Ep. 98: Run toward the storm - turn anger into faith & fuel w/father, coach, & friend Ervin Anderson

I sit down with my fantastic friend Ervin Anderson, a husband, father of 2, high school math teacher, and Diablo Valley City College basketball coach. We have a real conversation about what it was like growing up on the DC/Maryland border during the crack epidemic and the anger Erv carried as a teenager. He shares how faith, basketball, and his parents' discipline turned that anger into fuel instead of fear. Erv opens up about what it was like living on the edge of DC, where kids stayed in the yard instead of the neighborhood. He remembers the metal detector at school feeling like safety instead of fear, and recalls how the game of basketball became both an escape and the reason his grades turned around. He talks candidly about the anger he carried as a black teenager who felt like a target everywhere he went. Erv shares how he learned to place that anger instead of burying it, and how his understanding of God shifted from fear of hell to a genuine, steady faith. Erv now leans on this faith to make decisions in his life. In this conversation, we talk about:-Growing up on the DC/Maryland border during the crack epidemic, and what his parents did to keep him safe-How basketball and construction work with his dad turned into real-world lessons in math and discipline-The anger he carried as a teenager, where it came from, and how he learned to "place it" instead of letting it control him-His dad's line that changed everything: "you don't complain unless you plan on fixing it"-The bull vs. cow analogy for facing a storm head-on instead of running from it-Why "I've been here before" and looking to Jesus's life as a template for adversity changed how he copes with hard moments-How he moved from fearing God to trusting God, and what that shift unlocked in his marriage and parenting-His advice for anyone who wants to know God but doesn't know where to start: "just move" Connect with Erv on Instagram Meet Erv's incredible wife, Kendal Anderson, author of the children's book "Different," in ep. 76 Grab Kendal's book, "Different" This episode of Adventures in Adversity is sponsored by DIVINI, a honey-based sparkling kombucha tea. Ep. 97: You have to live to see it - a prophet's journey from grave clothes to freedom with Samia Young

I sit down with Prophet Samia Young, attorney, author, and founder of Samia Young Ministries, for one of the most raw and powerful testimonies this show has ever featured. Samia grew up in a domestic violence household and, by age seven, was already carrying her own birth certificate and Social Security card because she knew she'd have to raise herself. At 13, she was sent to live with an aunt in Chicago, where she endured three and a half years of starvation and abuse so severe it temporarily took away her ability to speak. At 14, in that same house, she gave her life to Christ, and at 15, a pastor she'd never met called her out from the back row and told her she was a prophet. Years of running followed: promiscuity, addiction, and jail on her 24th birthday, until a night at rock bottom holding a bottle of pills when she heard God say the words that saved her life. Today she's an attorney, a minister who preaches in women's prisons in Ohio, and the author of a memoir that's now becoming a stage play. In this conversation, we talk about: -How a domestic violence childhood shaped Samia's early "supernatural knowing" and sense of calling -The three and a half years she spent starved and abused by her aunt in Chicago, and how trauma took away her ability to speak -Giving her life to Christ at 14 inside the very house where she felt invisible and unsafe -Being called out as a prophet at 15, and why knowing your calling isn't enough to keep you from running from it -Jail on her 24th birthday and the exact words she heard from God the night she considered ending her life -The difference between coming out of the grave and actually being loosed from your grave clothes -Why God is after our dependency, not our perfection -Her new stage play, "Loose Her" debuting in the Cleveland, Ohio area this September Samia, Come Forth! Ep. 96: You’re not going insane - mapping the collapse after narcissistic abuse with Mark Thomas Beare

I'm incredibly grateful to sit down with Mark Thomas Beare, a survivor of narcissistic abuse who turned his multi-year search for understanding into ground-breaking psychological work. Mark begins ep. 96 by candidly sharing where it all began. After experiencing his own total psychological collapse in 2019, Mark spent years mapping his unraveling into a full theory, now known as (MPIT), built on the work of Professor Sam Vaknin, who wrote the forward to Mark's new book: Narcissistic Redeemer: Bringing You Back from Collapse Through thousands of hours of deep self-reflection and in-depth psychological research, Mark developed the Mirrored Psychic Inversion Theory (MPIT) and Anticipatory Stress Reflex (ASR) theories of narcissistic abuse, two critical frameworks that are changing the way survivors and clinicians approach recovery. This is one of the most detailed conversations this show has ever had about what actually happens inside the mind of survivors of narcissistic abuse. We talk about why the chaos, dissociation, and identity loss that follow a discard are not a sign that you're broken. It's a sign that you can feel pain...and you can recover. If you've ever wondered whether you were losing your mind after a relationship ended, this conversation offers language, structure, and real hope for finding your way back. In this episode, we cover: -The shared fantasy, the dual mothership, and the cathexis cycle (idealization, devaluation, discard) -Why survivors co-idealize a partner too, and how that creates a collapse that gets deferred until after the relationship ends -The liminal phase, collapse-induced psychotic regression, orbital collapse, and the deadness phase that follow a discard -The five self-states inside collapse: the Redeemer, the Mute Child, the False Protector, the Introject Enforcer, and the Truth Self -The ASR Complex (Anticipatory Stress Reflex) and why reality feels like it's slipping away during collapse -Building an "observer ego" and learning to decathect from the internal loop -Why the capacity to feel this much pain is proof you can heal, not proof something is wrong with you You're not going insane. You're not alone. You were abused by a narcissist whose primary goal was to, as Mark puts it, "colonize your mind." You did not imagine it. You're not being too sensitive. And you CAN rebuild yourself after collapsing under the weight of the darkness of narcissistic abuse. As Mark brilliantly says in this interview: your breakdown - that reaction that rocked your inner psyche - from a clinical psychology perspective, is a normal reaction to a very abnormal situation with your abuser. In this episode, Mark walks us through each phase of the survivor's collapse in detail so you can understand exactly what happened when the narcissist infiltrated your mind and began conditioning you through abuse. Read Mark's books to help you recondition your psyche to heal and step back into your true self...the self you swore you knew and lived in before the narcissist. Ep. 95: You are not your thoughts, motherhood, & choosing hope, with Valeriya Hjertenæs

I sit down with Valeriya Hjertenæs, PhD researcher, international speaker, and Mrs. World Congeniality. Valeriya's story starts in an unexpected place: a mental institution in Ukraine, in her pajamas, just weeks after adopting her daughter. She opens up about the moment her first intrusive thought hit, a terrifying image that felt completely opposite of who she was, and how not understanding what was happening led her down a dark path toward a suicide plan. Her mother's quiet intuition, noticing Valeriya packing winter clothes in the middle of summer, became the turning point that saved her life. Topics we cover: What intrusive thoughts actually are, and why they're not a reflection of your characterValeriya's path from crisis to diagnosis, and the doctor who told her "you are not crazy"Living with OCD as a mother, a PhD researcher, and a public figureThe global scale of neurodivergence, and why so many people never get diagnosedWhy men in some cultures are more likely to die by suicide than admit they're strugglingHow Valeriya turned her lowest moment into a mission of advocacy and hopeIf you've ever had a thought that scared you, one that felt nothing like the person you know yourself to be, this episode is for you. My hope is that you walk away feeling less alone, and reminded that your hardest chapter can still become someone else's hope. OCD resources for listeners - you're not alone! I share how I survived narcissistic abuse, the red flags I missed, and the 10 things I wish I’d known sooner. In this episode, I break down what narcissism actually is (it’s not just “being full of yourself”), how abuse shows up in friendships, romantic relationships, and family dynamics, and why confusion can be a red flag on its own. From love bombing and gaslighting to smear campaigns and “flying monkeys,” I walk through the patterns I experienced - and how doing my own research and learning from survivors and experts helped me finally see the truth. I also talk about how narcissistic abuse impacts your nervous system, why boundaries are non-negotiable, and how I’m using my healing journey to support others in the narcissistic abuse recovery community. What you’ll hear in this episode: How I went from thinking it was “just a toxic relationship” to recognizing narcissistic abuse What narcissism really is, from Professor Sam Vaknin’s definition to modern psychology Red flags I ignored: love bombing, isolation, gaslighting, smear campaigns, and more How narcissistic abuse can show up in women, including physical abuse toward men The impact on my body, nervous system, and mental health The 10 things I wish I knew sooner (including why “no” is a full sentence) The role of faith and my relationship with God in my recovery Resources & Experts Mentioned: Professor Sam Vaknin Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/narcissismwithvaknin/ Book: https://www.amazon.com/Malignant-Self-Love-Narcissism-Sam-Vaknin/dp/8023833847 Dr. Ramani Durvasula Podcast: https://www.iheart.com/podcast/1119-navigating-narcissism-wit-98632373/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/doctorramani/ Claire Auden Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/claire_auden_/ Richard Grannon YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XXP941XRLUI Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/richard.grannon/ Coach Randy White Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/officialcoachrandywhite/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/coachrandywhite/ Psychology Today Article on the Greek myth of Narcissus Sponsor: This episode is sponsored by DIVINI, a honey-based sparkling kombucha tea.
