He Had 12 Years Sober. Then He Had One Drink.

Lost in Del Valle, written and performed by Ned Van Zandt, is at the Soho Playhouse through October 14. Tickets: lostindelvalle.com Viewer discretion: This episode discusses overdose, addiction, and incarceration. If you or someone you know is in crisis, call or text 988 or contact the SAMHSA National Helpline at 1-800-662-4357. Ned Van Zandt had 12 years sober, a Broadway career, money in the bank, apartments in New York and Los Angeles, and a recurring role on Law & Order. Then, in 2000, he decided he could have one drink. Seven years later, he was in a Texas state jail in Del Valle. In this episode, Ned talks openly about relapse after long-term sobriety, the difference between simply not drinking and actually doing the work of recovery, overdose, surrender, asking for help, and how he rebuilt his life after losing almost everything. He also shares how he turned those experiences into Lost in Del Valle, his autobiographical one-man show in which he plays 19 characters. By the end, the conversation arrives at the thing Ned says he would tell his ten-year-old self: “You are enough.” Ned didn’t just tell this story in a podcast. He turned it into a one-man show, playing 19 characters and bringing the real story of addiction, relapse, prison, and recovery to the stage. Lost in Del Valle is currently playing at Soho Playhouse through October 14.
