Your Life Is Customized—People Shouldn't Be | Why Being Alone Feels Easier #3

We customize almost everything in our lives now—our schedules, entertainment, coffee orders, social feeds, shopping, even the people and interests the algorithms put in front of us.But I think all that customization is changing what we expect from relationships, too. We’re getting increasingly used to people who match our interests, values, life stage, communication style and schedule. And when someone doesn’t? It has become very easy to decide they’re simply “not my kind of person.”I call this the Chipotle Effect: getting exactly what we want in so many areas of life is shrinking our tolerance for the parts of human relationships we didn’t personally select. In this episode, I’m talking about why customized schedules make connection harder, how social media and niche communities affect who we interact with, why compatibility and connection are not the same thing, and one simple way to become more curious about people who aren’t exactly like you. This is Part 3 of Why Being Alone Feels Easier Now—and Why That’s a Problem, my three-part series on Convenience, Customization and Comfort.▶️ WATCH NEXT: Comfort Is Shrinking Your Social Life | Why Being Alone Feels Easier #2https://youtu.be/e_IljnosUos▶️ WATCH THE FULL SERIES: Why Being Alone Feels Easier Now—and Why That’s a Problemhttps://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLPR9OKla3Re8I speak to organizations about workplace connection, authentic networking, and the small relationship-building habits that help people communicate better, collaborate more easily, and feel less alone at work.If your team or audience needs a more honest, practical conversation about connection, learn more or inquire here:https://www.cassthompson.com/speakerOr email me at Cass@cassthompson.comWant to reach out but not sure what to say? How Comfort Is Making Connection Harder | Why Being Alone Feels Easier #2

Life has become incredibly comfortable. We have heated seats, Lightning Lane, towel warmers, temperature-controlled mugs, hotel-room gadgets, and a phone ready to rescue us from thirty seconds of boredom. That comfort feels good. It has also made the ordinary discomfort of dealing with people feel much bigger than it is.Meeting someone is nerve-wracking. Walking into an event alone is nerve-wracking. Calling instead of texting, inviting someone who might say no, driving across town to see a friend, or sitting through an awkward pause all require a little discomfort. You do not get socially confident and then start talking to people. You start talking to people, and that is how you become socially confident. This episode looks at why comfort is a terrible predictor of what will actually make us feel good, what the commuter study discovered when people talked to strangers, and how to rebuild your social confidence through a 10% discomfort challenge.**WATCH NEXT:** I Also Live Alone. Life Got More Convenient. So Why Are We Lonelier? | Why Being Alone Feels Easier #1

Life has never been more convenient—but that convenience has quietly removed people from ordinary life. You can mobile-order coffee, get your Target order placed in your trunk, have groceries left at your door, DoorDash dinner, and go through an entire Saturday without really talking to anyone. Each tool saves time. But together, they’ve removed many of the casual interactions that used to help us feel connected to the world around us.In Part 1 of Why Being Alone Feels Easier, I’m looking at what convenience erased, why connection now feels like another task we have to schedule, how people themselves began to feel inconvenient, and one small way to start putting people back into the equation.WATCH NEXT:▶ The Health Advice No One Ever Told You: Social Healthhttps://youtu.be/0Qc_iLrgQ8A▶ I Also Live Alone. The Health Advice No One Ever Told You

We track our sleep, protein, workouts, supplements, even our VO2 max. And over the last 20 years, we’ve gotten much better at talking about our mental health too.But there is a third part of our health most of us aren’t thinking about nearly enough: **social health.**So many of the interactions that used to happen naturally have disappeared from our lives. We can work, order food, exercise, shop and entertain ourselves without speaking to anyone. We thought about what we were gaining, but we didn’t think nearly enough about what we were losing. This is about why connection isn’t just nice to have, how to look at your own social health through **structure, function and quality**, and where to start if one of those areas needs attention. And no, this does not mean you need to become an extrovert, find 50 friends or suddenly have plans five nights a week.It does mean people probably need to move a little higher on the priority list.**WATCH NEXT:** 10 BEST Places to Meet NEW People In 2024 → [VIDEO LINK]**ALSO MENTIONED:** The self-care advice that can quietly make loneliness worse →https://youtu.be/jiEFbteup9E What the viral loneliness videos are missing → https://youtu.be/mtgMXbbf8kQ Over the next three episodes, I’m also looking at three things making connection harder in modern life: convenience, customization and comfort.00:00 The Missing Piece of the Health Puzzle02:27 What Is Social Health?03:10 How Connection Stopped Happening15:35 The Framework: Structure, Function, Quality19:39 Where to Start**SOURCES & RESEARCH:**- U.S. Surgeon General, *Our Epidemic of Loneliness and Isolation* — social connection framework and health evidence: https://www.hhs.gov/sites/default/files/surgeon-general-social-connection-advisory.pdf- Sommerlad et al., *Association of social contact with dementia and cognition: 28-year follow-up of the Whitehall II cohort study*: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31374073/- Cohen et al., *Does Hugging Provide Stress-Buffering Social Support?*: https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/0956797614559284- Smith et al., *The association between loneliness, social isolation and inflammation*: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32092313/- Berkman and Syme, *Social networks, host resistance, and mortality*: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/425958/- Sandstrom and Dunn, *Social Interactions and Well-Being: The Surprising Power of Weak Ties*: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/24769739/Want to reach out but not sure what to say? Stop Looking for the Right People and Start Building Real Relationships

I speak to organizations about workplace connection, authentic networking, and the small relationship-building habits that help people communicate better, collaborate more easily, and feel less alone at work.If your team or audience needs a more honest, practical conversation about connection, learn more or inquire here:https://www.cassthompson.com/speaker Or email me at Cass@cassthompson.comAfter returning from a conference, Cass Thompson argues that career- or life-changing connections often come from people others overlook while chasing “the right” contacts. She explains that while it’s wise to choose rooms aligned with your goals, ranking or dismissing people based on titles is shortsighted because you don’t know who someone knows—or how they might help. Cass shares her experience being taken seriously when she worked in TV but ignored as a career coach at an industry mixer, and recounts how a lunch meeting led her to introduce a recent grad to a recruiter, resulting in a long-term job at Riot Games. She emphasizes authentic relationship-building: talk to everyone, follow up with people you genuinely like, and avoid status-driven networking.00:00 Hidden Networking Wins00:31 Right Rooms Myth01:25 Stop Ranking People01:59 Dismissed By Title02:49 Lunch That Changed Careers05:15 Why You Cant Predict05:48 Authentic Follow Ups06:25 Dont Chase Status06:41 Conference Speaker Chaser07:30 Final Networking ChallengeWant to reach out but not sure what to say? Drawing on a counseling-center example, she notes that many people may need friends more than experts, and warns that excessive “processing” alone can become rumination, which research links to worsened mood and impaired problem-solving. She also discusses behavioral activation and healthy distraction as beneficial alternatives, critiques how “trauma dumping” and “protect your peace” language can discourage appropriate sharing, and encourages making time to reach out—and to be reachable—for others.SHOP AMAZON to See our Favorite Things!
