Awaken Hope with Patrick Sangimino on Patrick Sangimino

Patrick Sangimino was an award-winning journalist for more than four decades at newspapers in California and throughout the Midwest before retiring in 2024. He covered the National Football League for eight seasons and eventually moved back and forth between news and sports departments as a columnist and editor. Born in San Francisco, raised miles away in Pacifica, a blue-collar ocean town of 39,000, and educated at San Jose State University, Sangimino worked his way through college by free-lancing high school sporting events for the San Mateo Times. He got his first job as a sports editor of a one-man sports department at the Pacifica Tribune, his hometown weekly paper. Five years later, he was covering the NFL for the Olathe Daily News, a suburb of Kansas City, on the Kansas side of the state line. He did that job for eight seasons before moving onto KMBC, Kansas City’s ABC affiliate and the top-rated station in the city. He served as the senior editor of the web site and had a national column that ran in all 64 of the Hearst-Argyle properties nationwide. Sangimino moved to Wichita, Kansas in 2006 when his wife was offered a once-in-a-lifetime position at a Fortune 500 corporation. He became the managing editor of the Wichita Business Journal, a job he held for three years before going back to sports writing as the sports editor and columnist at the Hutchinson News, the third largest paper in the state at that time. His wife’s job was transferred again in 2014 — this time to Omaha, Nebraska. He wrote for the Omaha World Herald before landing a job at the Lincoln Journal Star in 2018. He held that job until retiring in 2024 to return to California — Sunnyvale in the heart of the Silicon Valley — to help his siblings take away the car keys from his now 87-year-old mother. One etched-in-stone commitment to his mother is lunch each Friday in the park before he and Kathy play Bingo at the Cupertino Community Center. His daughter Kaylin is an attorney in San Diego and lives with her husband Mitch. Get Your Copy on Amazon Today

Awaken Hope with Darlene Lekowski on Speaking Your Truth

Darlene Lekowski is an author, speaker, advocate, but most importantly, a survivor. Forced to hide the secret of her childhood trauma for more than fifty years, Darlene is now speaking out. Her message is one of resiliency and healing, and her intention is to use her voice to help others find theirs. As a child, Darlene was sexually assaulted by her two eldest brothers. The youngest of five children, Darlene grew up in a Midwestern town amongst the country club crowd where appearances mattered, especially to her mother. Convinced that her parents would cover it up, and terrified by her brothers’ threats, young Darlene told no one about the assaults, burying the secret in a box inside her mind, determined to keep her family and the good parts of her life intact. But boxes leak. Despite an extremely successful career, the weight and shame of this secret impacted every relationship in her life. After finally confiding in a close friend during college, Darlene began to seek help to deal with the ramifications of the trauma she had been through. She firmly believes this investment in her psychological healing helped save her life.  In 2021, after the death of her mother, the secret exploded. One of the brothers involved sued Darlene for defamation. Having her personal life and the details of her abuse so publicly put on display was devastating, but Darlene, knowing her truth, counter-sued. And won!  Her story is featured in an upcoming memoir, scheduled for release in April 2026.  The secret is now hers to own, and own it she has, channeling her energy into volunteering with organizations that provide education, support, and advocacy for victims of sibling sexual assault.  It is with this work that she is reaching back to protect the little girl that no one came to save. It is time to show her that heroes do exist. Website: https://darlene-lekowski.com
