The games were flat, the heatwave was ridiculous, and half the squad is still recovering from the longest World Cup ever but now things get serious. Jamie joins to break down what we learned, what we didn’t, and what actually matters heading into the new Premier League season. Pre‑Season Overview Arsenal beat Girona, lost to Betis and Dortmund, drew with Como, and played a behind‑closed‑doors friendly. With so many players away, pre‑season was more about fitness than form. Hale End kids like MLS, Dowman, Salmon and Nwaneri impressed, while Tzolis looked the most “ready” of the new faces. Highlights & Lowlights Tzolis’ versatility, two‑footedness and set‑piece quality stood out. Ben White’s return was important given Timber and Saliba’s absences. Meslier looked sharp and has likely overtaken Kepa as No.2. Defensive shakiness vs Betis and Dortmund was noted but contextualised; missing Rice, Saka, Saliba, Timber, Raya, Ødegaard and more. Transfers & Squad Shape This is where things get interesting. Bruno Guimarães arrives as a major reinforcement, giving Arsenal a midfield of Bruno, Merino, Zubimendi and MLS before Rice even returns. We discuss what Bruno actually offers; progression, aggression, end product, and the ability to play with or instead of Rice. MLS is now a genuine midfield option, not just a cameo kid. His presence changes rotation, changes depth, but is he surplus to requirements? Do we cash in? Rumours of touting to Chelsea & Man Utd ... there's no smoke without fire. Martinelli’s situation gets a proper look too: why his PL output dipped, why his Champions League numbers were elite, and why the tactical environment last season didn’t suit him. The key is not giving rivals a leg‑up and managing fitness carefully. Nine or ten points from the first five games, plus beating Chelsea, would be a strong start. Community Shield Preview Still technically pre‑season, but a useful test. Arsenal will be leggy, City will be leggy, and the result won’t define anything but it will be fun to win and will give clues about early‑season combinations. Closing Pre‑season is done.
