But around this person, something changes. You start overexplaining, questioning your judgment, agreeing when you don't actually agree, or walking away wishing you'd said what you really thought. What if it's not a confidence problem? What if you're giving someone else more authority than you're giving yourself? The Gray Zone: How High Achievers Make Better Decisions Without Blowing Everything Up

Send a text with a question you want answered on a podcast episode!! When something in your business, career, leadership, or life stops working, it can be easy to jump to extremes: Sell the business or keep suffering. Leave the career or force yourself to push through. Burn it all down or stay exactly where you are. But what if those aren’t actually your only options? In this episode of The Magnetic Leader Podcast, executive and leadership coach Lisa Jeffs explores black-and-white thinking in high achievers and leaders and why stress, burnout, resentment, changing values, and uncertainty can make extreme decisions feel like the only decisions available. Lisa shares the story of a CEO who believed she had two choices: sell the business she had built or continue running it in a way that was exhausting her. Once they looked more closely at what she actually wanted, a very different set of possibilities emerged. That’s the gray zone: the space beyond either/or thinking where better decisions, deeper clarity, and more aligned options become visible. In this episode, you’ll learn: Why high achievers and leaders can default to black-and-white thinking under pressureHow burnout can distort the way you see your optionsWhy wanting more freedom doesn’t necessarily mean you need to leave your business or careerHow changing values can affect your definition of successWhy resentment can be useful information about what needs to changeHow to separate the real problem from the drastic solution your mind has attached to itQuestions to ask yourself before making a major business, career, or life decisionWhy the most courageous decision isn’t always the most dramatic oneIf you’re caught between two options and neither one feels right, ask yourself: What am I actually trying to solve? That question may open an entirely different path. Explore The Magnetic Leader Accelerator If you’re in a season where your old definition of success no longer fits and you want greater clarity around your values, identity, direction, and what you actually want next, explore The Magnetic Leader Accelerator. Too Agreeable? How People-Pleasing Erodes Your Authority as a Leader

Send a text with a question you want answered on a podcast episode!! Ever left a meeting thinking, why didn’t I just say what I actually meant? You knew what you thought. But you softened it, presented your decision like a suggestion, or agreed in the moment only to feel resentful afterward. That isn’t necessarily your personality. It may be a protective pattern that learned keeping the peace, avoiding disappointment, or making everyone comfortable was safer than being direct. In this episode, executive coach Lisa Jeffs explains when being collaborative and easygoing starts costing you authority. You’ll learn how to recognize the language and body signals that show you’ve moved out of your natural authority and into a protective response—and what to do before you automatically backtrack, over-explain, or give your authority away. Lisa also shares practical language you can use when someone challenges you, disagrees with your decision, or puts you on the spot, so you can stay connected to what you believe without becoming harder, colder, or louder. In this episode: The everyday phrases that can quietly weaken your authorityWhy you present decisions like suggestions or ask for consensus when it isn’t neededThe difference between thoughtful diplomacy and abandoning what you know to keep the room comfortableWhy “I’m just easygoing” may be a protective identity rather than your personalityHow childhood roles, conflict, guilt, and being praised for keeping the peace can shape your leadership patternsThe physical signs that tell you your protective response has taken overWhy many leaders aren’t afraid of making the wrong decision—they’re afraid of the emotional reaction it may createHow over-explaining can become an unconscious request for permissionWhat to say when you need time, disagree, or aren’t ready to make a decisionHow to pause, come back to yourself, and ask, “What do I actually think here?”Why authority is not about controlling the room, but about not losing yourself in itWho this episode is for: CEOs, founders, executives, senior leaders, sales professionals, and highly sensitive or empathic leaders who know they’re capable but find themselves softening, over-accommodating, or backing down when tension enters the room. Your sensitivity is not the problem. The work is learning to remain connected to yourself when someone disagrees, feels disappointed, or needs time to process. How to Stop Over-Explaining in Meetings: What I Tell CEOs in Private Coaching Sessions

Send a text with a question you want answered on a podcast episode!! Ever walked out of a meeting thinking, why did I say so much? You're not alone, and it's probably not the communication problem you think it is. In this episode, executive coach Lisa Jeffs shares what she actually tells CEOs and senior leaders in private coaching sessions about over-explaining in meetings. You'll learn why over-explaining is a protective behavior rather than a skill gap, what long answers are doing to your executive presence, and how to be more concise in meetings without rehearsing scripts or memorizing frameworks. You'll also get the CLEAR tool, the in-the-moment method Lisa's clients use to catch the over-explaining pattern while it's happening, so you can stop over-explaining at work starting with your very next meeting. In this episode: Why do I over-explain? The real reason smart leaders talk too much in meetingsThe four-minute answer that should have taken ten secondsHow over-explaining hurts your executive presence and how boards actually read long answersWhy stopping after your answer signals authority and confidence in leadershipThe CLEAR tool, step by step: a practical way to be more concise in meetingsWhat changed for one CEO after three seconds of silenceWho this episode is for: CEOs, founders, executives, and senior leaders who want stronger executive presence, better leadership communication, and more influence in high-stakes meetings. How to Be Respected at Work (Stop Losing Authority in Conversations)

Send a text with a question you want answered on a podcast episode!! If you’ve ever been overlooked, second-guessed, or passed up by someone who isn’t as capable as you, this episode will probably resonate.  This isn’t about your skill or how good you are at what you do. It’s about what’s happening in the moments where people decide whether they trust you to lead. A lot of high-performing people lose respect in subtle ways... they soften in conversations, over-explain decisions, or leave room for things to be negotiated when they shouldn’t be. They’re trying to be easy to work with… accommodating.  …but that’s often the exact moment their authority  In this episode, I walk through what people are actually picking up on when they decide if they respect you or not, and how small shifts in how you show up can change that quickly. We talk about:  why being liked and being respected aren’t the same thing  how follow-through and self-trust shape how seriously people take you  where your standards and boundaries might be getting lost  how to be clear and direct without becoming cold or harsh If you know you’re operating at a high level but it’s not being reflected back to you, this will help you see why, and what to change. If you want support with this, you can book a Test Drive Consult at lisajeffs.com. We’ll look at what’s actually happening in your specific situations and give you a specific road map to move forward.  Support the show Enjoyed this episode?
