-centered care. The Messages From My Daughter That Still Appear Today

In this emotional and deeply personal episode of The Secrets of Being, I am honored to sit down with educator, blogger, podcast host, and grief advocate Dave Roberts. Dave shares the heartbreaking story of losing his 18-year-old daughter, Jeannine, to a rare and aggressive cancer shortly after she gave birth to her daughter, Brianna. Through profound grief, Dave began experiencing signs, synchronicities, dream visitations, and spiritual connections that completely transformed the way he viewed life, death, and consciousness.  Together, we talk about the concept of continued bonds and how our loved ones continue communicating with us through memories, symbols, animals, music, dreams, and moments that feel impossible to explain. Dave shares the powerful story of Bootsy, his daughter’s beloved cat, who became an emotional lifeline during the darkest period of his grief journey. We also explore spirituality, sacred law, intuition, science, after-death communication, and the belief that we are spiritual beings having a human experience.  This conversation is about more than grief. Energy Alignment Changes the Way You Live and Work

In this heartfelt episode of The Secrets of Being, I am honored to sit down with Doug D. Gordon, an international keynote speaker, life coach, and author whose life journey is a powerful reminder that transformation often begins in our most difficult moments. Doug began his career in the demanding world of corporate finance, where long hours, high expectations, and relentless pressure were part of daily life. But a profound near-death experience changed everything and invited him to reevaluate what truly matters. Doug shares how that pivotal moment awakened him to a deeper purpose rooted in healing, communication, and helping others navigate the challenges of stress, work, and personal growth. Today he works with individuals and organizations around the world, guiding people toward greater clarity, emotional balance, and meaningful success. His philosophy is simple yet powerful: when we align our work with love, service, and authentic purpose, our energy becomes vibrant and our lives naturally begin to flourish. Throughout our conversation we explore practical techniques for managing stress and maintaining peace in high-pressure environments. Doug discusses the importance of meditation, grounding exercises, visualization, and learning how to become an observer of our thoughts. These mindfulness practices help regulate the nervous system, strengthen rational thinking, and allow us to respond to challenges with calm rather than reaction. We also talk about the transformative power of gratitude and how shifting our perspective can help us see difficult moments not as burdens but as opportunities for growth and compassion. Doug also speaks openly about the deeper philosophy behind his work, including the importance of optimizing our energy, reframing challenges, and viewing the people we encounter in our daily lives with greater empathy and understanding. He encourages us to see our colleagues, communities, and even difficult interactions as opportunities to bring kindness, communication, and healing into the world. This conversation is ultimately about more than success or productivity. It is about living with intention, cultivating peace during difficult times, and remembering that life is not just about reaching a destination. It is about embracing the journey, honoring our experiences, and choosing gratitude along the way. Doug reminds us that when we align with love and purpose, our energy shifts, our mindset expands, and the impact we create naturally grows. If you are seeking greater balance, exploring your purpose, navigating stress, or looking for practical tools to cultivate gratitude and resilience, this episode will offer both inspiration and insight. It is a reminder that even in the most challenging seasons of life, there is always an opportunity to grow, heal, and reconnect with who we truly are. With love, Dawn P.S. Letting Go of Perfection and Embracing Compassion

In this meaningful episode of The Secrets of Being, I am joined by Dianna Collier, a certified positive psychology coach and licensed school psychologist, for a compassionate and honest conversation about burnout, resilience, and the healing power of self-compassion. Dianna shares the personal experiences that led her to shift her professional path and discover the life-changing principles of positive psychology. After years of working in a demanding role supporting others, the stress began to affect her own health and well-being, including struggles with fertility that ultimately became a wake-up call. That experience led her to reevaluate how she was caring for herself and inspired her to explore new ways of supporting both her own mental health and the well-being of others. Our conversation centers on the idea that burnout is not simply about being overwhelmed. It is often about forgetting to extend the same compassion to ourselves that we freely give to others. Dianna introduces the concept of self-compassion and explains how it can help us navigate stress, emotional exhaustion, and the pressure to be perfect. She shares the three essential components of self-compassion: mindfulness, common humanity, and self-kindness. These principles remind us to acknowledge our suffering without judgment, recognize that we are not alone in our struggles, and offer ourselves the same kindness we would offer a dear friend. During the episode, Dianna also walks us through a powerful practice known as the self-compassion break, a technique developed by researcher Kristen Neff. This simple yet transformative exercise invites us to pause during moments of stress, acknowledge what we are feeling, and respond with warmth and understanding rather than criticism. Through guided reflection, we explore how self-compassion can help us regulate our emotions, respond more thoughtfully in challenging situations, and show up more fully for our families, our work, and our communities. Another important theme in our discussion is the courage it takes to feel our emotions rather than dismiss them. Dianna reminds us that resilience does not come from ignoring pain or pushing it aside. Instead, resilience grows when we allow ourselves to experience difficult emotions with honesty and tenderness. By acknowledging our humanity and giving ourselves permission to be imperfect, we open the door to healing and personal growth. This episode is an invitation to slow down, listen inward, and offer yourself the compassion you deserve. If you have ever felt overwhelmed, exhausted, or caught in the cycle of striving for perfection, Dianna’s insights will remind you that caring for yourself is not a weakness. It is an essential part of living with balance, resilience, and authenticity. With love, Dawn P.S. You can connect with Dianna here: https://diannacollier.com/

Embracing Imperfect Action on the Path to Growth

In this heartfelt episode of The Secrets of Being, I am joined by bestselling author, entrepreneur, and podcast host Sarah Barnes Humphrey for a powerful conversation about self-worth, authentic leadership, and the courage it takes to find your voice. Sarah’s story is one of resilience, reinvention, and embracing the imperfect path of growth. From starting her career in her family’s logistics and supply chain business to becoming a recognized thought leader, author, and podcast host, her journey is a reminder that progress often begins with a leap into the unknown. Sarah shares how her career began straight out of high school when she stepped into the family business with dreams of eventually leading the company. After more than two decades in the industry, she found herself at a turning point when the company closed its doors. Suddenly without a job, a team, or a clear roadmap forward, Sarah leaned into creativity and determination. What began as a podcast experiment, inspired by listening to other creators, turned into a platform that connected voices across industries and eventually grew into a thriving media company supported by a team of talented professionals, many of whom are women-led entrepreneurs. Throughout our conversation we explore the deeper theme that guides Sarah’s work today: self-worth. She speaks openly about the ongoing process of learning to find and reclaim her voice over and over again. Rather than seeing self-worth as a fixed destination, Sarah describes it as a lifelong journey shaped by experiences, setbacks, growth, and reflection. Together we talk about the power of progress over perfection, the courage to pursue ideas that feel aligned with your soul, and the importance of allowing yourself to evolve beyond society’s expectations of what success should look like. Sarah also shares the inspiration behind her memoir and how writing the book became a therapeutic process that allowed her to revisit difficult experiences with compassion and perspective. Through storytelling, she discovered new layers of understanding about her own journey and the role self-worth plays in shaping the way we show up in our relationships, our careers, and our leadership. We discuss the importance of awareness and self-reflection when navigating difficult moments, including the role of therapy, mindfulness, and honest conversations in helping us better understand ourselves. Sarah emphasizes that growth often comes from taking inventory of our experiences without judgment and learning to give ourselves grace along the way. She also offers insight into building authentic communities, blocking out unnecessary noise, and focusing on meaningful connections rather than constant consumption. One of the most powerful ideas Sarah shares is the concept of discovering your “superpower.” Instead of searching endlessly for a single purpose, she encourages listeners to reflect on how they naturally show up in the world and how their strengths can create impact. For Sarah, that superpower lies in creating safe spaces for conversation where people feel seen, heard, and valued. This episode is a reminder that self-worth is not something we achieve once and hold forever. It is something we rediscover again and again as we grow. When we embrace authenticity, allow ourselves to learn from our experiences, and have the courage to begin even when things are not perfect, we create space for transformation. If you have ever struggled with self-doubt, questioned your path, or wondered how to step more fully into your authentic voice, this conversation will offer encouragement and perspective. It is an invitation to move forward with courage, compassion, and the understanding that progress is always more powerful than perfection. With love, Dawn P.S.
