To begin, this podcast will focus on getting a brief introduction to some of the academics, professionals, and leading voices in the enormous field of workplace psychology. In later episodes, the goal will be to dive deeper! If you are curious about a career in IO psychology, HR, or anything "people" in either academics or the business world, this podcast will offer some solid exposure to the many facets.     Episode 6 | Dr. Tim Huelsman

    Dr. Tim Huelsman is Professor of Psychology and Director of the Industrial-Organizational Psychology and Human Resource Management Master’s program at Appalachian State University. Since arriving at Appalachian in 1997, he has taught graduate and undergraduate courses in his major area of specialization, organizational psychology, as well as in his other interest areas: program evaluation, research methods, statistics, and personality.  Tim’s research interests are broad and include organizational assessment, organizational culture and climate, job attitudes, work stress, and individual differences and diversity in the workplace. He has consulted for organizations large and small in the for-profit, not-for-profit, and government sectors. His most recent work has been facilitating strategic planning in higher education, but he has also engaged in organizational assessment, organizational development, and program evaluation.  Tim is a past Chairperson of the North Carolina I-O Psychologists and as a member of the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology, he co-authored the current Guidelines for Education and Training in Industrial-Organizational Psychology and participated in the creation of the annual Master’s Student Consortium. Tim served as Assistant Chairperson of Psychology for 4 years. In 2014 he was presented with the University of North Carolina Board of Governors Award for Excellence in Teaching and was inducted into Appalachian State University’s Academy of Outstanding Graduate Mentors in 2013. He earned his Ph.D., M.S., and B.S. in Psychology from Saint Louis University.  Tim resides in Boone, NC, where he pursues his avocation, photography.  He and his wife Jeanie (d. 12/23) have a son Calvin, a recent graduate of the Wilson College of Textiles at NC State University.     Episode 4 | Dr. Jack Carson

    Dr. Jack Carson was born and raised in Yuma, Arizona. He is an assistant professor of management at the Walker College of Business at Appalachian State University, where he teaches organizational behavior at the undergraduate level and Leadership, Groups, and Teams at the master's level. He enjoys helping students think through the "hows" and "whys" of organizational work life. Jack's research interests include workplace interpersonal mistreatment, attribution theory, deviance, and social exchange. He has published numerous articles in reputable journals, such as Group & Organization Management, Sustainability, and Journal of Management. His notable works explore topics like destructive voice responses to perceived unfairness, the effectiveness of organizational sustainability messaging, and the predictors of workplace deviance. Jack holds a BS in accountancy and an MBA from Northern Arizona University, and a PhD in Business Administration with a concentration in Management from Auburn University. Though he is not originally from North Carolina, he got here as fast as he could. In addition to his academic endeavors, Jack enjoys hiking, biking, and cooking with his partner, Kendra, who manages the micro- and molecular biology labs at Appalachian State University.     Dr. Yalcin Acikgoz is both a professor and alumnus of Industrial-Organizational (IO) Psychology at Appalachian State University. With a Ph.D. in IO Psychology from Middle East Technical University and a rich background in systems engineering from the Turkish Military Academy, Dr. Acikgoz brings a multifaceted perspective to our discussion. His academic journey is marked by significant contributions to understanding applicant decision-making processes, social media in recruitment, and personnel security, all while serving as the founder and director of the Applicant Decision-Making Lab. His professional experience extends beyond academia, including roles as a Manpower Analyst for the Turkish Armed Forces, where he was instrumental in strategic human resource planning and developing simulation software for manpower planning. Dr. Acikgoz's consulting work with organizations like Just Roots Consulting and Black Amethyst, LLC., highlights his expertise in organizational race equity assessment, further showcasing his commitment to applying psychological principles to real-world challenges. Dr. Acikgoz is passionate about teaching and mentoring students at both undergraduate and graduate levels. His courses include Industrial Psychology, Performance Management, Cross-cultural Psychology, and Staffing. His dedication to teaching is reflected in his consistently high student evaluations, underscoring his ability to inspire and educate future leaders in the field of psychology.   4. Episode 1 | Dr. Timothy Ludwig

    Episode 1 | Dr. Timothy Ludwig

    Timothy Ludwig earned his Ph.D. at Virginia Tech in industrial organizational psychology researching the benefits of employee-driven behavioral safety programs under E. Scott Geller, continuing his post-doctoral work in industrial engineering studying applications of W. Edwards Deming to quality and safety improvement. After graduation, Dr. Ludwig consulted with the Department of Energy to study and improve their management systems on the New Production Reactor project, a modern-day Manhatten Project to build the next generation of tritium bombs. Thankfully the Cold War ended and Dr. Ludwig proceeded to work with the US Navy's acquisition community (NAVSEA, SPAWAR) engaging in strategic planning and process improvement. During his early career, Dr. Ludwig consulted with other government agencies, hospitals, industrials, and distribution on quality improvement initiatives. Tim's father was a preacher as well as a college professor and his mother was an elementary school teacher. So it's easy to understand why he wanted to be a teacher as well, and he has done so for over 25 years. One of his favorite activities is presenting keynotes where his teaching skills can deliver meaningful messages to educate and inspire. To this end, Dr. Ludwig has delivered over 100 keynote speeches internationally. In his "day job" Dr. Ludwig is a Distinguished Graduate Professor at Appalachian State University where he teaches in the nationally recognized Industrial/Organizational Psychology and Human Resources Management Masters program. Dr. Ludwig's teaching has been recognized with the North Carolina University Board of Governors' Excellence award and has been inducted into his University's Academy of Outstanding Teachers.
