Why Am I Like This?!

Mental Breakdown

We are a therapist and a psychiatric nurse practitioner and we want to share a simplified view of these complex concepts that are often misunderstood, avoided, and even feared. This is a podcast about being human, adapting to life, and learning from our unique experience. We try to provide the answers to question: Why am I like this?

    Why Am I So Negative?!

Your brain can find a single awkward moment and treat it like the headline of your entire day. That’s negativity bias, and it’s not a character flaw, it’s a survival strategy that can get turned up by anxiety, perfectionism, and old learning from relationships and stress. We talk through what negativity bias looks like in real life: the mental replay at bedtime, the “I’m in danger” feeling in totally safe places, and the way one mistake can erase ten good things. Along the way, we tease apart anxiety versus intuition, how confirmation loops keep the threat detector firing, and why “feeling relief” after things go well can quietly block actual joy. We also get honest about the social side of negativity, like getting pulled into complaining or spiraling at work because it feels like connection, then walking away with guilt and shame. Then we move into what helps. We share tools that don’t require pretending everything is amazing: flexible gratitude practices that train your brain to notice safety, “name it to tame it” to create space from the loop, present-moment refocusing, and realistic reframes like “This is hard, and I can handle it.” We also cover rumination, mindful planning, and why skills still work even when the thoughts come back. If this resonates, listen through and try one small practice today. Subscribe, share with a friend who overthinks at night, and leave a rating and review so more people can find the show. Why Was I Always the Good Kid?!

Your body flinches, fawns, or freezes before you can even name the feeling and then your brain shows up late asking, “What just happened?” We’re digging into that “good kid” pattern: the one where you become the peacemaker, the helper, the easy one, and later you wonder why you feel responsible for everyone’s emotions while having no clue what you want or need. Laura Wood (trauma therapist) and Michaela Beaver (psychiatric nurse practitioner) bring both clinical insight and real-life honesty to the question so many of us carry: why am I like this?   We talk about “gifted” in the broader sense from The Drama of the Gifted Child not just high grades, but being emotionally attuned to adults, caretaking a parent, and learning that connection depends on performance. That can shape a nervous system that scans for danger and approval through neuroception, long before conscious thought kicks in. When love feels conditional, big emotions can start to feel dangerous, and the true self gets buried under what other people need from you.   We also connect the dots to adulthood: becoming the fixer, feeling like the therapist in every room, slipping into codependent dynamics, and finally hitting a wall where feelings show up as tears, numbness, or anxiety. From there we get practical and honest about healing: naming what happened without getting stuck in blame, grieving what you didn’t get, learning self-validation, and using repair instead of perfection especially when parenting triggers old wounds. If this hits close to home, listen through to the end and then subscribe, share with someone who needs it, and leave a rating and review so more people can find the show. Why Does My Body React Before My Brain?!

We talk about why the body can react before the brain, and how trauma gets stored as sensations and states instead of a clean story. We redefine trauma as overwhelm, connect it to adverse childhood experiences and chronic stress, and share ways to get grounded so you can respond with more choice.   • body-first reactions in real life, from blushing to going blank   • “flipping your lid” and why the prefrontal cortex goes offline   • cognitive, emotional, and sensory processing channels and what they are for   • emotional shutdown, dissociation, and the electric fence metaphor   • sensory numbing, athletic push-through culture, and survival responses   • ACEs study links between childhood stress and adult mental and physical health   • trauma as overwhelm beyond “big events,” including neglect and parentification   • fragmented memory, triggers, and why the hippocampus loses time context  • grounding and orientation skills to return to the present   • progressive muscle relaxation as a safety signal   • therapy as relational safety, plus EMDR reprocessing and “name it to tame it”  • practicing regulation daily, wise mind, and building self-compassion   If you like our show, please leave us a rating and review on your favorite podcast platform. Getting Help That Actually Fits!

We break down how to choose the right kind of mental health support when you’re not sure where to start and you’re tired of guessing. We explain how therapy, medication management, and functional or integrative psychiatry can work together to reduce symptoms and get closer to root causes.   • common barriers to getting help and why “who do I go to” is a real problem   • the difference between therapists, counselors, psychologists, psychiatrists, and psychiatric nurse practitioners   • why most people need separate providers for therapy and meds and what it looks like when one clinic coordinates care   • how CBT and DBT support stabilization before deeper trauma work like EMDR or ART   • using medication to lower symptom severity so you can actually do the work in therapy   • whole person mental health foundations including sleep, nutrition, movement, and inflammation   • functional psychiatry vs integrative psychiatry and what labs can and cannot tell you   • cost and insurance realities plus tips for choosing a plan that covers behavioral health   • genetic testing basics including CYP metabolism and how results can guide dosing   • what to expect in an intake, how treatment plans and goals get set, and why early sessions can feel technical   • how to use a free 15-minute consult to test fit and reduce fear of wasting energy   If you like our show, rate it on your favorite platform. Normal People With Normal Problems

We get personal about what it feels like to be sick, stressed, and dysregulated while still believing we have to keep performing. We unpack how the nervous system shapes our reactions and how self-compassion, repair, and a few practical tools can help us act more like the people we want to be.  • the belief that being sick means being weak or lazy  • naming the “story we’re telling ourselves” and how meaning-making drives shame  • apologising to get ahead of judgment and why it backfires  • parenting without making kids responsible for our regulation  • dissociation as a coping skill and when it helps or harms  • co-regulation basics like inviting instead of demanding and using consistent language  • the window of tolerance and why capacity drops under stress  • using simple body tools to come back into regulation  • recognising body-first reactions like flushing or gut responses  • people pleasing, rumination, and the “ice cream” overthinking spiral  • balancing repair with over-apologising and avoiding  • giving ourselves grace when we fall out of our values  we would love it if you could leave us a rating and review on your favorite podcast platform. Why Am I Stuck in A Loop?!

We unpack why OCD makes the brain feel stuck in a loop and why intrusive thoughts can create a real sense of impending doom. We explain what is happening in the brain and share practical steps for responding with more clarity and compassion.  • defining obsessive compulsive disorder as obsessions plus compulsions and how compulsions can be mental  • common OCD patterns like contamination fears checking symmetry rituals and reassurance seeking  • why intrusive thoughts feel like proof you are bad and how OCD assigns false meaning  • the danger detector loop and why it feels involuntary rather than a self-control issue  • the sledding groove metaphor for habit pathways and how awareness starts to weaken the groove  • how shame and fear fuel the cycle and why naming OCD reduces threat  • when trauma family patterns autism or PANS PANDAS can shape OCD symptoms  • Brain Lock by Dr Jeffrey Schwartz and the four steps relabel reattribute refocus revalue  • refocusing with a replacement behavior and building distress tolerance over time  • support options like therapy medication supplements and TMS to reduce symptom intensity  If you like our show, please leave us a rating and review on your favorite podcast platform. Why Do I Struggle with Executive Dysfunction

We reframe ADHD in teens and young adults as a developmental nervous system issue rather than a character flaw, then unpack why independence can feel impossible when executive functioning lags. We share practical ways to reduce shame and power struggles while building autonomy, skills, and real readiness for adult life.  • executive dysfunction and why task initiation stalls  • prefrontal cortex development and the role of attachment and attunement  • how stress, trauma, and misattunement can shape ADHD symptoms  • shame, negative self-talk, and lower self-esteem in ADHD  • why teens can act younger than their age emotionally  • how pushing independence too hard can trigger shutdown and “failure to launch”  • moving from command and control to a teaching mindset  • autonomy, choice language, and letting natural consequences teach  • scaffolding independence with realistic home agreements and supports  • progress over perfection and the importance of rupture and repair  • flexible pathways to mastery through step-by-step goals and quick wins  If you like our show, please leave us a rating and review on your favorite podcast platform.
