    Maternal health in Canada - What are the data telling us? A look at mortality, morbidity, changing populations, system practices, and what we can learn from countries with stronger data systems. Canada has been witnessing a large increase in maternal mortality. It is the only high income country to see an increase in the last decades. Nine countries worldwide have seen an increase. Why is this happening here? What does this mean? Why is this important for the whole population? What is the system doing about it? This will be a series. This is an important matter that impacts all of us, old, young, women and men. There are graphs and words that show up on the screen for your viewing.     There is no reason for MMR to be increasing in the high income country of Canada. When I use the word midwife, I mean all clinicians. It improves rates of breastfeeding and length of breastfeeding, stabilizes vital signs and blood sugars for the newborn, lowers stress and pain (Lowers stress hormones and crying) and promotes deep emotional bonding and decreases risk of postpartum bleeding. There is so much evidence to have skin to skin with a baby that it is now considered unethical not to provide it.     As of May 2026, there has been more awareness about the increase of MMR. The SOGC has come out in June of 2026 saying that MMR has been increasing for 30 yrs. Why the silence for 30 yrs?
