The Dark Secrets of Pluckley: Britain's Most Haunted Village

For more than seventy years, Pluckley in Kent has been known as England’s most haunted village. But where did that reputation really come from?In 1950, local historian and paranormal researcher Frederick Sanders wrote an article for the Kentish Express, naming ten ghosts said to haunt Pluckley — and describing the village as the “most haunted village in England.”His stories would go on to appear in newspapers, books, television programmes and countless retellings. But when modern researchers went back to the archives, they discovered something fascinating. In 2025, Dr Simon Moreton of the University of the West of England investigated the origins of Pluckley’s famous ghost stories, searching newspapers, parish records and historical documents for the people and events behind the legends. And some of the ghosts had very real stories behind them.In this video, we follow three of Frederick Sanders’ most famous Pluckley ghosts:👻 The Screaming Man of the Clay Pit — a ghost said to scream from the old clay pit. Historical records reveal a real man, Richard Bridgland, who died there in 1899.👻 The Hanging Schoolmaster — a ghost said to haunt the Haunted Laurels. But research suggests Sanders may have combined the stories of two different men: Henry Edgar Martin, who really was found hanged in Pluckley in 1919, and a schoolmaster who died elsewhere.👻 The Red Lady — the mysterious woman in red said to haunt St Nicholas Church and the Dering family vault. But there is no confirmed historical record of the Lady Dering as Sanders described her.So how did these stories begin?Which parts can be traced back to real people and real deaths — and which parts may have changed as the legends were retold? This is the story of Pluckley, England’s most haunted village — and the dark secrets behind its ghosts.---📚 Sources & further readingResearch by Dr Simon Moreton, University of the West of England, into the origins and development of Pluckley’s ghost stories.Frederick Sanders’ original accounts and contemporary newspaper records were also consulted in researching this episode. If you enjoy true ghost stories, haunted places, British history, folklore and the darker stories hidden behind historic locations, subscribe to And Other Stories for more.#Pluckley #MostHauntedVillage #HauntedEngland #GhostStories #TrueGhostStories #BritishGhostStories #HauntedUK #EnglishHistory #BritishHistory #DarkHistory #Paranormal #GhostHunting #HauntedPlaces #EnglishFolklore #Kent #PluckleyKent #FrederickSanders #TheRedLady #HauntedHistory #AndOtherStoriesPodcast❤ FOLLOW US ON SOCIALS✔ Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/andotherstoriespodcast/✔ TikTok - https://www.tiktok.com/@and.other.stories.pod/Scary stories / Short stories#ghost #ghoststory #ghoststories #scary #scarystory #scarystories #horror #paranormal Gathering Darkness by Kevin MacLeod is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license. https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/

The Dark Secrets Behind Scotland’s Witch Confessions

The third confessed to a lifetime of horrifying crimes when he believed he was dying. But none of them were quite what they seemed. The Scottish witch trials lasted for more than a century, destroying the lives of thousands of men and women accused of an impossible crime. Under torture, fear, illness, psychological distress and religious fanaticism, people confessed to extraordinary things. But what were these confessions really telling us?In this episode of And Other Stories, we uncover the dark secrets behind three of Scotland's most disturbing confessions:🔮 Isobel Gowdie — the Auldearn woman who described flying through the night with the Devil, transforming into animals and dining with the fairy queen.🔥 Agnes Sampson — the respected healer whose confession was extracted through brutal torture, before she whispered a terrifying secret into King James VI's ear.🕯️ Major Thomas Weir — the respected, religious old man who confessed to a lifetime of depravity as he believed he was dying, leaving behind one of Edinburgh's most enduring ghost stories. Were these people witches?Or were their confessions the tragic result of torture, fear, illness, trauma, hallucination and the desperate need to survive? And perhaps most disturbing of all — what happens when a confession reveals something that isn't supernatural at all, but simply human evil? These are the dark secrets behind three Scottish confessions that have haunted Scotland for centuries.00:00 Introduction - Three Witch Confessions01:00 Isobel Gowdie05:06 Agnes Sampson08:32 Major Thomas Weir#ScottishWitchTrials #Witchcraft #ScottishHistory #AndOtherStoriesPodcast #GhostStories #Scotland #Witches #DarkHistory #Folklore #HauntedScotland❤ FOLLOW US ON SOCIALS✔ Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/andotherstoriespodcast/✔ TikTok - https://www.tiktok.com/@and.other.stories.pod/Scary stories / Short stories#ghost #ghoststory #ghoststories #scary #scarystory #scarystories #horror #paranormal

    When Murder Cases Turned Paranormal

Across history, there are strange cases where ghost sightings, séances, and supernatural claims became tied to real murder investigations. In this video, we explore three real cases where belief in the paranormal played a role in crime, confession, or conviction:• The Hammersmith Ghost case (1803) — where a man shot a figure he believed was a spirit haunting a London cemetery, leading to a tragic death and a controversial trial.• The case of Terry Childs, a convicted serial killer who later claimed he was visited in prison by the ghost of one of his victims.• The story of Zona Heaster Shue, where a mother used a séance to uncover details surrounding her daughter’s suspicious death, leading to a murder investigation. These cases sit in the blurred space between:fear, superstition, psychology, and justice. Were these truly supernatural encounters… or simply human minds trying to make sense of violence and guilt?⚠️ Disclaimer:This video is a narrative and educational retelling of historical and true crime events. All visuals used are illustrative reconstructions intended for storytelling purposes only and should not be interpreted as exact or verified depictions of real people, locations, or events.💬 What do you think? Were these cases influenced by something supernatural… or entirely explained by fear and psychology?#TrueCrime #GhostStories #Paranormal #HauntedHistory #CreepyStories #DarkHistory #MurderMystery #HistoricalMystery #Supernatural #GhostStory #ScaryStories #HorrorStories #TrueStory #UnsolvedMysteries #CrimeHistory #BritishHistory #VictorianHistory #GeorgianLondon #CreepyHistory #DarkTrueCrime❤ FOLLOW US ON SOCIALS✔ Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/andotherstoriespodcast/✔ TikTok - https://www.tiktok.com/@and.other.stories.pod/Scary stories / Short stories#ghost #ghoststory #ghoststories #scary #scarystory #scarystories #horror #paranormal
