Renovating the Soul

Alexandria Robinson

I started Renovating the Soul because I believe in something that took me a long time to say plainly: you already have what you need. The tools are not hidden. They are sitting right in front of you. But you have to pick them up. That means truth. Honesty. Self-reflection. Hard conversations. Admitting mistakes. Acknowledging wrongs. Distancing from what is keeping you small. It means things you won't even know you need to do until you face them. None of it is easy. But all of it is available to you. The foundation you were given wasn't your choice. Rebuilding is. This is not a podcast about having it all together. It's about the real, unglamorous, ongoing work of becoming. Faith, identity, relationships, generational patterns, purpose, discipline — all of it, honestly. Your soul is your home. Let's make it a place you want to live. 🎙 Hosted by Alexandria Robinson · Subscribe and start the renovation.

Why Your Family and Friends Don't Support You Like Strangers Do | Ep. 27

Strangers can find your work, celebrate it, and even say it changed their life, yet the people who have known you the longest say nothing. If you’ve ever felt that hollow, specific kind of hurt, I’m holding space for it, and then I’m asking us to slow down before we label it as hate. I start by defining support the real kind, the bearing-weight kind, the showing-up kind and why we keep confusing it with social media engagement. Then I unpack the internet vocabulary we reach for when we feel ignored: lurker, monitoring spirit, hater. Words matter because definitions matter, and missing your post is not the same as rooting for your failure. A lot of what we call “hate” may be indifference, confusion, or a perception gap, and treating everything like opposition can turn neutral people into enemies. From there, I walk through several reasons your friends and family might not engage: they may still see the old version of you, they may not be your audience, and they may struggle to receive you as an “expert” because that’s not the relationship dynamic you built together. I also challenge the harder possibility that the online version of us and the real-life version of us don’t always match, and people pull back when they sense that disconnect. If this topic hits a nerve, press play and sit with the questions I leave you with. Subscribe to Renovating the Soul, share this with someone building in public, and leave a review with your take: what else could be true about their silence? Stop Waiting for a Sign: Why You Don't Need Another Message to Move Forward | Ep. 26

The “next message” feels so convincing. The next sermon will make it click. The next prophecy will confirm it. The next podcast will finally calm the anxiety and tell us exactly what to do. But what if that pattern is the very reason we stay stuck? We get honest about how easy it is to confuse constant input with real growth. I define what I mean by a message, share my own complicated relationship with church prophecy and confirmation-seeking, and unpack how the internet turns guidance into an endless stream. We talk about the self-help and transformation industry, the subtle sales pitch that your breakthrough is one more purchase away, and why that hook hits hardest when life feels uncertain. Along the way, I challenge the habit of reading every obstacle as a sign to stop, because sometimes it is not a message at all. It is just life. The turning point is learning to return to your evidence: the receipts of what you have survived, chosen, built, and learned. When you stop outsourcing interpretation of your life to experts, signs, or algorithms, your nervous system gets quieter and your confidence gets stronger. Healing starts to look like earned self-trust, not perfect certainty. If this resonates, listen through and then share it with someone who keeps waiting for confirmation. You Were Built for Hard Things: The Difference Between Hard, Uncomfortable, and Impossible | Ep. 25

Hard things are not a sign you’re doing life wrong. They’re often the first evidence that something real is being built. I start by naming a problem I see everywhere, including in myself: we call something “hard” when it is actually uncomfortable, inconvenient, or demanding discipline. Once we separate hard vs impossible vs uncomfortable, the fog clears and we can stop using our feelings as final proof. Then I bring receipts from biology and history. Your body adapts under pressure through strength-building processes like muscle repair and neuroplasticity, and it was designed to handle acute stress when it’s paired with recovery. From there, I spotlight stories that make the message undeniable: Wilma Rudolph turning childhood polio into Olympic gold, Sarah Blakely building Spanx with $5,000 and relentless persistence, and Melody Hobson using fear of poverty to fuel a groundbreaking career in finance. These are not “special humans”; they’re humans who stayed in the work. We also confront the polished excuses that keep us stuck: quitting mid-hard and calling it “alignment,” using “waiting on God” to avoid responsibility, assuming wealth always equals corruption, and falling into the modern comfort trap where convenience becomes a cushion. I talk about failure, rejection, and the shame spiral that makes one setback last a whole season, plus the difference between rest that restores and rest that keeps you comfortable. If you’ve been telling yourself you’re not the kind of person who can do hard things, press play and let’s challenge that story together. Subscribe, share this with a friend who needs a push, and leave a review so more people can find Renovating the Soul. Why You'll Never Be Fully Healed (and Why That's the Point) | Ep. 24

Healing culture promises freedom, but a lot of us end up more tense, more self-conscious, and more afraid to live. I am Alexandria Robinson, and I am naming the pattern I see everywhere: we stack up therapy, journaling, prayer, meditation, and “self-work” and still stay triggered by the same people, repeating the same relationship cycles, and carrying the same pain in a new outfit. We get honest about why it happens. Healing tools are not the problem, but they can become bandages we never change. We talk about the signs of being stuck, the trap of performing growth, and the ways spirituality, religion, and even therapy can turn into symptom management when we will not confront the deeper root. The shift that changes everything is moving from “what happened to me?” to “who am I becoming?”, because awareness without action is just another loop. I also get personal, walking through a broken engagement, the 40 days I spent trying to "fast" my way to healing before graduation, and the year afterward that I now consider one of my biggest regrets. I break down what I thought was healing at the time (praying, journaling, staying busy, distance) versus what actually ended up helping me, which was confrontation: saying the hard things out loud instead of managing the symptoms while ignoring the root. If you've done "all the things" and still feel stuck, or if you've ever told yourself you'll be ready once you're finally healed, this conversation is for you. Important Note Before You Listen: This episode includes a brief reference to a passive suicidal thought experienced during a period of emotional distress, as well as descriptions of anxiety and panic attacks. Your Body Has Been Trying to Tell You Something: Functional Health with Dr. Shalli Deyo | Ep. 23

Dr. Shalli Deyo spent over 20 years as a pharmacist before she stopped trusting the system she worked inside. Two sons with compounding health conditions, a medicine cabinet full of things that weren't solving anything, and eventually, a decade of watching food and gut health do what prescriptions couldn't. That journey is what brought her to functional medicine, and eventually, to this conversation. Alexandria and Dr. Shalli get into what functional medicine actually looks at and why conventional medicine keeps missing it, the elimination diet and how it works in practice, the gut-brain connection and what it means for focus, mood, and inflammation, and why the symptoms most people brush off as normal are often early warning signs worth paying attention to. Alexandria talks about going through Dr. Shalli's program with her husband, the grumpiness of the elimination phase, the grocery store tour that changed how she reads a label, and why her seven-year-old now interrogates every item they put in the cart. Dr. Shalli talks about what she sees with couples, the pattern of women wanting to make changes while their partners resist, and why waiting until something is seriously wrong is the most expensive approach to health there is. If you've ever felt like your doctor was managing you rather than helping you, or if you've normalized symptoms you've had so long you forgot they weren't supposed to be there, this is for you. More energy, clearer thinking, a plan you can actually follow — it's all on the table. Why We Homeschool: What Nobody Tells You About Educating Your Kids at Home | Ep. 22

Outsourcing your child’s formation sounds normal until you blink and realize you don’t recognize who they’re becoming. I’m Alexandria Robinson, and I’m walking you through why our family chose homeschooling, not as a trendy identity, but as a conviction about parenting, responsibility, and the long game of raising future adults. I unpack the biggest homeschooling myths head-on: “homeschool kids are weird”, “they won’t have friends”, “I don’t have patience”, “I can’t teach”. Then I share the real-life stories behind our decision, including what I experienced in public school as a kid, what I saw when I worked around schools, and why bullying, violence, and age-inappropriate exposure aren’t rites of passage we should accept as inevitable. We also talk about how often families try other options first, what daycare and private pre-K taught us, and why “the school will handle it” can quietly turn into parents living in reaction mode. You’ll also hear what a structured online homeschool can look like day-to-day, from curriculum support and progress tracking to recordkeeping, PE and fine arts requirements, clubs, meetups, and ways to build real homeschool socialization through neighborhood life and sports. I end with a simple metaphor: parents are the general contractor, schools are the subcontractors, and the foundation is still on us. This one will hit differently if you have kids, if you were shaped by your school experience in ways you are still untangling, or if you have ever wondered whether the way things have always been done is actually working. But the content could benefit ANYONE for sure.  Important Note Before You Listen: This episode contains a brief reference to explicit content discussed in the context of childhood exposure in school settings Resources Mentioned: For More Information About Enlightium & to Sign Up for a Virtual Open House: Referral Link Enlightium Academy (online homeschool curriculum, pre-K through high school) Text Me and Share Your Thoughts Support the show Subscribe and let’s continue the work of Renovating the Soul, one tough conversation at a time. 📢 Join the Conversation: Find me on Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, and TikTok—@renovatingthesoulpod—and drop your thoughts under the episode post. Applied to 20+ Law Schools and Got Rejected From All of Them | Ep. 21

More than 20 rejections. Not one acceptance. And somehow, the hardest part is not the “no” itself; it is the shame that tries to make you whisper about it. I’m Alexandria, and I’m sharing the part of the story we usually skip: not getting into law school after going all in. I walk through the law school application process from the inside, what it’s like to study for the LSAT as a wife and mom of four, and why a single score can start to feel like a judgment on your entire life. We talk about rejection as dismissal, the kind that feels personal even when it isn’t, and how “holistic review” can still come with an unspoken floor. We also zoom out, because this is not only about law school. It’s about the patterns rejection exposes: choosing the safe route, talking ourselves out of hard things, and avoiding critique because we’re terrified of finding out we’re not naturally great. I share what actually helped me grow, including the simple but brutal practice of tracking mistakes, learning from them, and watching competence build in real time. Then we land in the messy middle, where the renovation is happening but the finished room isn’t visible yet. If you’re in a fresh disappointment after a layoff, a closed door, or a goal that did not work out, I hope this gives you language, permission, and a next step. What If You're Not Lost At All | Ep. 20

Alexandria comes back to the mic for Season 3 with something she hasn't fully said yet: the last year was hard, and she's still in the very messy middle of it: You can be hurting and still not be lost. That’s the line we keep coming back to as I tell the truth about a year that did not go to plan: leaving ministry and watching friendships go silent, losing my job, applying and hearing nothing back, getting rejected from schools after putting in the work, then landing in a role I didn’t expect again, a stay-at-home mom of four boys, staring at the sink and wondering what comes next.  What changed wasn’t a sudden “happy ending”. It was one question that stopped the spiral: what if I’m not lost at all? From there, we talk about reframing, not as denial, but as a grounded mental health practice. I share how shame and self-blame creep in when you treat a brutal job market, competitive admissions, or other people’s choices as a verdict on your worth, and how naming the grief of lost community helps you stop carrying what was never yours.  We also get practical with a framework I love: investigating and interrogating your emotions. Think of it as emotional inspection and deeper questioning. The spider analogy makes it simple: the fear is real, but the interpretation may be wrong. When you balance emotion with reason, emotions become data, not a sentence you hand to yourself.  If you’re in a life transition, the renovation metaphor will land: a gutted house looks like failure without context, but mid-demo is often where the real work begins. Subscribe to Renovating the Soul, share this with someone in the messy middle, and leave a review with the question you’re choosing to ask yourself next. Important Note!
