The Wealthy Ironworker

I have been researching and writing for over 8 years at www.thewealthyironworker.com, sharing my unique perspective as a union ironworker on a wide variety of topics. For a lot of those years, I've heard numerous times, "You should start a podcast." So I did - and here it is. I discuss a lot of different topics - and I hope you will join The Wealthy Ironworker as I Explore Beyond The Veil of Composure.

A Discussion About Union Structure and Affiliations

In this podcast episode, I explain how the union organizational structure is similiar to the way government is structured. You have a local union (similar to local government), then locals grouped together comprise districts/regional areas (think state government), and those districts/regional areas come together to form the International (it's international because of the United States and Canada) and that is similar to a national government. And just like the United States is a member of international communities, those international unions are part of/affiliated with associations like NABTU (North American Building Trades Unions). The more you know and understand the structure, the better. I am also inviting anyone who would like to be on the podcast to email me. Bechtel, Nuclear Power, and Unions

Bechtel is a large company that knows the value of a continuous workforce pipeline and wants to ensure their nuclear projects are staffed. Their solution? Signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with NABTU - North America's Building Trades Unions - to "advance and modernize apprenticeships." Bechtel's commitment to unions is a clear sign of the value of trade unionism and the Registered Apprenticeship Programs (RAPs) it uses to train the next generation. Here is the link to check out the article I mentioned in the podcast episode: https://www.enr.com/articles/62964-bechtel-boosts-role-in-nuclear-power-resurgence-with-new-union-apprenticeship-pact I mentioned ten new nuclear reactor projects slated to start by 2030. Humanity and Compassion: A Story You Didn't Know

9/11 - a catastrophic event of epic proportions. And while our first responders - our police, firefighters, and emergency personnel - were on the scene, there was another group also on the scene who took the lead: Ironworkers. On the 25th anniversary of 9/11, I get to sit down with the producer of "Metal of Honor: The Ironworkers of 9/11" - Rachel Maguire - where the often forgotten first responders, Ironworkers, get a chance to tell their story. This is a fantastic documentary and a great podcast interview. Your Focus Shouldn't be ONLY on Money in the Pocket - Benefits Matter

Too many people focus on what they get paid in the pocket and disregard any benefits, often to their own detriment - especially later in life. No matter where you are at currently - completely disregarding benefits, get benefits but don't really understand their importance, haven't really thought about them, or simply would appreciate someone explaining them in greater detail, give this episode a listen/watch. A couple of points worth knowing: First, health insurance and retirement are the main benefits discussed. That isn't to say there aren't others; in fact, a lot of people have a wider variety of benefits - I just wanted to focus on what I believe are the two most important. Second, the benefits discussed are from a skilled trades perspective and union focused in particular. Why? Because they are some of the best benefits you can get and given the timeframe we are in culturally, I want to have some authenticity when discussing this important topic.
