#133 - Action, Not Perfection: 6 Things Every Speaker Needs in 2026 with Marianne Hickman

This episode was supposed to reach you in January. It's reaching you now, and I'm not going to apologize for it, because waiting for the perfect moment is the exact thing I'm going to ask you to stop doing.2026 is the year of the horse — action, forward momentum, traction, awareness — and not one of those expires when the calendar turns. There are still months on this year with your name on them.I've spent this year letting myself fall all the way into my love affair with horses and all things equine, and here's what the round pen keeps teaching me: you cannot connect with your horse, your work, or your goals without doing the internal work. A car does exactly what you tell it. A horse has a mind of its own and can read what you're feeling before you can. It is the most honest mirror I have ever stood in front of. (If you want to see what that work does for a girl who's carrying something nobody can see, go look at what Bridle Up Hope is doing.)But this one is for the speakers. Here's what we get into:- Why action, not perfection, is the only version of a goal that ever gets reached- We cast a vote every single time we choose — this one caught me holding a leftover Halloween Twix on the phone with my health coach.- How I lost ninety minutes of a morning to one set of wet sheets, and what task-distraction is quietly costing you- Why trauma dumping from the stage sells pity instead of solutions, and what it looks like to become a vendor of hope instead- What McDonald's got wrong with AI and what Porsche got right, and the line I draw between a tool and an end product- Why I'd hand back every follower I have for the relationships I missed while four security guards walked me through a lobby- The sales course I built that literally nobody bought, and the one question that would have saved me the trouble- What your audience hears subconsciously when you actually spend time with them (your kids hear it too)- Why rewatching your own old videos is the worst and most necessary hour you'll spend this yearThere's a story in here about a young woman who found me three months after an event to tell me what had happened to the young man I called up on stage. The gravity of it has never left me. It's why I'm careful with my words; why I want you careful with yours; why the thank-you notes on your wall were never the point, only the milestones on the way to hearing well done.If a name came to mind while you were listening, send this to them — they've been praying for the permission you just got.You don't need a new year. You need a next step. Take action, get traction, and please, pick up the mic.Let me know what part stuck out to you in the comments below:Want the Podcast Database I talked about? #132 - How Do I Begin Networking without being Annoying? With Drew Kimball

The most connected man in the room is usually the one carrying the most. When I met Drew Kimball at a networking event, I couldn't put my finger on what was different about him — only that something was. He's the guy who knows everyone; twenty years in sales, number one in his region three years running, the kind of next-billionaire-next-door energy that somehow still feels completely accessible. He'll tell you networking isn't hunting, it's farming; that it's give to give; that it's better to be interested than interesting. Take notes, because that part alone is a masterclass. But that's not why I needed you to meet him.Five years ago, Drew buried his son on the coldest day of December. His boy was stillborn, and it was the hardest day of his life — and out of that grief, instead of disappearing into it, he started showing up for other people living the same nightmare. He says the thing most of us are too scared to say out loud: grief never really leaves, and the worst thing you can do is carry it in silence. He'll remind you that most of the people quietly drowning are men — so go check on the quiet one you just thought of.Drew shares the things I hadn't thought to ask; how a man keeps connecting when his own world is coming apart; what faith looks like when it's the only thing left to stand on; why the people who carried him weren't the ones with answers, but the ones who simply refused to let him be alone. This is a man who has built a whole life out of introducing people to each other — and somewhere in the worst of it, he learned that connection isn't a business skill. It's how we survive each other's hardest seasons. If a name came to mind while you were listening — and I know one did — send this to them. They prayed for exactly what you just heard. Because the man who taught a thousand people how to walk into a room learned the truth in the quietest one: nobody was ever meant to carry it alone.📘 Connect with Drew Kimball ➡️ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@drewkimball303800:00 Why I needed you to meet Drew01:58 The one gift he'd give you in an hour02:55 Business cards are dead: networking the right way07:41 How to actually fill a room13:37 Networking when you're an introvert18:41 Becoming a connector20:38 Hunting vs. farming: the art of the sale23:40 Closing without the ick: the upfront contract41:21 How Drew got into sales — and what actually matters44:55 The story he needed to tell: burying his son47:41 Check on the quiet ones50:30 Healing in community: retreats, brotherhood, and faith55:25 When a friendship dies: forgiveness and letting go01:04:14 Their top five books01:13:06 Parting words: help enough people get what they want01:17:10 Where to find DrewLet me know what part stuck out to you in the comments below:Want the Podcast Database I talked about? #134 - "How to stop People Pleasing" With Tanna Barker

Your worth is not something you earn. It's what you bring. We've all heard that before. And still we hang the degrees on the wall, chase the title, check the bank account, and wait for something outside of us to say we've finally made it.Tanna Barker spent most of her life doing exactly that, and I knew I needed you to meet her. She grew up the new girl over and over again, remaking herself in every neighborhood just to fit in; lying about where she lived; having friends drop her off in front of the big houses across the street so no one would know the truth. Tanna shares what it costs to build a life on what looks right instead of what feels right; the question that turned her marriage around (get this: what's the common denominator?); and the simple morning practice she built so her worth is never again up for a vote. She calls it being self-full, not selfish. And she doesn't hand you her framework; she shows you how to build your own, so nobody can take it away from you.Somewhere in this conversation I said out loud a thought I had never put into words: if I were worthy of it, I'd have it already. If that thought lives in you too, this episode is for you.Worth isn't a finish line you cross. It's what you carried in with you. #131 - How do I keep going when everything is screaming at me to give up? With Iron Cowboy, James Lawrence

There's a voice inside you whose whole job is to talk you out of the thing you were made to do.James Lawrence calls it the bully. On day five of running (get this) one hundred Ironmans back to back - with a stress fracture forming in his legthat voice offered him the worst exit possible: just get hit by a car - then you'd have a legitimate way out. He kept going anyway. And crossed the finish line. This is the Iron Cowboy — the man who did 50 Ironmans in 50 states in 50 days, then came back and doubled what the entire world swore was impossible. Documentaries have been made about him; records have been rewritten because of him; and it turns out he lives right down the road from me, which still makes me laugh. But I didn't bring James on to marvel at the miles. I brought him on because you and I both know the resistance is coming — as a parent, as an entrepreneur, as someone quietly carrying more than anyone can see — and I wanted you to hear from a man who has stood in the worst of it and learned what's actually waiting on the other side.James shares the things I hadn't thought to ask; why rock bottom turned out to be a gift and not a sentence; how the people in his corner carried him when his own legs wouldn't; what it does to a soul to gather a community in a parking lot coming out of the loneliest season most of us have ever lived through.James is living proof that a willingness to suffer on purpose can hand someone else the courage to face whatever they're facing. #130 - How (and why) you should never give up with Jordan Stevenson

Imagine taking a bullet to the head, and living to tell the tale. When I first met, Jordan Stevenson, it was through a mutual friend (actually it was Glenn Lovelace, another guest from the show). Jordan had just had an accident while snowboarding and Glenn called us in to see if we could help out around the house. When I shook Jordans hand, my jaw hit the floor. Remember, Jordan had already taken a bullet to the head. Now he was nursing a cracked rib from a snowboarding crash. When I looked down, I saw that Jordan also was missing one of his legs. While on deployment, Jordan took an AK-47 round through his helmet, through his head, and out the back.I knew the moment I met Jordan that you needed to meet him too. He possesses an unconquerable spirit walking around in a body that had every reason to quit a long time ago.In this conversation, Jordan walks us through all of it. The sandlot-style childhood where he and the neighborhood boys played a game they just called War. The patriotism that pulled him into the Navy after 9/11. Three runs at SEAL training and three brutal interruptions — pneumonia, a ruptured appendix, a knee that finally said no. The pivot into EOD. The night on the wall in Afghanistan, and the round that should have ended him. And the medic, who was told to pack the wound and call Jordan a loss — and refused. "I'm not going to lose Jordan. I'm going to save Jordan's life."That is the through-line of this whole episode. Brotherhood. The kind that's forged in dirt and fire; the kind that doesn't dissolve when the uniforms come off; the kind we all need and most of us don't know how to build.Jordan didn't want to talk about any of this for a long time. The book was scary to write. Being seen was scarier. Eventually, he started speaking. He started writing. He started looking for every brother he could find — every man and every woman quietly deciding they're done — so they could see what often, we never get to see: that the barrier in front of you is the final step before the greatest thing you've ever done.If someone's name just came to your heart while you were reading this, send this episode to them. They might be praying for exactly the kind of brotherhood Jordan is about to describe. And if YOU don't have a band of brothers of your own — Jordan said it on the mic, and I'll say it again right here — message him. He will be it.Through this episode you will not only come to know Jordan Stevenson. #128 - How do I cope with Grief and Loss with Grace? With Amanda Wilkinson

No one wants to become an expert on Grief.there's a kind of grief that rewrites you, and there's a kind of grace that meets you there.Amanda Wilkinson knows both.Amanda is the mother of Grace Wilkinson — Gracelyn — who, after an accident at school took six years of her life and eventually ended it, taught her family (and now the world) what it means to walk through the brutal and the beautiful at the same time.I met Amanda through her brother Ben Kjar (you might remember him from his episode on his film Standout), and the moment he introduced us, I knew I needed you to met her. She's brilliant; she's vulnerable; she's been put through what she calls an unsolicited PhD program in grief. And the gold she's carrying out of that experience is something we all need.Fair warning: we cried the whole way through this one. There wasn't a dry eye on set, and I don't expect there to be one for you either. Bring tissues.Amanda's book about Grace is on Amazon now, and I'll tell you straight — it's the kind of read that rearranges you. I finished it the day before we recorded, walked out into the living room, looked at my kids, and asked myself questions I hadn't thought to ask. Prayed prayers I didn't know I needed to pray.If a name came to mind while you were listening — a mother, a daughter, someone walking through loss, someone who needs to remember that goodness is still ahead — please send this to them.Grace is beloved. Grace matters. And the way you walk with grace through your own story is your legacy.Through this book you will not only come to know Grace Wilkinson, you will come to understand the Grace of God.📘 Connect with Amanda Wilkinson ➡️ Buy the Book: https://amzn.to/4no9ZP6 ➡️ More on Gracelyn Wilkinson: https://amandawilkinsonspeaks.com/gracelyn-wilkinson ➡️ Book Amanda to Speak: https://amandawilkinsonspeaks.com/speaking ➡️ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/amanda.k.wilkinson.3 ➡️ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/amandakjarwilkinson/00:00 Before we begin: a heads-up03:05 Meeting Amanda (and how Ben Kerr brought her to the show)04:10 An unsolicited PhD program in grief06:07 The conversations most parents never get to have09:14 When the doctors said we'd come to the end16:25 The list Grace made19:05 Recording an album from a hospital bed24:46 "Mom, when I move to heaven, can you still pray for me?"26:23 Angels, gather round: how Amanda prays now29:58 Hope is a relationship, not an outcome36:45 Transactional vs. transformational faith40:21 Why Grace gave away her flowers47:27 Becoming a death doula for her own daughter50:19 What Grace wants you to know54:18 An invitation to read her storyLet me know what part stuck out to you in the comments below:Want the Podcast Database I talked about? #127 - How to bridge the disagreement gap without losing the relationship with Tasha Wheelhouse

Here's what I want you to hear: we've forgotten how to disagree respectfully. We've been told for so long, "Don't talk about politics. Don't talk about religion." And now? We don't know how. We don't know how to sit across from someone we love, hear something we don't agree with, and stay in the room. That's exactly why I brought Tasha Wheelhouse on the show.Tasha was the award-winning speaker at our last Speak-Off, and she'll be the first to tell you she wasn't even planning to get on stage. She just went up to have fun. (Spoiler: that's the secret every speaker is missing. Listen for that part around the 5-minute mark.)Tasha and I don't see eye to eye on everything. And in this conversation, we go there. Religion. Politics. Sexuality. Cancel culture. The stuff we're all told to keep quiet about. But we model what it looks like to actually have the conversation with kindness, with curiosity (hint - that's the secret), and without anyone walking away wounded.Tasha is one of the most thoughtful humans I know. She's a phenomenal editor (I hire her for almost everything I need professionally polished), she runs a YouTube channel called Copper Shock where she breaks down horror films through a storytelling lens, and she has this rare gift of making people feel welcomed without ever compromising who she is.If someone's name came to mind while you were watching this, send it to them. #126 - How to Survive Bullying & Find Happiness with Jordan & Anneli Fielding

Not every one deals with something as life changing as a physical disability, but you know what everyone deals with on a daily basis? One word: kindness. Maybe you have a lot of experience with the kindness of other - maybe you don't have enough. Jordan and Anneli Fielding are tow people who know what it's like to raise their kids while fending off unkindness, while at the same time dishing out love. As parents of their amazing son, Colton (who was born with Crouzon Syndrome and plays young Ben in the film "Standout" a movie about the life experience of Ben Kjar) the Fieldings know what it's like to be seen differently almost daily, and they leverage it for good. Together with Marianne they discuss what is was like learning early that Colton was born with fused skull sutures, the emotional toll of early uncertainty, and navigating support groups and life changing medical decisions. The Fieldings describe how faith helped them relinquish control while still doing their part. They share experiences with bullying and curiosity at school, strategies like educating classmates, and differing approaches to confrontation. They credit Ben, the movie, and a strong “band of brothers” support network for building Colton’s confidence, and encourage viewers to see or stream Standout for its broader message of kindness and resilience.Go see the movie: https://standoutfilm.com/00:00 Welcome and Guests00:48 Parenting Worries01:51 Why This Episode02:51 Questions From Family04:30 Lessons From Hard Things06:23 Crouzon Diagnosis10:24 Early Emotions and Support11:09 Surgeries and Uncertainty15:13 Letting Go of Control15:49 Insurance and Canceled Surgery23:42 LeFort Surgery Scare26:58 Firefighter Dad Perspective29:33 Band of Brothers32:03 School and Bullying35:58 Teaching Kids Compassion37:25 Standing Up at Soccer41:40 Kindness Versus Confrontation44:14 Curiosity Builds Bridges48:12 Finding Hope in Ben50:54 Protecting Colton on Set54:32 How Ben Found Colton01:02:02 Kindness Over Awareness01:05:53 Bully Proof Confidence01:08:02 Support System Matters01:10:22 Final Movie Takeaways📘 See the Movie - Standout ➡️ Website: https://standoutfilm.com/Do you want a part two of this episode?
