Clayface: A Horror Movie Without the Horror

This week, I'm diving into Clayface, the latest DC Studios release, and asking whether taking the superhero genre in a more horror-inspired direction is actually the change DC needs. Unfortunately, I came away feeling pretty underwhelmed. While there's an interesting concept at the heart of the film, particularly its exploration of fame, beauty, identity and the entertainment industry's obsession with appearances, I found the execution lacking in almost every department. From an incredibly rushed fall from fame and underdeveloped character motivations to some questionable writing, bizarre tonal shifts and a horror element that never quite delivers, there's a lot I wanted to love but ultimately couldn't. Is this a misunderstood experiment or simply a missed opportunity? Let's discuss. I'm also kicking off November's Songs of the Week, with three tracks I'm particularly obsessed with: 'Embarrassingly' by Troye Sivan, 'Here You Come, There You Go' by Gracie Abrams from the upcoming deluxe edition of Daughter from Hell, and Phoebe Bridgers' contribution to the Prime Time soundtrack. Expect some acoustic heartbreak, unexpected punk influences and a whole lot of appreciation for interesting production. As always, you can find the monthly Songs of the Week playlists on Spotify! Revisiting 1989: Pop Perfection, Harry Styles and Blank Space

It's time for another Taylor Swift rewind, and this week we're celebrating the one and only 1989 as we approach its anniversary! I'm revisiting what I consider Taylor's best album, looking back at the era that transformed her into a full-blown pop superstar, from the move to New York and the media circus surrounding her relationship with Harry Styles to the genius of reclaiming her own public image with Blank Space. We’re talking synth-pop perfection, the cultural impact of the album, and why 1989 was such a masterclass in crafting a cohesive pop record without sacrificing the emotional storytelling that makes Taylor Taylor. From Style and Out of the Woods to the criminally underrated All You Had to Do Was Stay, I'm going track by track through the original album, the deluxe tracks and the vault songs that gave us even more insight into this iconic era. Is there a single skip on this album? I certainly don't think so. Plus, I'm wrapping up October with my Songs of the Week, featuring Bad Girl July, Wish Upon You, and Heart for Eyes by Love Spells. As always, you can find all my monthly picks on the The Overshare Pamphlet Songs of the Week playlist on Spotify. Get ready for a lot of 1989 appreciation, some Harry Styles lore, and me reminding you why this album remains undefeated in my personal Taylor Swift rankings. Digger Is Getting Dragged, But I Get It

This week, I'm talking about Digger, the new Tom Cruise film that's been getting dragged by critics — and, for once, I'm here to defend a movie that seemingly everyone else has a problem with. What starts off looking like a story about a billionaire oil tycoon quickly turns into something much stranger, with a twist that completely reframes the film and a satirical, almost theatrical approach that I found genuinely refreshing. I get into the film's many layers, its surprisingly brilliant cinematography, Tom Cruise's performance, and why I think the criticism that it's too sympathetic towards corporate CEOs misses some of the bigger points it's trying to make. Spoilers ahead! We get into the film's biggest reveals and its commentary on climate change, corporate greed, political hypocrisy, and our own complicity in the systems destroying the planet. Plus, it's time for Songs of the Week! I'm talking about Remi Wolf's new album Mud—including my current favourites, “Champagne” and “Burn Blue”—alongside new music from Slayyyter and songs by Dora Jar and Ruby Roberts. As always, you can find all my picks in the monthly playlist on Spotify by searching for The Overshare Pamphlet. See you next Monday at 6am UK time!
