Ep 49 - Brain Fog, Burnout & a Racing Mind: Can Neurotechnology Help?

Welcome to Building Your Best Brain, the podcast where we explore neuroscience-backed principles to help you build resilience, regulate stress, and show up as the fullest version of yourself. What if the technology used to study and train the brain wasn't just for researchers, specialized clinics, or elite performers? In this episode, I'm joined by my neurotechnology mentor, Dr. Jeff Tarrant, to explore how emerging brain technologies may help us better understand and work with our own brains. From brain fog and burnout to a mind that just won't slow down, we discuss how different brain states can show up in our everyday lives, how neurotechnology approaches them, and how to start exploring these tools without breaking the bank. We'll also unpack the difference between brain stimulation and brain training, explore technologies designed to influence brain activity, and discuss how to approach this rapidly evolving field with curiosity, discernment, and safety. In this episode, we cover: How Jeff discovered neurofeedback and integrated brain-based approaches into his psychology practice The difference between brain stimulation and brain training — and why understanding that distinction matters How brain fog and burnout can involve different patterns of brain activity, and why one approach may not fit everyone How neurotechnology approaches lower-arousal or underactive brain states, including technologies being investigated for their effects on cellular energy and mitochondrial function How different technologies aim to help regulate an overactive, racing mind The differences between neurofeedback, photobiomodulation, and audiovisual entrainment How to begin exploring neurotechnology safely and cost-effectively, even if you're new to the field What to consider before investing in a brain-training or brain-stimulation device Meet Dr. Jeff Tarrant Dr. Jeff Tarrant is a licensed psychologist, board-certified neurofeedback specialist, and researcher with over two decades of clinical and research experience studying the brain's capacity for change. He is the founder of the NeuroMeditation Institute and Chief Neuroscientist at 40 Years of Zen, where he applies advanced quantitative EEG and neurofeedback methods within an intensive brain-training program. Through his private coaching practice, Dr. Tarrant works one-on-one with high-performing clients seeking measurable improvements in focus, resilience, and longevity. He is the author of Becoming Psychic and Meditation Interventions to Rewire the Brain. He also played a key scientific role in The Telepathy Tapes podcast and is featured in its forthcoming documentary, as well as Superhuman 2. Want to Go Deeper? Neurotechnology Resources Mentioned Curious about the technologies discussed in this episode? Explore the following devices and their approaches to brain wellness. Photobiomodulation (PBM): Vielight — devices using light-based approaches that are being studied for their effects on biological processes, including brain function. Audiovisual entrainment (AVE): Narbis Illume — explore light-and-sound technology designed around brainwave entrainment. Stroboscopic light and audiovisual stimulation: NeuroVIZR — a light-and-sound device designed for brain and wellness experiences. These links are provided for exploration and educational purposes. Devices differ in their mechanisms, evidence, intended uses, and safety considerations; a product's claims should not be taken as proof of clinical effectiveness. Ep 48 - How to Actually Benefit from Spiritual Practices

Welcome to Building Your Best Brain, the podcast where we explore neuroscience-backed principles to help you build resilience, regulate stress, and show up as the fullest version of yourself. In this episode, I'm joined by my coach and meditation teacher, Jess Magnan, for a conversation about something I've personally incorporated into my life for years: spiritual practices. Yoga, meditation, intuition, energy work, and other spiritual tools can sometimes feel a little… woo woo. But what if you don't have to fully understand or believe in something for it to become a meaningful tool in your life? Jess and I talk about how to actually access these practices, what gets in the way of people benefiting from them, and what can happen when we move beyond simply learning spiritual concepts and start actually living them. In this episode, we cover: How Jess went from discovering yoga and meditation to building a career around spirituality, consciousness, and the subconscious mind Why spiritual practices can feel "woo woo" — and what might actually be getting in the way of people connecting with them The biggest blocks Jess sees in people when it comes to accessing spiritual tools and allowing them to create meaningful change How practices like yoga, meditation, somatic work, intuition, and energy work can become practical tools rather than just ideas Why knowing something intellectually isn't always enough to create change in the way we think, feel, and behave The surprising transformations Jess has witnessed when people begin to embody spiritual wisdom rather than simply understand it How we can start incorporating spiritual practices into our lives in a way that feels grounded, accessible, and genuinely useful Meet Jess Jess Magnan is a Spiritual Self-Image Coach who specializes in translating spiritual wisdom and universal laws into a language the subconscious mind can actually understand — and act upon. Her signature program, The Emotional Elevation Method, brings together subconscious reprogramming, Rapid Resolution Therapy (RRT), somatic work, intuition, meditation, energy work, yoga philosophy, and spiritual principles to help people shift the internal patterns that keep them from fully embodying who they know themselves to be. Jess has been teaching yoga and meditation for almost 15 years and is a certified Integral Coach, RRT-trained practitioner, Yoga Teacher and Yoga Teacher Trainer, and trained Intuitive. She has co-led multiple 200-hour yoga teacher trainings and spent years studying and teaching the intersection of consciousness, spirituality, the body, and the subconscious mind. At the heart of Jess's work is the belief that spiritual wisdom is only as powerful as our ability to live it. Her work focuses on installing that wisdom into the operating system of the subconscious mind, so the conscious and subconscious can work together in the name of the highest good, maximal joy, and soul growth. Ep 46 - How I Reprogrammed My Brain for my PhD Defence

Welcome to Building Your Best Brain, the podcast where we explore neuroscience-backed principles to help you build resilience, regulate stress, and show up as the fullest version of yourself. In this episode, I'm sharing a very personal story: how I reprogrammed my brain for my PhD defense and how the day ended up going better than I could have ever imagined. This episode is a behind-the-scenes look at what that process actually looked like. In this episode, we cover: How I unpacked the root cause of my exhaustion and stress in the weeks leading up to my PhD defense How I reprogrammed an intention for how I wanted to experience my defense — rather than trying to control exactly what would happen What happened when my "worst fear" actually came to life during my defense Why the outcome was still better than I could have imagined If you'd like to explore these concepts further, join me for my free Pick My Brain webinar series, where we dive deeper into the neuroscience and practical application of these concepts and answer your questions live. Ep 42 — Four Lessons That Made Finishing My PhD Surprisingly Enjoyable

Welcome to Building Your Best Brain, the podcast where we explore neuroscience-backed principles to help you build resilience, regulate stress, and show up as the fullest version of yourself. Today's episode is a timely story from my own life: the journey of writing and submitting my PhD thesis in neuroscience. While this episode may resonate with anyone currently working on a thesis or major project, it's really about something much bigger. It's about the limiting thoughts we tell ourselves, the scripts we inherit from our environment, the beliefs that keep us stuck, and what it actually takes to move through overwhelm without burning out. In this episode, I share four lessons that not only made writing my thesis possible, but surprisingly enjoyable. My invitation to you is simple: choose one lesson that resonates and experiment with applying the accompanying tool in your own life. Pay attention to what changes. Chances are, your brain will respond differently than you expect. I'd love to hear what stood out to you. Leave a comment, question, or curiosity below. Reflection and discussion are some of the most powerful ways to deepen learning and create lasting change.
