Astros on the Brink & Texans Enter the Stages of Suck

It all comes down to the final week for the Houston Astros. We break down what the Astros need to do to keep their season alive, react to the Game 1 loss to the White Sox, and ask a question that may say a lot about Joe Espada’s future in Houston: if the Astros fired him, would another Major League team immediately hire him to manage? Then we turn to the Texans, where an 0–3 start has Scott introducing a new framework for understanding exactly how bad things have gotten: The Stages of Suck. We look at where Houston currently falls on the scale, what has gone wrong through three games, and whether there are still reasons to believe this team can turn things around. Six Games for the West & Texans Searching for Touchdowns

The Astros have six games left to save their season. Houston heads to Seattle for two before finishing with four in Sacramento, sitting just one game back in the AL West. We break down what has to happen over the final week, whether this team can finally seize control of a division that has been there for the taking, and why every Joe Espada decision now has to be treated like October baseball. Then we turn to the Texans, who somehow managed to turn 374 yards of offense into six points against Cincinnati. C.J. Stroud threw for 353 yards without an interception, but Houston never found the end zone. We get into Nick Caley’s play calling, the disappearing running game, Xavier Hutchinson and Jared Wayne failing to give Stroud enough help, DeMeco Ryans’ fourth-and-one decision, and a special-teams performance that was bad in almost every possible way. This week’s awards include Nick Caley, DeMeco Ryans, Will Anderson Jr., Jeff Pearlman for his willingness to revisit his own work and openly discuss where he got things wrong, and a rare dual Scumbag selection for Joe Espada. Texans Defense Falters, Astros Fight for the West

The Texans opened the season with a 36–31 loss to Buffalo, and there was plenty to like offensively. C.J. Stroud looked sharp, David Montgomery made an immediate impact, and the offense put up enough points to win. The problem was the defense. We break down why Matt Burke didn’t adjust quickly enough while Josh Allen was carving Houston apart, why the offensive line remains a concern outside of Rutledge, and how Trent Brown’s breakdown on the final offensive snap helped end the Texans’ comeback attempt. Then we turn to the Astros, who looked strong in Philadelphia before completely falling apart in Tampa. Somehow, they still enter the final homestand of the season in first place in the AL West. Can this team do enough over the final stretch to actually win the division? Astros Bats Go Cold & Texans Get Ready for Week 1

The Astros started the week looking like they might finally be heating up, only to drop back-to-back games to Arizona and revive the same old question: can this offense score enough runs when the pitching staff isn’t nearly perfect? We break down Houston’s upcoming road trip through Philadelphia and Tampa, what has to change at the plate, and why the Astros hitting coaches earned this week’s Horse’s Ass. Then it’s officially football season. The Texans open Sunday against Buffalo, and we preview the matchup, make predictions, and discuss the fact that the assigned referee crew led the NFL in penalties per game last season. This week’s awards also include people stealing balls from the chipping green, Tim shamelessly giving himself a Hat Tip after shooting 68 at Oak Hollow, and umpire Doug Eddings earning Scumbag of the Week for turning a rookie pitcher’s crooked hat into a major-league issue.
