You Can Love Prodigals Deeply Without Enabling Destructive Choices (pt2)

Send us Fan Mail One child is melting down, acting out, or cutting contact and the whole family feels it. We sit with the hard question parents rarely get to ask out loud: what happens to siblings when all the energy goes to the “prodigal”, and how do well-intentioned moms and dads accidentally add pressure to the kids who are still trying to do everything right? We talk through practical, brain-aware parenting moves that protect connection in a tense home. That includes simple check-ins with siblings, why comparison backfires, and how your approach must change as a child grows from 10 to 16 to college age and beyond. As kids get older, we shift from control to influence, keeping an open hand while staying present enough that repair is still possible. We also draw a clean line between unconditional love and healthy boundaries. Love means the relationship is not based on performance; boundaries mean we do not participate in or fund destructive behavior. We unpack discipline as teaching, explore when “helping” becomes enabling, and share how parents can leave the door open for reconciliation without chasing, nagging, or manipulating. If you are a Christian parent, we close with hope: prayer as connection, trust in God’s character, and the reminder that you are not alone. Parenting Through A Prodigal Season With Calm And Clarity (pt 1)

Send us Fan Mail Your child is making choices you never imagined and the question starts looping in your head: where did I go wrong? We sit with that fear honestly and talk about what a “prodigal season” can look like, from leaving home or faith to acting out in ways that scare you. More importantly, we separate what you can influence from what you cannot control, so you can stop parenting from panic and start parenting with clarity. We dig into emotional regulation for parents, because fear often shows up as lecturing, controlling, or shutting down. When we escalate, kids feel less safe and the relationship can fracture right when connection matters most. We share practical steps to slow down, pause before reacting, pray, and invite support from a counselor, pastor, trusted friend, or mentor. You’ll also hear a clear breakdown of healthy conviction versus unhealthy shame, and why shame and social pressure can quietly poison trust inside a family. Then we get concrete about what to do instead of guilt. Guilt might get temporary compliance, but it rarely creates real heart change. We talk about speaking truth with love, holding boundaries without endorsing destructive choices, and staying open for reconciliation. The parable of the prodigal son becomes a powerful parenting model here: the father doesn’t call the chaos “good,” but he remains watchful, compassionate, and ready to welcome his child home. If you’re searching for Christian parenting help, guidance for parenting teens and young adults, and hope for families walking through a prodigal child situation, this conversation is for you. Helping Kids Navigate Fear: What to Do When Fear Shows up (pt 2)

Send us Fan Mail Fear can look like defiance, tears, anger, silence, or a full-on meltdown and that’s exactly why it confuses so many parents. We talk about what’s actually happening in a child’s brain and nervous system when fear shows up, and how a curious, regulated adult can change the outcome in real time. We talk through the parenting moves that unintentionally increase child anxiety, like minimizing with “you’re fine,” over-reassuring, or trying to control the moment so we can feel better. Instead, we walk through brain-based parenting strategies that validate fear without feeding it: naming what’s happening in the body, staying present when we don’t have perfect answers, and treating questions as signals of trust and safety. You’ll hear practical examples ranging from kindergarten nerves to shots and other “hard things,” plus how to debrief afterward so kids learn, “I survived that,” which is the foundation of resilience. We also tackle the bigger fears kids absorb from news, social media, bullying, violence, and uncertainty. Our approach is honest and age-appropriate: talk about what’s real, admit what we don’t know, and point kids toward helpers, community, and actions they can take. For Christian families, we discuss how to encourage trust in God through stories, prayer practice, and service without resorting to shallow answers. Stop Bullying With A Calm Brain:How Parents & Teachers Can Help Kids Report Bullying Safely

Send us Fan Mail Bullying rarely ends with a clever comeback, it ends when a kid finally feels safe enough to tell the truth and an adult actually steps in. We talk through what keeps children silent, including fear of retaliation, shame, and the painful experience of being brushed off with “work it out.” When kids don’t feel safe, their brains can’t focus, learn, or make good choices, so we treat safety as the bedrock, not a bonus.  Together, we share real stories and practical bullying prevention strategies for parents, teachers, and caregivers. We unpack why “stand up to the bully” can backfire and even teach “might makes right,” and we explain what works better: calm listening, quick advocacy, and a clear plan that brings a team around the child. We also get into how to build a culture that reduces bullying before it starts: consistent rules, active supervision, and adults modeling respect in everyday moments. We discuss cliques and exclusion, how peer culture can shut bullying down, and why home-school communication matters, especially when cyberbullying and social media spill conflict across every setting. Finally, we tackle the hard question of what to do when you find out your child is the one bullying, including consequences, increased supervision, and guiding them toward insight and empathy. Bullying Is About Power, Not Just Mean Words: Recognizing Bullying and What Parents Can Do

Send us Fan Mail Bullying rarely looks like the movie version, and that’s exactly why it can do so much damage before an adult ever notices. We start a new Brain-Based Parenting series by getting painfully specific about what bullying is and what it is not, so you can stop guessing and start seeing the patterns that matter: intentional harm, repetition, and a power imbalance. Today we walk through the major types of bullying parents and caregivers need to recognize: physical bullying that can be subtle, verbal bullying that sticks for years, social bullying that weaponizes exclusion, and cyberbullying that follows kids home through group chats, anonymous apps, and constant notifications. We also tackle hazing and why “initiation” often equals humiliation, especially when a child’s need to belong gets used against them. Then we shift to practical parenting: warning signs your child might be targeted, how to tell normal peer conflict from one-sided bullying, why some bullies look like angels around adults, and how social media changes the speed and scale of harm. If you want clearer bullying prevention tools, better conversations at home, and a stronger sense of what to do next, this one will help. When Kids Fight: How Adults Step In Without Making It Worse

Send us Fan Mail Kid conflict can flip a room from calm to chaos in seconds and the hardest part is knowing whether to step in, stay out, or slow everything down. We talk through what to look for when a disagreement turns into a real conflict, including the “emotional temperature” check: can they regulate, stay respectful, and disengage, or are they escalating into sarcasm, personal attacks, and dysregulation? We share practical conflict resolution tools for parents, teachers, and caregivers who want safer, more respectful outcomes. That includes intervening early when you see power imbalances or a history of escalation, bringing in other adults when the story has missing pieces or safety is involved, and handling sibling conflict with a mix of supervision and skill-building. We also dig into why coaching works best before the blowup, using modeling, role play, rehearsal, and simple “game film” reflection after you’ve observed what really happened. You’ll also hear language kids can use to stand up for themselves without pouring gasoline on the problem, like curiosity-based statements and clear boundaries. We close with what adults should avoid doing in heated moments, from intimidating body language to emotion-invalidation, and why staying neutral is often the difference between stopping a fight and actually resolving it. Calm In The Middle Of Conflict: Conflict Can Build Trust When You Repair.

Send us Fan Mail Conflict at home can feel like a five-alarm fire, but it’s often a clue about something deeper: a need, a fear, or a value getting rubbed the wrong way. We sit down to talk conflict and conflict resolution through a brain-based parenting lens, starting with the real-life ways people respond under stress, fight, flight, freeze, or even the “pause” that buys us time to choose a better response. Today we unpack what conflict actually is, when it helps, and when it harms. We explore how respectful disagreement can build clarity and strengthen relationships, while disrespect and malintent can do lasting damage. Along the way, we connect the dots between conflict and core human needs like safety, belonging, and purpose, and why our emotional brain takes over the moment we feel threatened. We also get practical about kids and teens. We talk why young kids fight when they can’t communicate, why elementary-age kids collide with new expectations and new value systems at school, and why teen conflict is so intense when independence, embarrassment, and fear are in the driver’s seat. Then we compare sibling conflict versus peer conflict, what “normal” sibling rivalry looks like, red flags like power imbalances and missing repair, and interventions that help, including supervision, curiosity, and making space for one-on-one connection.
