The man my father trusted: Groomed and assaulted by a trusted and reputable family friend

Jeremy Indika founder of Something to Say Official, presents his story. When Jeremy was 8 years old when his father allowed a trusted friend and colleague, to stay in their home after his parents’ divorce. The man appeared kind and respectable, gaining the family’s trust. Behind that image, he groomed and assaulted Jeremy. The process was so subtle and calculated that, even as an adult, Jeremy cannot clearly remember how it began, only that the man became familiar, trusted, and normal in his life before abusing that trust. Years later, after an attempted police prosecution, Jeremy discovered where the man lived. Searching for answers and closure, he confronted the situation himself and ended up being charged. His experience shows how abuse often hides behind trust and respectability, leaving survivors with confusion and unanswered questions long after the abuse ends. From One Abuse to Another - June's Story

Elizabeth June, known as June, grew up as the daughter of a single mother. Because her mother had to work, June was often left in the care of other families. During this time, she experienced sexual abuse from older children in those households, so frequent that she began to believe such behaviour was normal. At just 12 years old, a family friend, a grown male she trusted, sexually abused when he stayed over. Two years later, at age 14, the abuse was repeated by the father of a friend, a trusted psychologist, and a church minister. Frozen in fear, June felt completely distraught and alone. Tragically, her suffering did not end there; later, she raped by a married minister, another family friend whom she had trusted. June’s story is a heart-breaking example of how abuse can come from those who are meant to protect and care for children. It highlights the urgent need for awareness, vigilance, and safe spaces for children, as well as the importance of believing survivors and providing them with support and justice.
