The Return of the Pesto Comics Newsletter, Classic Flavour

Hey everyone, My name’s Adriano. I’m here from Pesto Comics. I’m the publisher, writer, fulfiller, whiner, complainer, cause of all the delays that you’ve been getting in getting your comics recently. And it’s actually why I haven’t been doing the newsletter for the past little while. And, you may notice if you’re looking for a video, there’s no video this time out. I’m going audio only, and there’s a good reason for this. One of the many reasons I haven’t been up to snuff with the newsletter of late is I’m falling behind on a number of projects. Big Smoke Pulp audiobook and wider release I’m still overdue to deliver the audiobook of Big Smoke Pulp Volume 2. It’s been recorded. Now I’m listening back to myself. It’s over 40 hours of myself trying and trying again and again to do a good job of actually reading out these stories. And a lot of times I had to look up words, making sure I was pronouncing them right and doing everything in the best possible quality I could. A few times I was really, really tempted to just use an AI voice or something like that, but I knew that wasn’t the right thing to do. I really needed to make sure that I was reading it out, adding the inflection, doing some acting (if you want to call it that.) Doing some acting with the characters and the dialogue, and really putting out the best version of that book I could. So that will be in the inboxes of the backers of Big Smoke Pulp very, very soon. I can’t wait to get that out. And then I am working on a plan to start releasing both Big Smoke Pulp Volume 1 and Volume 2 wide, both as digital copies, and to find a way to make it available on pestocomics.com for you to get a copy sent to your house through BookVault, or to download a digital copy on all of the various stores out there, including Amazon, Kobo, whatever you happen to use. I’m trying to get it everywhere. So a lot of work being done on the Big Smoke Pulp end of things. Naked Kaiju Woman fulfillment and missing shipment I’m also working on fulfilling Naked Kaiju Woman #3. I was so close to done on fulfilling this project. I sent a box of just over 100 copies of all kinds of comics to my fulfiller in the US at Gemini Comic Supply. They also have a service called Gemini Fulfillment, and that’s where everyone who orders from me that is within the continental US gets all of the copies of the newly printed books. So that’s Naked Kaiju Woman 3, and some reprints of Naked Kaiju Woman #1. Those are all printed at Comic Impressions in Florida. They’re shipped to California, where Gemini is. And then for all of the backlist issues of books, including Crazy Latte Thing Called Love and Stay Cool, Unlimited Udo, some of From Parts Unknown, those are all shipped directly from my stock here in Canada as I work through all of the extras that have printed over time. So that is a box that has to go cross-border. However, this time it didn’t quite make it. I got a notification on Friday, just before Halloween, that the box that they received in California was actually empty. So something happened between Canada Post and the United States Postal Service. One of those two emptied the box. It exploded from the side by the looks of it, and they did a haphazard job of re-taping it to keep it in the shape of a box, and just continued to deliver it and brought the empty box to Gemini in the US. So now I had to assemble all of these books again with what backstock I still had. Fortunately, I still have enough of everything, just enough in some cases, of everything to make sure that we fulfill everything with Naked Kaiju Woman #3 and SNIP three through five, which is another thing that I’m trying to catch up on. SNIP #3-5 update That’s going to be sent to the printers this week, so if you’re waiting on SNIP three through five, you’ll get those well before issues four and five hit the shelves. We’re racing to beat #3 as well, so it may hit at the same time that you could have bought it in stores. That was not the initial plan, but nothing’s been going to plan lately, and that’s really why I’ve been holding off on doing this newsletter. Refocusing the newsletter So when we’re talking about the newsletter in particular, one of the things that I’ve really been thinking about is I kind of lost the plot of what this newsletter was. I was having a lot of fun doing videos and trying the new format with YouTube and doing all of that business, and I kind of got into the optimization of YouTube and really trying to think of how to do well with YouTube instead of worrying about what you guys have enjoyed from the newsletter. I even did a bunch of polls trying to prove my point, where it’s like, do you guys watch video, listen to the audio, or read the newsletter. And overwhelmingly, it was you guys read it, then you listen to it, and maybe you watch the video. And that could have just been a matter of where the survey was, but even if you look at the subscriber numbers on YouTube versus the subscriber numbers from Substack, it’s 10X on Substack, so I should trust what the people on Substack are saying. So here I am. I’m doing the audio version. I use the transcript from this to actually write out the post. That is not a secret. It’s something I’ve been wide open about, but it is me. But I think now more than ever, you hearing my thoughts live as I speak, like I have a little outline of what I’m going to talk about each time, but then I just kind of riff. But I think this is a better way of proving that this is me. This is my authentic voice. It’s not some AI-generated newsletter that I just threw together and sent out. Not that I would do that. But I think you being able to hear my voice and hear me think it out and get some of the emotion does help beyond just me sending a text newsletter. I think you being able to actually follow along in the podcast form actually helps. And I know there’s a lot of people who just listen to the podcast, so I’m going to continue doing this. And frankly, I enjoy doing this. Even when I was writing the newsletter, I would use transcription to do it. I would speak it all out, and then I would edit it so that English was a lot better than what you would get in me rambling like I do now. Now you get a much more unvarnished take when you just listen to the audio. So I feel like I’m getting back on track, and I want to get back into this. I want to be talking to you as frequently as possible. I know I was talking about biweekly, and then I took six weeks off, and that’s kind of wild. That’s something I’m not going to do again. I’m going to do my best to come back here every week, at least every other week. Let’s see how it goes. But I’m really hoping to get back on a weekly schedule so you can depend on something in your feeds once a week. I know this episode here is coming out in the most random of times. But I really just wanted to get out there as soon as possible to let you know I’m getting back on top of it. I’m back. New schedule: Wednesdays at 9 AM Eastern So my goal is to have a new newsletter out every Wednesday, 9:00 AM Eastern Time. This way you have something to listen to on your train ride, or on your drive, or on your walk to your favorite comic shop. You can get a quick little update of everything that’s happening with Pesto Comics. Maybe I can remind you if we have books on the shelves, or we have an FOC coming up. So my goal is Wednesdays, 9:00 AM. And if there’s nothing Wednesdays at 9:00 AM, that’s because I may have skipped that week. But this is the goal. I’m going to aim to have something for you every week, even if it’s just an update of what’s going on with Pesto Comics and myself and all of this business that we’re doing. Even if it’s really short, I’m going to try my best to make sure that you have something in audio and written out, 9:00 AM Wednesday. This is the time we’re setting. I’m going to work on changing the headings and all of that stuff as well, just so that that’s consistent. Running and growing a micro-publisher The other thi… This is a public episode. Dealing with Bad Reviews

I did something that, as a writer, you’re never supposed to do. I read the reviews for my book From Parts Unknown. And I have to say -- some of those reviews were right. So let’s get into it. My name’s Adriano. I’m a writer here at Pesto Comics, and the publisher, and we get all kinds of books out there into the world. One of the series that is ending very soon in the direct market is From Parts Unknown. The first four issues are available widely. I’m not counting the Kickstarter run here, because I will say that the Kickstarter crowd is a totally different crowd. Everyone is there because they want to be there. If they have anything negative to say, they certainly keep it to themselves. When we get to the direct market, we are going wide. We are getting every type of person, and not everyone who took the risk knows what they’re getting into right away. So you do get a little bit more of a distilled opinion, where on Kickstarter people are going to be generally supportive. They’re there to support indie comics, warts and all. And I do appreciate those people. You people have made it so that I can get as far as I have, and I always, always appreciate the feedback I get. It does mean a lot. But I will say the direct market can be vicious. All that said, most of the reviews of From Parts Unknown have been wonderful. Everyone has really enjoyed the series. But there’s always that naysayer in there. You can get dozens of people saying how much they enjoy the book and one person who says they don’t -- and that’s the person that gets all of your energy. So I’m not here to fight the reviews. That’s not what we’re doing today. But I do want to talk about something that I think led to those less than generous reviews, and it’s because of something I did intentionally. Writing for the Trade vs the Issue So today I want to talk about writing for the trade or writing for the issue. That’s really the difference here. With From Parts Unknown, this was the first series I had tackled, and I had been coming off of writing one-shots. One-shots were basically my big, big ideas distilled into as little as 24 pages, up to 32 pages. But that was all the space I had to really get in, make my point, and get out. As a film school student who did a lot of short films, it felt very much in my wheelhouse to do. However, I still wanted a little bit more space to tell a story. So when I started writing From Parts Unknown, I didn’t think of it as an issue-per-issue exercise. This was always written for the trade. So the storytelling is decompressed. The storytelling takes a lot longer to get to the point, for lack of a better term. I did make sure that each issue did end on some kind of cliffhanger, that it was somewhat episodic, that there was a reason for you to come each week. But really, all of the meat of the story takes place in issues #4 and #5. And if you were reading issue #3, it may have felt like, “Okay, let’s get going.” I totally get that. That was slightly intentional. That said, if I were to start over, I may have changed the pacing a little bit to make it a little quicker. It’s something to keep in mind for the sequel series that we’ll be coming out with in 2027. I’ll make sure to really ratchet it up and keep the pace and the momentum going a lot faster than we did with the first series. But again, the idea was this was a short story told over five issues instead of one, and that may not have been what everybody was signing up for. So I totally get that. And again, those reviews were actually kind of constructive. Nobody was actively malicious about this. Everybody was just like, “Not my style of storytelling. I’ve had enough of Bendis-style storytelling. I don’t need more of it in my life.” And that’s fine. Not everything is for everyone, and I appreciate that input. I don’t resent the feedback. Like I said, it’s something I’ll be taking forward with me. However, I am capable of writing for the issue. Writing for the Issue - NKW Anyone who has read NKW, or Naked Kaiju Woman, knows that I’m capable of doing that. That series is very much written to be in a sequelized manner, is how I like to call it. Each issue stands on its own, but you certainly get more out of it if you’ve read issues #1 and #2 when you jump into issue #3, for instance. It was really written with that in mind -- that you can still get a full story not knowing the characters, not knowing the setting. You just jump in, enjoy the story, move on. So those are two totally different sides of the spectrum. And then there’s SNIP, that I think falls right in between. It’s not decompressed. It’s definitely written for the issue, and the story is told from beginning to end. But there’s a big story being told over the five issues that’ll probably read great in trade, but can also be read well as a single issue. That’s something that I hope those of you who have backed the Kickstarters know that I’m going for. So it’s really about being able to take these different disciplines and adapt based on the story you’re telling. New Ongoing Series Now, I’ve been working on some new stuff with a couple of artists that you’ve seen work with Pesto Comics in the past, and we’re not doing a five-issue mini this time. We’re doing something that is planned to be ongoing, for lack of a better term. We’re talking about two years, in some cases, worth of story. So it’s flexing an entirely different set of muscles. It’s making me think: “How, over 27 issues, over 30 issues, can I keep people engaged week after week after week, while still telling this huge meta story that goes over everything?” Knowing Your Story I think the important thing in all of this is to have a good idea of the story that you want to tell before you ever start it. You don’t necessarily have to know where you’re landing in the end. Me personally, I like to have everything outlined as much as possible so that at least I know where the story is heading as I’m writing. But at least you need to have a target that you want to hit, so that you can make sure that you’re getting there in time and with the proper pace -- so that people aren’t going to feel like they’re not getting enough for the money that they spent on your comic. Because at the end of the day, it’s a serialized medium. People are paying $5 for a story, not for a part of a story, or a story that goes between commercial breaks. They want something with a beginning, middle, and end. So I think knowing at least where you’re heading, knowing the ending, is very important if you’re going to tell a story. And then knowing how you want to tell it is also very important. Is it one story that you’re telling over many episodes? Is it many episodes that tell a large story? There’s a difference in there, even though it doesn’t really sound like it. I think the expectations that you set up with the reader will allow you to tell the different kinds of stories and how you might tell them. It’s something that frankly I’m still learning and still trying to get better at, and I hope that you’ll be along for the ride with me as I do it. As we continue to build this catalog of Pesto Comics, hopefully we build this into something where I’m not the only one telling stories -- where we can get writers with similar mindsets into this company and release their books as well. But right now, Pesto Comics, these are all stories coming from me. It’s something that I’m trying to grow into something hopefully much bigger, so that we can bring a lot of people under the tent. For now, I’m trying to tell all these different stories, and I’m doing my best to make sure that we’re pleasing as many people as we can as we do so. Leave a Review If you’ve read From Parts Unknown and you’ve enjoyed it, I encourage you to go on League of Comic Book Geeks, look up From Parts Unknown, and leave your review. Hopefully it’s a good one. If it’s not, that’s fine too. But if you’re going to do it, be kind. You can leave a bad score, but don’t be mean about it. Please leave a review of From Parts … This is a public episode. If you would like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit pestocomics.substack.com
