    An Immigrant’s Secret: Superpowers, Gossip, and Hidden Truths with Author Natasha Tynes

    My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Natasha Tynes, author of the book Karma Unleashed. Natasha Tynes is a Jordanian-American author and communications professional who owns and operates a digital media agency, Suburban Media Group. She has over twenty years of experience working as a journalist, writer and social media manager. She’s a regular contributor to a number of publications inside and outside the United States. Her work has appeared in the Washington Post, Nature Magazine, Elle Magazine, The Post, Esquire magazine, and Aljazeera, among others and she’s appeared on shows like Larry King Live and CBS’s Morning Show.   She also hosts the podcast, Read and Write with Natasha, where she talks with authors, publishers, and book marketers around the world. She’s a fiction writer too.   In my book review, I stated Karma Unleashed is a contemporary novel by Natasha Tynes. We meet Karma, a young woman from Bilaq Iran who has a gift - or a curse - depending on how you look at it. She can often see the future. She quickly learns that others do not understand her gift. Her mother teaches her to keep it hidden. However, hard as she tries, Karma often feels the need to intervene, especially when the vision is tragic. Inevitably, this leads to misunderstandings and even danger.   She moves to America to start a new life with her husband, but soon, everything she understands about life is turned upside down. She meets Danielle who seems to know of Karma's power and also appears to have a darker side. Karma must decide to run from her gift or embrace it no matter where it leads. The twist at the end has left me a bit unsettled - and almost certain there will be a sequel!   My biggest takeaway? I don't want to know the future. Not mine or anyone else's. And if I could see the future, the likelihood is that I couldn't change it.     Women's Liberation and First Love: A Life in Transition with Author Cinda Gault

    My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Cinda Gault, author of the book Everything I Hope For. Cinda has demonstrated an enduring interest in women’s lives. An undergraduate degree in Psychology led to her founding an agency to help victims of domestic violence. She followed up a stint as a prison guard with an M.A. in Criminology focused on domestic violence. Inspired to become a writer and learn about the literary tradition she wanted to join, she completed a doctoral dissertation on Canadian women’s writing during the “identity years” of 1965-1980.   In 1988, she published her first novel as a Harlequin Superromance set in Guelph. Her first historical novel, This Godforsaken Place, was published in 2015. In between these novels, she won third prize in an international short story contest, earned a Ph.D. in English, and raised two sons. In 2023, she published A Small Compass, welcomed two granddaughters, and has a new novel, Everything I Hope For, set in the 1970s.   In my book review, I stated Everything I Hope For is a young adult late 20th century historical fiction by Cinda Gault. Although it is difficult for me to believe that 1970s is now historical, Cinda does an excellent job thrusting us into the world of Jesus Freaks and hippies.   In this coming of age story, we meet Belinda who is a senior in high school who has always been a good student and honest with her parents - especially her open-minded mother. But as her parents' relationship disintegrates and Belinda begins dating, everything she thought to be true about her relationship with her mother turns upside down. At seventeen, she finds herself on her own and making adult choices she's not quite ready to make.   We watch as she navigates familial bonds, romance, lust, friendship, higher education, finding a job, and true love. I loved her bold personality despite the limitations set on women of the day.   We also meet modern Kaitlyn who was given an old key that has been passed down through the generations. This key, she is told, will bless her and her posterity. When she finds a letter that gives her more information about the key, she decides to go to England to investigate. What starts out as curiosity is soon laden with romance, mystery, and potential murder.   The romance will keep you smiling. The history will keep you learning.     A Girl Who Hears Nature: A Story of Grace and Belonging with Author Carrie Birde

    My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Carrie Birde, author of the book A Small Tale of Uncommon Grace. Carrie Birde is a poet, artist, amateur photographer, and author of the debut novel, “A Small Tale of Uncommon Grace”. She reads of a wide range of genres, with particular interest in mythology, folk tales, and fairy tales. Like many of the women in those stories, she has friendships extending beyond the boundaries of species, among these several generations of Gray Catbirds, a kerfuffle of Eastern Chipmunks, a squad of Blue Jays, a singing Calico Cat, and a small, brown, Fey creature currently disguised as a dog. She lives with her husband and son in what she affectionately calls her “Boonton Bubble”.   In my book review, I stated A Small Tale of Uncommon Grace is a fantasy fairy tale by Carrie Birde. Although it is a fantasy, it read far more like a historical fiction with fantastical elements - and I loved it!   We meet Grace who is different from others, but no one knows just how different until she starts communicating with animals ... and then plants ... and even the wind! Rather than treat her as a witch, most people seem to adjust to her oddities until she helps a neighboring community and angers someone in the process.   The story is whimsical and causes you to think about life and the messages that might be waiting for you if you only stopped to listen for a while. It also made we think about how we treat those with differences. We meet Lucy at a ski resort. She's a beautiful, quiet Catholic girl who still lives with her parents. On that fateful day, she meets Sam, a handsome, Jewish soon-to-be doctor. They fall in love and Lucy embraces the Jewish faith and the ketubah - marriage contract - that will bind the two forever. However, she has no concerns because she knows God put them together for a reason.   Unfortunately, as with life, not everything goes as Lucy and Sam plan. When life gets tough, neither know the best way to handle their disappointments.   This is a beautiful story of love, loss, disappointment, fierce devotion, and redemption.
