When Self-Care Starts Feeling Like Work

What happens when taking care of yourself starts feeling like another thing you're supposed to be good at? Somewhere along the way, self-care became a list of routines, rituals, and expectations—and suddenly we could feel like we were failing at taking care of ourselves. In this episode, Cori explores what happens when wellness becomes another form of performance and why sometimes taking care of yourself means doing less, not adding another task to the list. Together, we look at the difference between caring for yourself and managing yourself, and what it can look like to actually listen to what you need instead of following someone else's version of wellness. Because self-care isn't another test you have to pass. Sometimes the most caring thing you can do is stop trying so hard to do it “right.”   Today's Reflection What do I actually need right now? Not what should I need. Not what would look good on Instagram. Not what worked for someone else. What do I need? And then ask yourself: What is one small thing I can do to honor that need? It doesn't have to be impressive. It doesn't have to be productive. It just has to be honest.   ⭐ If This Episode Resonated With You If The Melanin Wellness Podcast has helped you feel seen, understood, or a little less alone, please take a moment to leave the show a rating. Anxious, Avoidant, or Somewhere in Between? Understanding Your Attachment Patterns

The way we connect with people isn't completely random. We develop patterns around closeness, trust, vulnerability, conflict, and what we expect from the people we love. Our early relationships can influence those patterns, but they're not the whole story. Life experiences, relationships, personality, and what happens to us later can shape how we respond to connection and uncertainty, too. In this episode of The Melanin Wellness Podcast, we're exploring attachment patterns without turning them into permanent labels. Maybe you recognize yourself in anxious patterns—seeking reassurance, becoming especially alert when someone feels distant, or overthinking when a relationship feels uncertain. Maybe you recognize more avoidant patterns—pulling away when things get emotionally intense, protecting your independence, or finding vulnerability uncomfortable. Or maybe you see pieces of yourself in both. The goal isn't to diagnose yourself or decide who you are forever. It's to become curious about your patterns—and recognize that awareness creates the possibility for change. Today's Reflection What happens inside you when you feel disconnected, uncertain, rejected, or too close? Do you reach for reassurance? Do you pull away? Do you overthink? Do you become quiet? Do you assume the worst? Do you tell yourself you don't care when you actually care deeply? Don't judge the answer. Just notice. And then ask yourself: “Is this about what's happening right now—or is something familiar being activated in me?” You don't need a label to become more self-aware. You just need enough curiosity to notice the pattern. 🌿 Reflection Cards: A Moment to Check In With Yourself.  ✨ Reflection Cards: A Moment to Check In With Yourself.  Gentle prompts for women navigating transition, identity shifts, and emotional healing 👉🏾 https://themelaninwellnesspodcast.com/reflection-cards-for-rebuilding ⭐ If This Episode Resonated With You If The Melanin Wellness Podcast has helped you feel seen, understood, or a little less alone, please take a moment to leave the show a rating. What If "I Don't Need Anyone" Is Actually Self-Protection?

Being independent isn't a problem. Being capable isn't a problem. And knowing how to handle your own life isn't a problem. But sometimes, “I don't need anyone” can become more than independence. It can be a way of protecting yourself from the vulnerability of needing someone and being disappointed, let down, or unsupported. In this episode of The Melanin Wellness Podcast, we're exploring the difference between healthy independence and self-reliance that may have become a protective pattern. What happens when asking for help feels harder than doing everything yourself? When receiving support makes you uncomfortable? When “I've got it” becomes your automatic response—even when you don't actually have it? This isn't about labeling independence as trauma or deciding that something is wrong with you. It's about getting curious about the patterns that may have helped you cope in the past and asking whether they still serve the woman you're becoming. Today's Reflection Are you doing everything yourself because you truly want to…Or because somewhere along the way, you stopped believing someone else would show up? The answer might tell you whether you’re living in self-reliance…or survival. You don't have to change anything today. Awareness comes first. 🌿 Reflection Cards: A Moment to Check In With Yourself.  ✨ Reflection Cards: A Moment to Check In With Yourself.  Gentle prompts for women navigating transition, identity shifts, and emotional healing 👉🏾 https://themelaninwellnesspodcast.com/reflection-cards-for-rebuilding ⭐ If This Episode Resonated With You If The Melanin Wellness Podcast has given you a moment of clarity, comfort, or simply made you feel a little less alone, please take a moment to leave the show a rating. Shut Down, Spiral, or Explode? Understanding Your Stress Response

When you're overwhelmed, your response might not look like anyone else's. You might shut down and pull away. You might spiral into overthinking, replaying conversations and searching for an answer. Or you might become frustrated, defensive, or angry. You might even stay constantly busy because slowing down feels harder than keeping moving. In this episode of The Melanin Wellness Podcast, we're taking a closer look at the different ways stress and overwhelm can show up in our thoughts, emotions, and behavior. These reactions don't automatically mean something is wrong with you. They can be patterns you've developed over time—and understanding those patterns can give you more choices in how you respond. Instead of judging yourself for shutting down, spiraling, or exploding, we're practicing something different: curiosity. What happens in you when things feel like too much? What might that response be trying to protect you from? And what would it look like to notice the pattern without making it a character judgment? Today's Reflection What happens when you're under stress? Do you shut down? Do you spiral? Do you become defensive or angry? Do you get busy and try to outrun what you're feeling? Don't judge the answer. Just notice. And then ask yourself: What might my reaction be trying to protect? You don't have to figure it all out today. Curiosity is enough for now.   🌿 Reflection Cards: A Moment to Check In With Yourself.  ✨ Reflection Cards: A Moment to Check In With Yourself.  Gentle prompts for women navigating transition, identity shifts, and emotional healing 👉🏾 https://themelaninwellnesspodcast.com/reflection-cards-for-rebuilding Free Resource ✨ Download the Holistic Nutrition Cheatsheet A practical guide for busy Black women rebuilding their wellness one choice at a time. Why You React Before You Think: What's Happening in Your Nervous System

Have you ever reacted to something and immediately thought, “Why did I just do that?” A change in someone's tone. A delayed text. A look that felt off. A difficult conversation. Before you've had time to consciously process what's happening, your body may already be responding. In this episode of The Melanin Wellness Podcast, we're talking about the space between what happens, what your body notices, and how you ultimately respond. Sometimes our reactions can happen incredibly quickly. Our nervous system is constantly taking in information and responding to what it perceives as important, threatening, familiar, or overwhelming. And experiences from our past can influence the patterns we develop around protection, conflict, and connection. That doesn't mean every fast reaction is a trauma response—or that something is wrong with you. But awareness can help you create more space between the reaction and the response—and that space can give you more choices. In this episode, we explore: Why your body can react before your conscious mind catches up How automatic reactions can develop over time Why reacting quickly doesn't automatically mean you're dramatic, difficult, or “too much” The difference between an automatic reaction and an intentional response How to become more aware of your personal reaction patterns Why curiosity can be more useful than criticizing yourself How creating a pause can give you more choices about what happens next This week’s reflection: What does your body tend to do before your mind has had time to catch up? What happened right before my reaction? Not just what someone said. What did I feel? What did I assume? What did my body do? And what did I need in that moment? There's nothing you need to “fix” about yourself in this moment. Just notice. 🌿 Reflection Cards: A Moment to Check In With Yourself.  ✨ Reflection Cards: A Moment to Check In With Yourself.  Gentle prompts for women navigating transition, identity shifts, and emotional healing 👉🏾 https://themelaninwellnesspodcast.com/reflection-cards-for-rebuilding 🎙️ I want to hear from you What's something your nervous system has taught you to react to quickly? The Invisible Checklist: Why You Feel Behind Even When You've Done Everything Right

Have you ever looked at your life and thought, “I should be further along by now”—even though you've done everything you were told you were supposed to do? You may have built a career, raised a family, maintained relationships, worked hard, and checked plenty of boxes, yet still feel like you're falling behind. You compare your life to other people's milestones, question your choices, and wonder why you're not where you thought you'd be by this age. In this episode of The Melanin Wellness Podcast, Cori Dunn explores the invisible expectations that shape how we measure success, happiness, relationships, career, productivity, and personal growth. We'll unpack the pressure of societal timelines, comparison, perfectionism, and the belief that there is one correct path for how your life is supposed to unfold. More importantly, we'll ask a question that can change the way you see your life: Who wrote the rules you're using to decide whether you're on track? Because sometimes feeling behind doesn't mean you've failed. It means you're measuring your life against a checklist you never chose. 🎧 The Invisible Checklist: Why You Feel Behind Even When You've Done Everything Right Today's Reflection Whose checklist have I been trying to complete? The Exhaustion of Being "Fine"

How often do you say “I'm fine” without actually stopping to ask yourself how you're doing? Sometimes “fine” isn't a lie. It's simply the answer you've gotten so used to giving that you stopped checking in with yourself. You keep showing up, handling responsibilities, taking care of everyone else, and carrying what needs to be carried—but underneath the surface, you may be experiencing emotional exhaustion, stress, burnout, or feelings you haven't had the time or energy to process. In this episode of The Melanin Wellness Podcast, Cori Dunn explores the hidden exhaustion of always appearing okay, the emotional weight of constantly holding things together, and why being functional doesn't necessarily mean you're well. We'll talk about emotional suppression, masking, people-pleasing, burnout, emotional fatigue, and the importance of self-awareness. You'll learn why checking in with yourself shouldn't require someone else to ask twice—and how creating space to honestly acknowledge what you're feeling can be an important part of your mental and emotional wellness. Because “fine” isn't always a lie. Sometimes it's simply what we say when we've been carrying something for so long that we've forgotten to ask whether we're still okay. 🎧 The Exhaustion of Being “Fine” Today's Reflection Where in your life have you been saying, "I'm fine"... when what you really need is a little more honesty, a little more rest, or a little more support? 🌿 Reflection Cards: A Moment to Check In With Yourself.  ✨ Reflection Cards: A Moment to Check In With Yourself.  Gentle prompts for women navigating transition, identity shifts, and emotional healing 👉🏾 https://themelaninwellnesspodcast.com/reflection-cards-for-rebuilding Free Resource ✨ Download the Holistic Nutrition Cheatsheet A practical guide for busy Black women rebuilding their wellness one choice at a time. 👉🏾 holisticnutritioncheatsheet.subscribepage.io Connect with Cori https://themelaninwellnesspodcast.com/podcast Disclaimer: This podcast is intended to educate, encourage, and inspire. You're Not Lazy — You're Overwhelmed

What if what you’ve been calling laziness is actually overwhelm, mental overload, and decision fatigue? When your brain is juggling work, family, relationships, finances, health, responsibilities, and a never-ending to-do list, even simple tasks can feel impossible. You may procrastinate, freeze, struggle with motivation, or sit down to rest only to feel guilty for not getting more done. In this episode of The Melanin Wellness Podcast, Cori Dunn explores the connection between overwhelm, procrastination, mental load, decision fatigue, burnout, and motivation. We’ll talk about why an overloaded brain can make you feel stuck—and why criticizing yourself for not “doing more” often makes the cycle worse. You'll learn how to recognize when you're dealing with overwhelm rather than laziness, why your brain may shut down when everything feels urgent, and how focusing on one smaller next step can help you move forward without adding more pressure. Because sometimes the answer isn't: “Try harder.” It's: “Make the next step smaller.” 🎧 You’re not lazy. You’re overwhelmed.
