"I carried my friend while he died...."

At 19, he was serving in the army when his best friend was killed. He carried him as he was dying. He couldn't save him. But as he tells it, that wasn't the hardest part. The hardest part came at the funeral, walking up to his friend's mother and saying "I'm sorry I didn't do better." In this conversation he opens up about grief, guilt, counseling, and what it did to his relationship with death — and he shares something that stayed with me: he's never really talked about any of this. Not with his family. Not with his friends. Not because he doesn't want to, but because nobody has the courage to ask. That's what this whole project is about. The conversations we avoid are usually the ones that need having. ⏱ CHAPTERS 0:00 What's the hardest thing you've overcome? 1:06 "I was a kid. I didn't know how to handle it." 2:06 His advice for anyone in deep grief 2:42 What counseling actually gave him 3:36 How it changed his relationship with death 4:34 "I should mourn, I should cry" — letting go of forcing it 5:40 Does he still fear death? 6:27 Seeing more of the magic in things 7:42 What he's still carrying, and what he isn't 8:42 "Nobody has the courage to ask" 9:31 The conversations families never have 12:15 Why the avoided conversation shapes every other one 💬 If you're carrying grief right now, please don't go through it alone.
