We’re diving into the chaotic, gothic architecture of Tim Burton’s Gotham to argue whether Michael Keaton’s stiff-necked Batsuit is actually cool or just a massive nightmare (literally!), and we’re split on whether Jack Nicholson’s Joker is a legitimate menace or just a manic art major. We question Michael Gough’s overly fatherly Alfred and him making some highly questionable security decisions regarding the Batcave. We can’t skip over the dirty trick one studio pulled on Robin Williams to get Nicholson cast, and Prince’s legendary soundtrack.     We're swinging back into the Raimi-verse to tackle what might just be the pinnacle of superhero cinema—or at least the one with the most aggressive amount of unprovoked screaming. Spider-Man 2 is on the docket for our Vigilantes and VHS summer series, and we are breaking down everything from Doc Ock's surprisingly sentient (and meticulously named) robot arms to Peter Parker's unnecessary dedication to channeling his inner Clark Kent dork mask even when he's already hiding behind an actual mask. We marvel at the incredible practical effects, throw shade on the wooden CGI, question the physics of swinging from mid-air cranes, and call out Aunt May for casually swindling neighborhood kids. It's a miracle Harry Osborn has time to run a multinational corporation in between his cartoonish temper tantrums, but we still love every chaotic minute of this 2004 masterpiece. Don't get us wrong, the practical effects hold up surprisingly well for the era, and Christopher Reeve is absolutely iconic with his masterclass in playing Clark Kent and the Man of Steel as two entirely different people. But did we really need four minutes of opening text flying at the screen, followed by a 48-minute origin story before he even puts on the suit? We're breaking down the absolute campiness of Gene Hackman's Lex Luthor and his bizarrely low-stakes plan to blow up the California coast just to score some premium real estate. We also dive into the behind-the-scenes chaos, like Marlon Brando getting paid $3.7 million while he refused to memorize lines and read them off a baby's diaper instead.     We loaded up the 2004 release of The Punisher, starring Thomas Jane and John Travolta, to see if it hits the target today. Turns out, the rewatch was as grizzled as the Punisher himself. While the practical effects hold up surprisingly well and the soundtrack is a great early-2000s time capsule of Seether and Drowning Pool, the movie itself struggles with a massive identity crisis and a cliché score. We dive into the glaring plot holes—like Frank completely missing a bullet scar after getting shot point-blank in the chest—and discuss how his family's terrible hiding strategy sealed their fate. From the heavy-handed cheese and campy comic-book-style apartment neighbors to John Travolta chewing the scenery like he's still in Face/Off, we break down everything that felt off. Wesley Snipes absolutely owned this role, basically retconing the Marvel comics character to match his version. But does the movie actually hold up? We try our best to look past some truly abysmal late-90s CGI blood to see if the action still kicks. Along the way, we question why Deacon Frost is such a boring villain with a terrible master plan, marvel at the bizarre practical effects used to bring Pearl the vampire to life, why they would pick CGI blood over something practical and recount how Donal Logue literally dislocated his jaw while carrying this movie's comedic relief.     Constantine (2005) | Episode 124-This Podcast Takes Tokens(Vigilantes & VHS Summer 4 of 10)

    After the Hellboy episode, we grabbed the Spear of Destiny and took a trip to LA to discuss Keanu Reeves in Constantine. Even though critics weren't huge fans (landing a 46% on the Tomatometer), audiences disagreed with a huge 72%, and honestly, we're right there with the fans. We break down how this movie handles Christian mythology to build a surprisingly rich, lived-in world. Sure, it deviates entirely from the Hellblazer comics—swapping a blonde British guy for a dark-haired Keanu in LA—but the Matrix-style aesthetic and buttery cinematography completely won us over. We do have to dock some points for the mid-2000s CGI that looks a bit like it was drawn with crayons, especially those rubbery demons, but the practical elements make up for it. From Tilda Swinton's brilliant turn as the grifting angel Gabriel to Peter Stormare chewing the scenery as Satan himself, the character casting is top-tier. Plus, Shia LaBeouf’s brief but memorable run as Chaz, we explore Nic Cage's canceled stint as the lead, and look ahead to the confirmed sequel Love quoting old movies? We had to go back and figure out why everyone slept on this one so hard at the box office, despite Ron Perlman delivering a practically perfect performance as the big red, cigar-chompin' demon. We talk about the wild alternate casting choices the studio pushed for (yes, they seriously wanted Vin Diesel) and how del Toro held his ground. We also tackle the uncanny valley of 2004-era CGI that we are mostly forgiving , while praising del Toro's absolute masterclass in practical effects and color palettes.
