32: A Retailer's Perspective on Logistics: A Conversation with Nathan Goodrich

How do retailers balance cost, speed, and customer expectations in today's supply chain? Co-hosts Jason Rowland and Nick Agnetti sat down with Nathan Goodrich, Senior Director of Inventory and Logistics at FabFitFun, to discuss subscription box fulfillment, carrier partnerships, inventory planning, and what logistics providers can do to better support retailers. If you're involved in retail, eCommerce, fulfillment, or logistics, this conversation offers valuable insights into the challenges—and opportunities—of building resilient supply chains. Learn more about this topic: Asendia USA: Request a sales quotationHow to Start Shipping Subscription Boxes InternationallyHow to Combat the Top 5 Challenges for Subscription Box CompaniesFabFitFun - Beauty, Fitness, Lifestyle Nathan Goodrich | LinkedIn Nathan Goodrich is Senior Director of Inventory Management and Logistics at FabFitFun, based out of the company's fulfillment center in Chino, California. He holds direct responsibility for a multi-carrier domestic and international logistics network exceeding $70 million in annual freight cost, warehouse operations and inventory control, general management duties over the internal 3pl business operated by FabFitFun. Over the past seven years, his work has centered on the operational and financial engine behind getting product from origin to member doorstep, reliably and at scale. Founded in 2010, FabFitFun pivoted in 2013 from a digital media company into a seasonal subscription box model, shipping full-size products across beauty, wellness, fashion, and fitness to members four times a year. That quarterly cadence creates a distinct logistics challenge: massive, recurring volume spikes rather than steady-state daily demand, which has shaped much of Nathan's approach to carrier strategy and network design. Data-driven decision making runs through all of it. FabFitFun's domestic network runs on 10+ parcel carriers managed through a rate shop engine that competes each package across every carrier to find the most cost-effective option. The engine retains every bid, which gives Nathan's team granular visibility to fine-tune the network region by region rather than applying a one-size-fits-all carrier strategy. That competition-as-strategy approach has driven down cost per package — the company's 2026 cost per package is actually lower than it was back in 2019, a notable outcome given how much shipping costs have risen industry-wide over that same time frame. On the international side, he also oversees parcel shipping along with the customs clearance and duty management that come with moving product across borders, alongside carton and dimensional-weight optimization and the broader trade compliance work that keeps product flowing smoothly. Nathan has applied the same analytical rigor to inventory, building an inventory management system that holds shrink to less than 0.5% across more than $200 million in cost of goods annually.
