Didn't See That Coming

Emily VinZant, MD

Welcome to Didn't See That Coming, a podcast dedicated to all the things that your Mom never could have warned you about. If you have ever felt unraveled or unfulfilled by unexpected life circumstances, events, or the path you chose, then this podcast is for you! On this podcast, I am here to help you find strength to reset and use that strength in your reset to drop the old stories that got you there and become who you were always meant to be. I'm Dr. Emily VinZant, an Obesity Medicine and Family Medicine physician and certified Life & Weight Loss coach, and I'm on a mission to help you stop beating yourself up about the way things "should" have been and create a strong foundation to embrace the path you are on. I'm walking that path myself and this podcast is my brave documentation of my journey. I'm sharing my unique toolset of medicine, psychology, self-help, self-improvement, and faith (with lots of vulnerability!) so you know you are not alone, that it can end up better, and that unraveling is just part of the journey to the life you desire. Each week you will hear from me and my loved ones as we unravel the things we didn't see coming from kids leaving the home, empty bank accounts, and endless to-do lists, to exhaustion, anxiety, irritability, measuring up, and unexpected separation anxiety with a 5-year-old. You'll learn how I used all of my tools through life's scenarios to create a firm foundation for the legacy I want to leave behind. And listen as it is done imperfectly, in real time, with lots of laughs and tears. You will leave this podcast feelings seen, heard, and connected with all the humans who go through this, too. My ask of you? Share EACH podcast episode you love (just copy the link!) with ONE other human who you can be brave and vulnerable with. Let's create a movement of love, acceptance, and a firm foundation together!

Why Learning Something New Is Good for Your Mental Health

What if one of the best things you could do for your mental health was to become a beginner at something? In this episode of The Healthy Me Reset, I'm joined by Alice O'Connell, founder of Learn to Knit Online, to explore how creative hobbies like knitting and cross-stitching can help us slow down, manage stress, and rediscover the joy of learning something new. Alice discovered knitting while working as an actress and eventually turned her passion into a way to help others. She shares how knitting became a source of comfort and connection during her breast cancer treatment, and why she believes the process of learning a new skill can be just as valuable as the finished product. We also talk about perfectionism, the pressure women put on themselves to be good at everything, and how embracing the messy beginner stage can help us develop greater confidence and self-compassion. Whether you've always wanted to learn to knit, have a creative hobby you've neglected, or simply need a healthier way to unwind, this conversation is a reminder that you don't have to be good at something to benefit from doing it. In This Episode 0:02:03 A Knitting Journey That Started in Adulthood 0:05:13 Embrace the Messy Beginner 0:09:48 Knitting Through Breast Cancer 0:13:42 Crafting Through Life's Challenges 0:20:16 Swap Scrolling for Something Nourishing 0:23:35 Take Beginner Frustration One Stitch at a Time 0:27:00 Find Your Way to Learn to Knit   A Few Takeaways You don't have to be perfect to enjoy the process. Learning something new requires patience, and those early mistakes are part of building confidence and resilience. Creative hobbies can offer a welcome break from stress. Repetitive, hands-on activities like knitting and cross-stitching may help you feel more grounded and give you a chance to slow down. Small moments count. You don't need hours of free time or expensive supplies. Even 10 or 20 minutes spent learning or creating can become a meaningful part of your day. It's never too late to be a beginner. Trying something unfamiliar can open the door to new interests, connections, and a little more joy in everyday life.
